Did you show your workings on the hardtop refurb? It looks like very fine work. I'm interested in adding sound deadening material which might involve re-lining the roof.

I paid a company to do it, I took all the pieces off I wanted covering and hey did the rest.

Mobil is the 'Porsche' oil but any oil with Porsche A40 would be fine.  At 68k miles you should not have wear that would prompt using 5W50, stick to 0W-40.  Mobil 1 is quite costly, but their Super 3000 is also on the Porsche list. Also bear in mind Mobil 1 has always been formulated for high milage and long drain intervals so if you are not going to do high mileage but still do an annual oil change paying top whack for Mobil 1 if you are on a bit of a budget may be using the 3000 will help with that. @the baron I believe is using this oil in his 210k + mile 2.5 986.

I do indeed use Mobile 3000 on my 1997 2.5 Boxster. The key is regular oil changes, I change mine either every year or every 3-5000 miles. I always cut open the oil the filer looking for shiny bits etc, all good so far.

On my 911, (996) I use Millers 10W50 this is recommend by Hartech who rebuilt my engine a few years back,

The 10W50 is also recommend by Porsche for older cars,  or necessarily Millers though. ( Millers is very expensive but worth the extra in my opinion)

  3. @Rav this is a commendable project, which will absorb more time than I think you have, and probably blow your estimated budget quickly.

You will need to budget for some tools, such as the compression clamps for the springs, maybe something to heat up those stubborn bolts plus a whole load of suspension bits that will need replacing plus a full geo at the end (£150).

maybe do a section at a time, attack the front first as this has got the broken spring.

I'm afraid you would have to sneak out of church - I've posted in the meets section there is a coffee run on Sunday 19th November - Thruxton doesn't seem to have done hardly any this year, but has one on then. Glad Karen's eyes got sorted and she's now driving the silver "coffin on wheels" ( I love your headlining really ) 😁

Have booked my free tickets to the event, I sold the hard top as it was only going to be used in the summer, wish I had it now….

    C U on the 19th.

Great project, I look forward to the updates.

I am not a fan of the size of the wheels in your picture, i think they need more rubber.

This colour would work well with a black interior

If that is the one from the Porsche museum Stuttgart then I owned that back in 2006.

Here it is on my drive with my mother in law admiring it. The colour really zings with the cream interior and roof.

  6. Drone is a killer, it will only happen at certain speeds, usually motorway cruising speeds  and it becomes tiring. Not had it on the Boxster as I have stuck with OEM. I did have it on the 996 when I first bought it, changed to a Dansk exhaust within the first week, just couldn’t live with it.

  7. I think too much messing around with this, stick it back on FB or eBay and get yourself another bumper for your year model, get the paint code from the sticker in the frunk.

Douglas Valley breakers are very good and will make sure it’s the right model and colour.

Yes, I was thinking she likely has the dual row bearing, so low risk of failure. But there is all the talk of putting the LN bearing in pre-emptively when the clutch is done, just in case. So I'm not sure where to go on this one, it seems to create some arguments. I have heard of one or two 2.5 models suffering IMS failure.

I had my clutch done at 207k I have a 1997 2.5, after lots of research I didn’t replace the IMS, by putting a new one in at that many miles there will be lots of wear on other parts around that area which the old bearing has worn/bedded in with, you could end up with a failure due to this, so best left alone, I did have the RMS done at the same time. Which you might want to consider, it’s a cheap future proofer.

I watched your video and immediately thought that the fuel cap was very loose when you unscrewed it. Also, when you re tighten at the end of the video, I don't hear any clicks. Mine (987) clicks upon re-tightening.

The 986 caps just tighten to a stop no clicks

Possible crank shaft position sensor, however you stay it starts immediately after, generally with CPS it needs time to cool before it will restart

This would be my guess too having experienced similar with my 986 and 996

  13. I had this issue with my 996, turned out to be fuel filler vent, I bought the part from my OPC, this could be why your smelling petrol too and could cause your starting issues maybe, here’s a video on how to swap. It took me about an hour to swap, out

In your situation it sounds like the pop was due to fuel going down then igniting. This would happen if the engine and exhaust were still got.

It sounds like you have a hot start problem ie difficulty starting after a run. This is a classic symptom of crank position sensor.

I would second that although when we ran the OBD reader it pulled up the oxygen sensor, it might be worth me popping over when I next pass your house, could be Monday if your around

  15. Sorry, bit late to the party, but I have been communicating with @Rav via txt and my advice was to walk away if that’s the attitude towards an inspection.

I am lucky enough to have both a 986 and 996, you can’t really compare them, they are just different even if they look the same from the front., you can’t really co pare mid engine and rear engined Porsches. I love both for different reasons. However  if I had to choose one to keep forever it would be the 911. It’s faster, handles better if driven properly prettier, bigger in side, better in the winter, stiffer and more of an occasion to drive, and the chances are from an investment point of view you are more likely to get any money you invest in the car back as the 996 is really starting to be appreciated by People wanted a classic Porsche that drives like a 911 and looks like a 911,

in terms of 911’s I will leave you with this quote, in a hide tide all ships rise, the 996 is starting to be loved for the great car this is, grab one while the prices are still relatively low.
