New(ish) owner :)

Hi there, iv used the site a few times. It haven't actually introduced myself.

I got my boxster about 1 and a half months ago, after deciding that my modified Subaru impreza was just too loud and thirsty I decided on a Porsche after my dad let me drive his 996 Carrara Chrono and I fell in love with the handling.

I'm 21 years old and I'm a gas technician in the eastbourne area.

My car Is a Yellow year 2000 Boxster 2.7 tiptronic with a full PSE, brand new roof, front and rear resprayed (by Porsche), tracker, new brakes all round and iv just fitted new P-Zeros as the previous guy was using budgets!!! (idiot)

So yer, Hi!

New to Porsche

Hi,

Just thought I'd put something in here to introduce myself to the world of BoXa.net!

I've recently bought a standard 2001 (Y) 2.7 Porsche Boxster.

I've been forced into sorting a few bits out on it since buying, which has taken the shine off the experience of buying my first Porsche, but the car is still incredible and I am pleased with it over all.

I tend to use these forums to assist in diagnosing any issues I come across and I also like to have a nosey at other peoples cars on here too. What can I say, I just love Porsches!!

Cheers

Noisy rear end.........

Hi Guys,

I'm after a little help trying to diagnose a small issue......

When driving the car on normal roads there seems to be a 'knocking' coming from the rear suspension.

I have had the rear roll bushes replaced, they were a little worn and I thought this would be the issue, but the noise is still there. It isn't evident when going over speed bumps or larger humps in the road.

The noise sounds like there is something could be loose somewhere and is only heard when going along roads where the car 'shakes' a little bit. i.e cobbles or similar.

My local independent garage can start to diagnose the problem, but will need to keep the car in and start taking the rear end apart to do it.

I was hoping this may sound familiar to someone on here who can give me an idea as what to look for.

The car is a 2001 (Y) Boxster 2.7 with 107K on the clock.

Thanks

Took the car into them on Friday with a horrific squeal coming from the engine. They diagnosed it on the spot as the Oil Separator but said they were very busy and would try to fit it in. Saturday lunchtime got a surprise call to say the car was ready! Great service guys!

Yah - MoT pass

Suddenly realised we needed a MoT (moths in the wallet get cardiac arrests), so got it booked in a local garage for first thing this morning and a Pass with no advisories

Slightly surprised that he'd initally issued a fail due to wipers blurring windscreen, but said when he'd given the screen a good wash everything was fine.

As there'd been light drizzle on way there I know blurring wasn't bad - probably just after effects of the car shampoo - and realise blurring could be a fail . But in that scenario is it normal to issue a fail cert, then issue a pass once he's washed the screen, rather than just try washing the screen and just issue a pass. Just curious - something to do with tightened regs?.

Drizzle had stopped when I left, so hood down for a naughty quick blast as I played hookey from working for 30 mins - set me up for the day!!

I know its coming to summer (hopefully it will come), but I was wondering the best place to buy a hardtop for the 987 boxster S. I find it rather hard to come accross them being sold. Also what would be a good price to pay. Any replies would be appreciated.

Had a chance to take OPC Cardiff's 981S for a 24 hr test drive, For anyone that has one on order and is due for delivery soon all I can say is you lucky *!*&^% My thoughts were that it was absolutely fantastic, truly a great car. It sounded lovely much raspier than my 987S and once it hit 5k rpm was howling.

The car I had had the PDK and PSAM. When I saw the images originally I wasn't sure it was that much different to the previous model just subtle changes here and there but in the flesh it looks totally different, in fact I think it looks beautiful.

In short I was completely won over by this car, there aren't many other cars that I'd take over mine as it does everything so well but this is a definite future car for me, just waiting till they hit the used market and theres a deal to be had

engine goes bang

Following an engine noise the 2.7L motor in MY01 has 'let go' - OPC Wilmslow diagnose timing chain on bank 1...

I've done the usual searching about to find reconditioners, replacements etc. After much research I have an engine rebuilder locally who will do the work at reasonable hourly rates, however the unknown is parts required and their cost.

I imagine full retail prices for spares from OPC my render the vehicle 'beyond economical repair' - my question is: can i source 'after market' engine components for MY01 Box which don't attract the usual premium coz it's a Porsche?

If so, from where?

Please advise as i'll need to make a decision soon whether to break or fix.

Horrible whirring noise

OK guy's heres a question for you.

My 150,000mile 986s has developed a loud whirring noise it starts as the engine warms up and gets louder. It sounds like a dry bearing to me. I've removed the ancillaries belt and that makes no difference so its deffo engine related. There is no lack of power and no lights or overheating etc. It started off quite quietly but has increased in volume over about twenty miles to the point where I don't want to restart the engine
I would have been a happy bunny if taking the belt off had revealed a faulty water pump etc but unfortunately it's a much bigger job.
Question is, what do we think it can be? Having read about IMS bearing failure the accounts indicate little or no warning prior to catastrophic failure, so if it's not that (still may be) what else could it be?

Any suggestions ????

Refinement

I have a 2.7 987 & find it's level of power to be perfectly appropriate for my driving which thesedays is a 70 mile round trip on 95% motorway 3 times a week.

Is a 997s cab or 997s coupe more refined on the motorway than the 987? Even with the roof closed the wind & tire roar are sometimes fatiguing. Not majorly but enough for me to be thinking about something a little quieter. I would only consider a 997s, XKR, Vantage, R8 or at an absolute push a new SLK 55 as I want something that sounds nice at wide open throttle.

Any comparisons or experiences of these to share?
