Common Boxster Faults and fixes

Recommended Posts

WORK IN PROGRESS

Feel free to list the perceived common faults and fixes, feel free to link to a relevant how to or thread and I'll pull it together as time goes by. I'm quite happy to link outwith BoXa.net (I'll link to the Pelican site for instance)

I'll kick off with

1. IMS - http://www.BoXa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=61328

2. RMS and other common flat 6 issues - http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/13-ENGINE-Common_Engine_Failures/13-ENGINE-Common_Engine_Failures.htm

3. AOS - https://sites.google.com/site/mikefocke2/airoilseparatorreplacement

4. Condensors - http://www.BoXa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=59949

5. Spark plug coils/tubes and plugs - http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Change_Spark_Plugs_%26_Tubes.html

6. Steering pipe cracks - http://www.BoXa.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=53614&hl=%2Bsteering+%2Bpipe

7. Soft top mechanism - http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/71-BODY-Convertible_Top_Repair/71-BODY-Convertible_Top_Repair.htm

11 Headlight switch - http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/996-turbo-gt2/176814-diy-head-light-switch-remove-replace.html

12 Ignition barrel - http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Replace_Ignition_Switch.html

13 Door membrane

14 Rear boot cable fraying

15 Corroding brake pipes (you know where)

16 Window regulators

17 Cracked header tank - http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/33-WATER-Coolant_Tank/33-WATER-Coolant_Tank.htm

18 Knocking and/or squeaking suspension

19 Condensers and leaves - http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/diy-submission-forum/697906-987-front-bumper-removal.html

20 Door lock issues. i.e. Microswitch problems

21 Front engine mount - http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Install_Front_Engine_Mount.html

22 Smoke on cold start-up - they all do that! It's just part of the flat 6 design, unless it resembles a WW2 destroyer - relax (and if it does refer to item 3 above)

This is absolutely brilliant for (I'm becoming) a neurotic about Boxster ownership.

Cheers

Trying to soak up as much info as I can before getting my car. Many thanks for the list!

Might be worth a quick update on this really useful thread.

Adding the model number in brackets after each item would help, and there are a few common issues for the 981 now too, off the top of my head;

- Roof wear/creasing

- Brake pedal microswitch

- internal fan sticking

Likely more!

Adding in one more if thats ok ?

- Starter Motor squeal/screech (apparently caused by clutch dust/debris finding its way into the starter motor)

If I had researched before buying 4 weeks ago I would have bought an MX5 instead:( My Jag and my Jeep are a breeze compared to this 986
