If you have access to a copy of the 101 Projects for your Boxster book, or go to the Pelican website Porsche Boxster 996 Gauge Cluster Upgrade - 986 / 987 (1997-08) - Pelican Parts Technical Article there is a swap to 996 instruments which would have to deal with similar issues.

    @Richard Hamilton ??

@½cwt Yes I have had a read and seems very easy, almost too easy. I then went out to do some more googling and some places suggested more coding/ fiddling was needed :( but you never know what to believe....

Yes you can swap out the whole cluster to the one you have linked.

But you may to upgrade to the dot matrix cluster like the one in the link below.  Gives a bit more information in the centre display.

    2002 PORSCHE BOXSTER S 986 - SPEEDO / INSTRUMENT CLUSTER 98664123700 #SLG | eBay

    Have you got OBC?

@Sanky Yes it has OBC, thanks for the link :thumbsup_still:

I have a speedo from a later model than mine going begging if you want it. It's probably not going to work on your car but you can cannibalise bits that you need out of it and maybe get yours working.

I'll take pics when I get home so you can see what it looks like (all I used was the binnacle and I took the little plastic knobs as spares if mine should fail).

Cheers! @RedBarediver Feel free to PM or post in here

  2. Morning all!

After a long winter, I've remembered I've still got the issue of a speedo that doesn't work! :( After being heavy handed removing the dial fascias and buggering things up I no longer know how fast I am going!

In an attempt for a temporary quick fix, is it possible to swap out the whole cluster? Something like THIS ?
    I have a 2003 S so I understand it needs to be a 2002-2004 cluster from another S.

The mileage will not match but I believe that can be corrected by some programming. I have read that the stock radio will/ can lock out but I no longer have a stock radio.

Anyone know if it's a simple plug and play? Is there anything else to consider?

Go to Groupon and get a cheap ATS Euromaster a/c test and refill.  At least for about £40 you will know if it is a leak or just low pressure.  At least you can tell a buyer either way.  If ti is a condenser, a DIY fix is an afternoon's work and under £200 if you go for mid range after market parts.

Where are you on tyres, brakes, clutch, rest of the suspension etc. i.e. the big spend items.  This will encourage or put off people.  If they come on here though they will be advised to budget £1.5-2k on fixes over the first year or so.

Good thinking RE the a/c test!
Plenty of tread on all the tyres although fronts are due for a change shortly due to the age, front brakes/ pads done a couple of thousand or even less and rears around 5k and clutch has plenty of life left in it.

All great points and exactly the kind of points I wanted, helps me build a better ‘for sale’ ad! 😃👍🏼

  4. A question (that has been asked many times) to the knowledgeable lot on BoXa.net

My 986S is going up for sale. It’s in good condition, a couple of nicks and scratches, and the wheels need a refurb. Starts on the button and drives very well, it just doesn’t get the use it deserves, especially now I have another exciting car to drive.

    Arctic silver

    MY03

    Approx. 160,000 miles

    Part service history

    Bad points -

Central locking only works with key.

    1 key.

    Air con not getting cold

Rev counter needle doesn’t display revs (cannot work out the cause of this - annoyingly)

    Other points -

    Exhaust back box bypass

1 touch on the go roof operation

Heated seats (DIY fit not OEM)

    Double Din touch screen

Rear speaker, dash speakers and door speakers upgraded

    OEM Short shifter

    18” Carrera wheels

    DRL hack

    Twin fog conversion

Front coffin arms refreshed and then tracking sorted

The question is how much should the starting price be?! A tough one, and as well all know it’s only worth what someone wants to pay for it!

    Hi,

I am in the same situation as you in that I have to lock and unlock with my key. The previous owner must have un plugged the siren but when unlocking the hazard warning lights start flashing so I have to put the key in the  ignition and turn to stop the lights. For some reason I also have to unlock the passenger door from the inside. I put up with this due to the cost of getting the key fob reprogrammed .

    Same here. F’ing annoying

Yes, I believe so. I’m not a fan of the gold bits, but a 986 in launch colours does it for me 👍

The wheels work for me. The vents on the other hand.
It’s been there a few weeks now, which show was it for?

I’ve stripped one of these clusters and taking the PCB’s apart isn’t as bad as getting the dial faces off in my opinion. If it’s the little motor you are after I’ve got one from an 04 cluster, (green, blue & grey plugs) I can let you have.

Yes I believe it is the motor, I was clearly a little heavy handed! If you would be willing to let it go I don’t mind paying obviously! 😁👍🏼

That’s a very good point @Sanky  They’re considerably cheaper too.
Let me dig out the link to the place I got it from when I get home tonight and I’ll let you know. They were great to deal with

Thanks @Bigfatfish that seems like the going rate for a used unit too
