718 detuned for Chinese market?

Recommended Posts

Hadn't heard of this before.  According to this page, the 718 was sold with a lower power engine, 50bhp less, "for Chinese market".

Wonder if that was to satisfy some government criteria?

Just checked - of a few "western media" articles, this looks as convincing as any.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/porsche-plans-less-powerful-718-boxster-cayman-for-china/

"Porsche is making this move to cut the cars’ prices. The 250-hp models will sell for less than 600,000 renminbi (about $90,000). This is a “magical threshold for customers in China, Jan Roth, head of the 718 model line, told Automotive News Europe. "  Says several VW Group cars do the same.

$90,000 for a detuned car, ouch!

I wonder how much money they actually save by detuning it though?  Given it's a turbo I'd have thought it would just be a remap.  Looks like there's still a pretty healthy margin on it!

Looks like plenty of margin in their cars

The company’s operating profit grew by around 4% compared with the same period in the previous year, reaching €4.3 billion, and sales revenue increased by 10% to €25.8 billion.

+1. Might be a way of price cutting to boost sales , but ensuring others don’t buy cheap Boxsters from China then flip them.

The rumor has always been that Porsche developed the 2 liter 4 pot turbo for the Chinese market as they have much stricter criteria and Porsche wanted to target that massive market (much like the other luxury brands had). You have to remember that the strategy will have been signed off during the 981 life cycle ie when China was THE market to crack. The counter was that they had to do it anyway to meet emissions in the EU but of course that has now been disproved with the recent introduction of the 6 cylinder back into the boxster production line ie gives more credence that Porsche had targeted the boxster at China which required a 2 litre engine as a major influencer in the 4 pot FI solution.

Porsche come under the VAG group and at present are set for a 1.4 billion euro fine for not meeting the co average of 95 set for 2021. This is an average across the group. Yes they have introduced the 6 cyclinder again but expect to sell approx 500-1000 compared to the 4t  4,000 sold across europe its a very small percentage . The downside is the 15kg cat fitted to the car to get the emmsions down to 180 .Reducing emmsions helps build bespoke limited models, look what Aston Martin did?

Ah the environmentally friendly Cygnet?

According to this board many of the owners could lose 15kg anyway.

Eddie Irvine has an Aston Cygnet and says it's awesome. For a city car he says it does everything he could ever want it to.
