  1. I used to have a 986 and owned it for nearly 3 years years or so.

Our first Boxster. Lapis Blue 2002 model.

It was a great car but things just kept going wrong. It had been very well looked after before my time and as an ex car mechanic I know my way round a car and this looked a gem but during my time of ownership it had (from memory) a clutch. indicator stalks, both door membranes, disc and pads all round, coffin arms and tuning forks all round, all 6 coil packs, a battery, the exhaust and it needed tyres in Italy (not the cars fault) when the new Michelins went out of round.

In the direct opposite to anyone else I just got fed up of working on it and swapped it in for a Yellow 987.

There are fond memories of my 986 as we went to Italy twice, all round Germany and to Barcelona in it but I can't say I miss it or the many hours spent working on it.

Since then I went through the 987 to a 981 and now on my second 718S.

  2. I have just returned back form the OPC with mine. New Water Pump, COV and some other bits. I am now just under Β£2000 lighter.

The water pump is vacuum operated. The vacuum isolates the impellers of the pump so the water doesn't circulate and the engiine warms up quicker which helps lower emissions. The belt still drives the impeller but no water is getting to or from it until the engine temp is high enough for the barrier around the impeller to lower and the water circulates.

The seal on the vacuum from the water pump fails and coolant goes down the vacuum pipe to the COV causing the COV to fail and signals to the ECU that the engine is overheating.

From what the OPC said the water pump is not isolated when the COV fails but the ECU makes the car do this to show the driver there is a fault. Typical German efficiency. The water pump is operating but the car is saying it is not.

I am not brave enough to trial it and carry on driving when overheating warnings are flashing left, right and centre.

They also said that this failure has only been seen on the 2.5 S engine. Not on the 2.0 or the 2.5 GTS.

Same thing just happened to me. Warning on dash to stop immediately as overheating. Currently sitting at the side of the road waiting for it to cool down. 9 miles from home. This is going to be some journey.Β

The OPC told me the car doesn't actually overheat just the sensor goes in to one as the COV stops working correctly.

Hopefully yours is sorted soon. Mine is still at Porsche. Been a week now.

Once it cools down a little the COV will reset and you should be fine for the rest of the journey.
