New Cayman 718 S PDK

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I managed to bag a new Cayman 718 S PDK in November. Went for lava orange and high gloss black wheels. I am regretting not getting PDLS as I noticed pretty much straight away that the lights were quite dim compared to my now sold BMW Z4 35iS which is why I have ventured onto this forum.

Is it true that the base headlamps have a new 25 w bi-xenon bulb (Philips DLS) which makes them 'legal' without the washer and self-levelling?? When I initially looked up the dipped beam bulb spec two websites suggested the bulbs would be D3S but now I think these are only for PDLS models (non-LED of course). Also I have learned that the front bumper assembly needs removing to pop out the headlamps!!? A little hacked off as I have to D3S bulbs sitting in my glove box....

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Cheers JC

Great looking car and welcome to the forum.

I can't believe that the lights are any lower power than the non-PDLS's on the 981, in which case, apart from pub bragging rights, they should be fine.

LOL :D

No I wish. It is a large 'barn' where my detailer stores cars for various folk much wealthier than me. Some lovely classics there.

Specs wise I went for sports chrono, PASM, PSE, Porsche Connect with nav (wish I had gone for connect plus though), Bose system. Must admit I'm a little sad if I cannot upgrade the bulbs but hey ho, didn't by a Cayman for the headlamps.

Cheers JC:D

That's the way to look at it. After all you're likely to have most of your fun while the suns shining.

Great looking car!

The lower power 25w do away with the need fo washers and self levelling. Upgrade to 35w, it comes with washers and levellers. There was a thread on here a while back, maybe worth a search.

There's a thread on here about changing to 35w units (in a 981), you have to change the ballasts as well.

i can't believe the bumper must be removed, surely it's just the same as in the 981, there being a special tool in the tool kit for removing the headlight unit.

Lovely car :) If it makes you feel any better I wasn't overly impressed with the PDSL on my loan 718. They didn't really seem any brighter just whiter. Only reason they worked better was because of the high beam assist

Confirmation the 718 does need the bumper to come off for headlight removal and bulb replacement!

Bit of a backward step!

That's bonkers, not only does the bumper need removing but you also have to recode on PIWIS.

I wonder if they have had issues with headlights dropping out /breaking or similar with 981 - it's not an issue I have heard of if so.

That is a fantastic looking car! I'm sure @Menoporsche will be along shortly to agree for obvious reasons ?

Meaning? :) Looking forward to finding out why.

Apologies, don't what PIWIS is but this is all beginning to sound complicated. I was told that the bumper removal for enabling headlamp unit removal was to reduce the chances of theft.....

I'm hoping that in the future the DLS bulbs will become available with whiter colour temperatures. Incidentally I'm pretty sure both D3S and DLS bulbs have integrated ballasts.

PIWIS is the Porsche diagnostics and programming computer software.

Did the salesman tell you that? They do come out with some bullshyate. I have never heard of the headlamps being stolen on a 986, 987 or 981. It would be easier to nick the whole car.

Spot on. They knew less than I did about the bulb specifications which didn't exactly create a great deal of faith. It took them 3 phone calls to find out that the bumper needed removing and the icing on the cake was that their third call was to a non-franchise Porsche specialist.....

Crazy!  So that is Porsche saying to the majority of owners we must do this for you at cost.  The old approach since day 1 of 986 2.5 worked a treat!

Must admit, once I saw the lighting rig I though it might be a detailer......or just a bloody good way to get the showroom experience every day! :)

Did someone say orange? :)

mine has close to same colour scheme (different shade of orange) modeled on 997 GT3RS). On phone now, will link a pic later.

You are right about lights and wattage but @T24RES has upgraded his recently so can give you tips.

As @nick_usa said to me; welcome to the pumpkin patch :)
