3.4 into 2.5 986

Recommended Posts

Has anyone carried out a 3.4 996 engine conversion into a 2.5 986 at all?

I believe this is the most straightforward 911 engine swap into the 986, but what exactly is required from the 996?

Obviously complete engine. What would be required wiring/electrics wise? Which gearbox would be best to use?

Didn’t Marseille do this?

2.5 has better ratios, not sure if the power is too much.

Quite a few examples of this engine going into a 986 albeit the greatest numbers will be found on the US forums.

That said as quoted here:

There is a whole thread on this car:

One of my favourite forum cars - wonder what @marseille is driving these days?

General consensus is that the 2.5 gearbox is a sturdy unit.

ECUs are the biggest challenge and you'll need to research those - there were a couple of ECU hardware iterations over the life span of the pre-facelift Boxsters.

If you get started on the project there's a real appetite for build threads with lots of photos of the work.

Some contemporary Audis with V6 twin-turbo engines (that chuck out significantly more torque), use gearboxes from the same family - they are quite robust units.

What is the source of your curiosity @strada84 ?
