Aside from the spoilt children and villains, are 911 owners typically bald, aging folk?

    Hey, I moved up to a 911 996, I have hair and I was 31 lol.

I kept the Boxster until September last year though before I thought sensibly for once and decided to sell it and keep one porsche.

  2. How high do the revs go when you start it up? My 996 does this, but then rest of the day starts up fine.

The only difference is when I heard yours it started and then made another sound like chains stretching or something... Otherwise probably normal as everyone else says.

Edit: just listened to it again, did someone push the throttle down when it was started? If so, would explain the second sound as it does sound like the revs were blipped maybe.

  3. For those who have the sprint booster or the GAN tuning module, is there any way you can reduce the HP. I understand this is a controversial question and I may need to run out, but the reason for asking is sometimes you don't need all that power and it would be nice if you could use that for better MPG.

And does the sprint booster/GAN work with the 996 or is it only for the newer cars? I do have a 991 as well which may benefit.

No point trying that at Bournemouth - After escalation to HQ the manager chose to downgrade your complain back to the the lazy incompetent and rude person you were still awaiting a response from in the first place !

Lead by example, ie don't give a monkeys about your customers, let alone your franchise.

Ouch! Doesn't sound pleasant, I guess it varies depending on OPC - I've been using OPC Leeds for many years since I had my 924, so maybe that might have swung them for me? I don't know.

I think the main concern is the PDK gearbox, if something goes wrong with that it can cost a fortune to replace. I know ATM has a thread about his PDK woes, think last time I saw it, he had it fixed at a relative cheap price, so maybe in a few years they won't be too bad. I know its rare for issues to crop up - car insurance is around 300-400 per year, so looking at it like £1200 a year overall - which isnt too bad imo.

  5. I've learnt that with any dealer you have to stick to your guns and not give in to them. Have had them refuse work and then after threatening to go to HQ they've agreed to get it done. Having spoken to the same service manager and explained what is good customer care and service, I think he will think twice when he sees my name come up again 😂

  6. Having had many Porsches, starting at a 924, to the boxster, Cayman, 911 991 and 911 996, I can safely say all of them bar the 991 due to porsche warranty has cost a fair few grand to keep up. The boxster (84k miles now having bought it at 60k) is a 2.5 looks really good, but I've had to go through a list for maintenance works, using indie garages with many new parts including suspension, clutch flywheel, radiators  even had the chain guides done, but I'm now left with a great car that sadly doesn't get driven as much and may need selling.

The Cayman was expensive for the first year (now sold after 7 years where 6 years was the general 1k a year maintenance) and the 996 I bought last October after spending a long time examining it, still, who knew the clutch bracket would fatigue and need welding resulting in half the dash coming out!

Lesson is: you buy a Porsche for the stupid grin you have when you drive, not for economical sense 😂

Thanks for your response. Yes, it had a new AOS shortly before being parked up, and all the pipework attached to it. That's what I went when I said PCV, i just got a little mixed up!

It's done just over 80k. Oil is leaking from the sump and cam covers. I didn't think the cam covers had gaskets on these, just a sealant?

The manifolds have got to be changed anyway, and pulling the engine doesn't concern me. I'd like to see what's going on inside it anyway and change any consumables for longevity.

I'll check the IMS, but I thought the 2.5 was the one that gave the least issues.

2.5 does generally give the least issues. Mine has just over 84k miles and has the dual row bearing. Was one of the main reason for me buying the 2.5.

Sometimes if the car has been sat for a while it does make some weird noises, but once it's had a good run it runs quiet again.

Or maybe they're taking the p*ss? Surely not acceptable to go quiet for weeks on end.

Depends if they've been chased, I know it's not ideal, but I have had to call a Wel know  specialist a couple of times for them to get a move on!

The summer should tip the balance a little further, I think.

So far a very mild winter, I've used the 996 more, but tried to get the Boxster out at least once a week. Apparently, weather is going into double digits in the coming days, that has to be a roof down winter drive! A first for me in December!

I read in the news that coasting is an offence now with the boys in blue!!

With modern autos, they wouldn't be able to tell really?

From driving manuals, the main concern is idiots who do it and don't have control of their car (i.e. going downhill). I'll coast here and there, but wouldn't do it on a downhill for example and rather keep the car in second to use engine braking.

  11. 911 991.1 - PDK no problems at all.

Have  however read of a couple of people who have had some issues, and they are expensive to replace. I think right now, Porsche replace the whole tranny rather than trying to fix the problem. I feel in a few years time, as people understand them more, there will be more "fixes" than replacements.

Not saying don't. just be aware that the result is good compared to a standard halogen but if you have had modern lights (Xenon or LED) the result will not be outstanding.  As I say I have night breakers as the main beam bulbs in my Boxster as they are good enough to go with the Xenon dip of the factory fit Litronic dipped, although these do tilt up a little on main beam to spread more light and boost the main beam halogen bulbs.

In rallying (I was a co-driver) back in the 90s we used all sorts of halogen bulbs up to 120W H1 or H3 bulbs in 8" lenses to throw as much light as possible down the road.  Still the first time I sat behind 4 little 3" Xenon main beams back in 2003 it was light daylight and a better quality of light.

    Just tempering expectations.

Thanks for that! The 911 and Boxster are my main cars so I'm not too accustomed to new technology, yet 😛

  13. Which bulbs would you recommend that make a "good difference" from standard ones?

Been looking for some and these were ones that I was thinking about getting, till I read these comments of course.
