  1. Friends, my local mot tester hinted that I had a broken front coil spring last MOT, almost a year ago and told me to get it fixed. Nearly a year later, it coming up for MOT time again! Where does that time go?

    I better get this done. Man maths told me that this was a great time to go for M030 ride height H&R lowering springs. The estimate from my local indie (LAP 911 in Highworth) was £2500 inc parts and labour for this. Gulp! That's around 50% of the cars value as it stands. 

    The good lady suggested just doing the fronts and the indie quoted £1700 for this. Its still all a bit too steep for me. So i have decided to do the fronts myself, with your help and advice! 

    I have got some quotes from Matthew at Type 911 and the parts he recommends are: 

    Front Shock  £155.00 each
    Front Top Mount + Bearing  £50.00 each
    Front Bump Stop +  Boot kit £24.00

    Rear Shocks  £170.00 each
    Rear Top Mount £45.00 each
    Rear Bump Stop + Boot kit £30.00

    M030 Spring set £150.00

    All plus VAT & Delivery

    Wow, parts have got expensive! Guys, is this what i need? I understand that the front shocks can swell at the bottoms and hence need to be replaced. If i do the front and not the back will i regret it? I don't drive the car on track or even that hard really. Will this be ok for road use? 

    Any advice or links are much appreciated. A picture of my car in better days....

    Can anyone duplicate the test to see if that's normal (I would but my car has a suspected AOS issue)?

    I did the best job i could on the seal, but it was not perfect.

  3. Ok, so some cursory tests have been run.

    On idle the cling film bulged outwards, making sense as this would cause pressurised air to escape via the fuel filler cap making the noise in my last video.

    However, revving the car (sorry neighbours) sucks the cling film back in again. This makes sense as the car is fine, if you use it - like my journey on the motorways, but at more gentle speed like on my road, it didn't like it.

  4. Thanks guys. I will try this again. My Porsche specialist has suggested a new fuel pump and fuel filter as a point to start. 

    The cap is not sucked on when i remove it, so i think it must be being blown outwards, hence the accordion noise. 

    I will ask about the AOS separator.

    I used the car on Thursday and boy was it a hot day. I had to go to a conference called CENEX at Millbrook and was enjoying the drive home, yes it was M1, M25 and M4, but hey ho. Roof down time!!

    I noted that the performance of the car was worsening as i got closer to home. Luckily when on my road, the car started to act odd, hesitation etc. I noted a whine from the fuel filler cap again. 

    You tube video of it here (i laboured the point a bit), but you can hear the sound which is now continuous and also the rough idle and near stalling when the fuel cap was removed and applied. 

    I'm starting to tire of this, plus the car has a cracked front spring and needs shocks on the front. Big bills are looming and my Alpina is also needing rot repair. I am toying with selling up. 

    Any ideas what the noise is?  

  6. Thanks for the continued support friends.

    I took the care to LAP911 in Highworth. Luke checked over the car. He heard the harmonica sound. He suggested a new fuel filter and fuel pump, but also advised that it might be a small valve at the bottom of the filler neck. £350 inc vat to fix. I might just live with it. 

    The oil leak was a quick fix, some tensioner washer. While there, I was also told that I need new brake discs and pads, Spark plug tubes, brake lines, Front suspension springs and shocks.  I plan to get these done over the autumn.

     

     

  7. and after all that. The car still is making humming noises.... A lot less, but its still present. 

    Oddly, I feel that the car is running better - breathing better, more agile. Is this possible?

    I have also noticed a new oil leak.

    Is it time for a Tesla model S?

  8. I managed to sneak out between meetings today, whilst working from home and changed the fuel tank bleeder valve. Thanks @the baron for the link to the video which i followed and managed to get done in a couple of hours due to only having 30min slots.

    I have not tried the car yet. I will keep you all updated.

  9. A big thanks to @the baron who popped in this evening with his code reader. No codes present on my car at all.

    We did note a lumpy idle and the smell of fuel - over fuelling?

    I am not sure if it is connected - but the car seems to hum to itself. Its a humming noise, which i have been told is coming from the ECU - its quite load and can be embarrassing - could it be an air leak? 

  10. My 2000 986S is still running rough after the MAF and then a Oxygen sensor change. Today it got worse. I had to go into Swindon town and the parked the car up. When i returned the car wouldn't start. It turns over and over and only starts if i press the throttle a few times. 

    I am sure that today when i tried to start the car, i heard a 'pop' before the endless turning over began. Its not the first time it has done this and previously after i get her started she runs well. This time she ran really ropey and almost cut out.

    I am starting to think that the best bet is to change the coil packs and the second O2 sensor just to be sure.

    Any ideas folks - Tesla is calling.....
