I've just done a quick check on my 2003 3.2S...
Interesting that different council have different parameters it seems...
Being based in bradford we have a clean air zone but it's currently just for commercial vehicles.
So how is my car compliant for the big smoke but not other smaller cities? Different rules?

Did you have to modify or cut the panel or is sized perfect to replace the cigarette lighter ?
The hole is just ever so slightly too small so I just rubbed it down a little so it was a tight fit, didn't need the securing ring at the back.

I tried them separately and both work, I didn't think to try both at once, I'll do that and report back

fitted a pure highway 400 so my CDR-22 is now a DAB radio and replaced the lighter for a double usb socket with power button.
No idea where to position the wireless DAB receiver yet though

Any recommendations in the Bristol area?
I'd highly recommend Cotswold Porsche Specialists, about an hours drive from you, depending where you are in Bristol.
Forum sponsor, I've used them for 7 years, can't fault them.

If you don't want to travel phone and speak to Lee first, if the DFI engine has any common problems he should know about it.

Good luck 😀

The GT1 is the reason why the Boxster has it's lights. I just wish they were deambered from the start.
I'm not a massive fan of the orange, have always done my best to remove it from any car, but something is telling me to stay original with this 986, which is hard as my car has already got clear sides and backs!!
It was all the rage 6/7 years ago to just de-amber the cars by replacing the lights. Still a doable option as everything can be changed back, nothing permanent required.
Just personal choice, get some clear front lights and try them out. You'll never lose money on clear lights

Porsche liked fried eggs once too - GT1

I like them, but I prefer a solid colour centre, something like this

I've been with Manning for a couple of years now for their policy that includes UK track day cover but they are now not offering the track day cover with a road policy.
Can anyone recommend any insurance companies that do offer track day cover included in a main road policy please?
I use Locktons, quite a few good benefits
Benefits for Porsche owners can include:
- Exclusive rating for PCGB
- EU/UK Breakdown cover
- £150k Legal Expenses
- Courtesy car following a covered loss, regardless of fault whilst yours is in for repair
- Any authorised driver over 35 years as standard – named and approved for 34 and below
- Comprehensive cover for policyholder/spouse to drive any other vehicle not owned by them
- Personal business use included as standard
- Non-competitive road rallies (regularity) and club organised track day cover
- Reduction in value cover following an insured loss
- Agreed Value/Reinstatement Value included at no cost
- New car replacement for 24 months following a total loss
- Worldwide physical damage cover
- Options to include spares, tools and auto memorabilia
- Automatic physical loss/damage cover for new acquisitions

Has anyone tried, or would recommend Can Ga+ as a performance mod at the reduced price of £160. Seems to produce decent gains in BHP and a lot more torque for small outlay and it can be controlled from a smart phone.
Cheers Dave

Certainly quoting impressing power gains... a 986 boxster S gains 30 bhp, when my usual tuning company can only manage 12bhp with no mods.
30bhp for £190 sounds like a bargain... but if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is...

Yes, I installed this back In December 2019, had some pop-up appear for 99 euros, at the time it was hard to find any information on it, product was made and sold direct from Germany, but had some Russian connection!
They offer a 50 day money back.
From my experience I noticed more mid range pull, the engine 'seemed' more aggressive, I haven't had the car checked for power gains, I have fitted the stainless steel manifolds, K&N filter, 911 Throttle body and pipework, this was all prior to the GAN module.
It plugs direct into the OBD port and is controllable via an APP, it's reprogrammable to 5 cars.
I never sent mine back after the 50 days as I was happy with what I felt like it had done, it is still connected to my car.

I live in London near Wembley and I'm looking to replace the IMS bearing on an 04 986. Revolution Porsche (in Leeds) quoted me 1620 pounds all in. Is there anywhere closer to London that offers a similar price?

Glad it worked out.
I changed out my original roof for a facelift one 4 years ago - it is definitely an option people should consider.

headlights - why else would you drive one
my money wouldn't stretch to a 987, so I was left with the fried eggs.

What tyres
in 986
4 minutes ago, fizz said:This thread has been quite interesting to read though and right at the start the OP indicated this will be a bit of a minefield and he was right. 😁
There are so many variables that come into what makes a good tyre choice.
The car in question the tyres are going on, what's the best psi for them, the size of the rims, the age of the tyre, the main type of use the tyre will have, the suspension condition, the driver's ability and experience with different tyres to note a few.
I've got relatively new Davanti all round on my 17" rims on my 986S and someone on here told me a friend of theirs hated them on the Scirocco and that they are ditch finders. That's what he experienced and that's valid.
Different tyres work better/worse on different cars, for instance my E60 530D has bridgestone all round yet some of the owners here say they aren't the best yet the E60 owners rave about them.
My past history of older cars means I'm used to budget tyres and what they are capable of (davanti I believe are medium range) and the grip levels are fine for what I expected and when I intentionally provoked the rear to step out on a 2nd gear corner the slide was caught and it was progressive and predictable and came back in line smoothly with no fishtail.
Maybe having owned 2 MR2 turbos in the past which are an absolute pain when the back end steps out even when I was running Toyo Proxes (fav In the MR2 community) that I find the 986 s with davantis really good so far.
Premium tyres will no doubt give you better grip but then the flip side means your more likely to lean on them more when you're being enthusiastic behind the wheel as I am.
And yes... I am one of those who bought the 986s because it was cheap but doesn't mean I'm going to skimp on maintenance.
Tyres are down to personal preference and as long as you know the limits of the tyre you're on, you should generally be fine.
My 2 pence worth anyway.
All 2p's are collected added up at the end of the month.
That is why this forum is so good - who'd have thought a thread on tyres would be so interesting

Has anybody had the Revolution exhaust bypass done on their car and if so what are your thoughts on it, Im looking at getting mine done but fishing for information first.
Hi Mate, the bypass mod is quite common, I had mine done by a different Indy, but I've found a few of these for you it's worth every pound.
and here is mine - not done by revolution but same idea etc - it's money well spent

Sorry if this is something you already know about from the 986 Facebook group, whom I have been boring tonight.
Transport for London say my 2003 986 3.2S is not ULEZ compliant. They say it isn't Euro4 and therefore non-compliant. They say no more than that.
There are hundreds of identical cars which ARE compliant. I have checked, and I have informed TfL, but to no avail.
I am appealing to all owners of identical 2003 S models to, firstly, let me know if they are ULEZ compliant and, crucially, secondly, let me know the emissions data from their V5C. The identity of the vehicle is not so important as the model and year and data, so anonymised info will do.
If I can build up a database for identical cars I may be able to persuade TfL that they have mis-categorised my car.
All help appreciated!
2001 986 S
Red PORSCHE BOXSTER SChangevehicleNo ULEZ charge due for this vehicle
This vehicle meets the emission standards for ULEZ so you don't have to pay this charge when driving within the zone.
Double check that the vehicle details have been typed correctly. You risk getting a penalty if you've identified the wrong vehicle.
No LEZ charge due for this vehicle
The LEZ is different from the ULEZ - it doesn't apply to cars and motorbikes. This vehicle either meets the required emission standards, is exempt from or not affected by the scheme, or is subject to a 100% discount.
Information is based on what we know about your vehicle. This may change without warning - always check to see if you need to pay to drive in London.
