Finally done, at least I hope so, started the car and the battery warning light goes out, test drive tomorrow. I bought a new belt from porsche, £42, (I know), I did ask how much for a new alternator. £1600 I think he said, we don't sell many, lol.. The job has been a struggle for me, getting it in and out, also getting the bolts to line up, I think I've cross threaded the so called easy one,but the  belt runs OK. The alternator was £80 from a breakers yard on the net, might get the old one looked at, might just be the voltage regulator (hey listen to me),🙃, anyway thanks for the steer cwt.. 👍

Get one of the eBay voltage dongles I've linked before. Plugs into cig lighter and you can see when you are stick g all g whether in ha e 14+v to charge up. Or of your alternator is gone you will see the voltage decrease as each mile goes.

After changing the alternator I  got one of those dongles, ~14v on tick over and 12v with engine off...looking good. Thanks for the tip

  3. I'm half way through the replacement, belt off but I'll need a 11mm ring spanner to get the tapered nut off, seen some stuff on YouTube shows  15mm hex bolts instead of the taper ones, the bush seems a pain, plenty of tapping with a hammer seems the way to go.

Got an alternator from a breakers yard, belt looks good, £40 new one at Opc, might treat myself. Must confess I'm a novice with this 🧐

That'll be an alternator.  I had exactly the same (except for AA) experience about a year ago.  You can get an exchange Bosch unit (OE) from an auto electrics factor for about £250 exchange on a one year warranty. Or a replacement ranging from cheapest at about £130 through to about £800.  When mine went I settled for a NAPA unit with 2 year guarantee for about £165.  Not missed a beat so far in a year, and I still have the original unit to get the voltage regulator checked on some time (that's what has most likely failed) so I'll have a spare.

DIY replacement is possible, the bottom right bolt with the tapered nut on the far end it a bit of a pain.  There are some good YouTube videos. Worth changing the auxiliary drive belt at the same time unless it has been done recently as well as checking all the pulleys for rough running bearings.

Great. Thanks for your help, not sure if I'm up to the DIY repair but maybe it's time to try.

  5. Had a similar problem today, took the car on aong run for a game of golf, stalled at the entrance and wouldn't start, clicking, thought it was the starter motor. Started finf after the round but 20mins later the battery warning light was on, kepe driving then the abs and ofhe lights, car packed up, got the RAC, hoping its just a new battery or alternator and that I haven't made it worse, good that the RAC guy showed me how to flip the boney on the battery post..
