Non Porsche seats

Recommended Posts

Long story short, my boxster has become my daily and with a bad back i just don't find the seats very comfortable.

I know i could go for 987 seats but does anyone know how fitment is for alternative seats in a 986? Might be a stupid question but coming from mx5's you always lost headroom or legroom and the majority just physically didn't fit... Just trying to figure if the boxster has similar issues or if its just a case of finding the right mounts.

I really like the look of the seats from the corsa vxr and the renaultsport recaros and would love to know if anyone has tried anything like this...

If anyone has fitted alternative seats please post some pictures as it would be great to see them.

Not sure how literal to take you, but surely you don't want the look of, you want the adjustability of.

I fitted Corbeau buckets in my kit car 30 years ago.  On the halfords shelf they looked awesome, far better than the crappy Mk1 Escort L seats they replaced, but following 10 days driving Sussex - Lake District - Leeds - Sussex I had back problems for months. It was only when I dug out the staples into the wooden frames and put two huge wodges of foam in the lumbar locations that they became useable again.

Good luck.  Are you aware of the console delete option?

Worryingly i do quite like the look of them too...

I'm not sure its the adjustability thats the problem for me or if its how i fit them but i really struggle to find a comfortable position and it doesnt stay comfortable for long.

Yea, love the look of the console delete but i use the 2 cubbies all the time and leg room isnt a problem for me so i haven't done it.

You can fit aftermarket seats with the appropriate brackets and mounts. Most go for buckets as an 'upgrade'.

I found the standard seats terrible on my lower back. I fitted a set of the Gt3 style seats and they are fantastic, super comfortable and supportive.

I have owned, 986's, 981's, 997's, 993's (not helped by the offset pedals) and a 991...none have had seats that didn't induce back pain (in my case lower back) so you may not get the improvement that you seek by swapping to another standard Porsche seat (my first Porsche, a 944 Turbo was I recall OK..but it was a long time ago and I may be wrong!). I have a removable lumber cushion in my 986 - not convinced that it helps much as after an hour I start to suffer but you may have better luck.

Here's an idea.  Why not get a cushion and drive with it in various positions?  See if you can work out exactly which part of the seat is causing the problem?  Then you could hunt for a seat with better support in that area.

My problem was always lumbar, but as I drove my 987.1 from Frankfurt to Lisbon in 3 days with no back problems, that seems fine to me.

Huytonman makes a point in that the cars are designed as LHD (as mine is) but you guys have to put up with the RHD conversions, and they aren't always perfect.

Other thing is to ensure you've really played with all the adjustability settings. If you are desperate, isn't the 987 steering wheel more adjustable than the 986? I think reach as well as rake?

Thanks for all the replies.

Have ordered a replacement seat band for the base and will then try the cushion idea to see if i can figure out where the issue is once i have a decent base to start from...mine is lower back too so hopefully isn't the offset pedals.

Looks like the seats from the vxr corsa are Recaro Sportster CS (used across a few cars by the looks of it) and can just about fit, i would have to either buy BBI mounts or make some but doesnt look like the end of the world...can get heated ones too so that would be a bonus.  https://rennlist.com/forums/987-981-forum/997014-porsche-987-2-boxster-recaro-sportster-cs-seat-install.html
