Got a quote from tescos last week £421 for the year, went back on to pay for it today, and got a message to call them so I did.

They have changed underwriters to Zurich I think, and my quote is now in excess of £1300!!

Back onto the little robot site and ended up at £415 including key insurance upto £1500

What a difference a week makes at tesco eh

(And before you flame, I was with Aplan but their price was £65 more)

Did you go back and see if A-Plan could improve? They found insurers that would price match my on line quotes. No connection BTW.

I find it amazing that nowadays you have to play one insurance company off against another to get a half decent price. Why they can't give you a competitive quite to start with I don't know - it hardly inspires customer loyalty if they manage to reduce their price substantially upon production of a competitors quote. Makes me feel like if I hadn't challenged then I would have been ripped off!

Sadly its way of the world. Insurance, car breakdown, phones, TV viewing packages, utilities etc. will charge you what they think you'll pay and will either reduce their price if you threaten to walk or you will reduce your outlay if you do walk.

Like Wulfy I'd like the best possible price first not after a haggle but that doesn't happen.

Totally agree with everyone else. After my accident last year my insurance with Admiral went from £1,400 and at renewal the quote went to £2,800. I just told them there is absolutely no way in hell I would pay that kind of money and without even a fuss they said OK, £1,700. It boggles my brain I tell you.

It seems totally random, but I then it's been that way since I first sat in my Austin Metro. I had to switch away from A-Plan this year as they couldn't compete as I couldn't really understand with 11 years NCB but I guess everyone has budgets to hit.

Just insured a 57 plate 1.4 Micra. For some reason, if we started the insurance the same day £800, if we started it the next day £600.

Before anyone says, its because my 18 year old daughter on a provisional is insured on it too.

I've certainly had similar experiences when insuring my motorcycles, and I've changed insurers with my Boxster for the same reason, but I am at an age where most insurance firms are reluctant to take me on, so room for manoeuvre is rapidly diminishing.

I've just had my 08 plate boxster insured for £350.....cheaper than my shogun sport for the year.....I'm not complaining....I also asked admiral for the multi car quote and I've reduced my shogun insurance for when the renewal is due....all in all I'm very pleased!

A-plan lost my custom yesterday.

Renewal £390 (£50 more than last year)

Direct line £224 must be their turn to buy customers as two years ago More Thananyoneelse were and this year kept up to scratch with a £1400 quote!

I wonder if this is somehow a reaction to price comparison sites. If we relied on them, 3/4 of insurers would lose business. So they flummox them and reduce the customers' reliance on them.
