Hi Theo
I reasoned that the rear discs do not get so hot. Front discs do certainly get hot, so I would be less confident with those. I will probably go with it when I take the front discs off though. Its not like I track the car.
Berni
Okay Berni,
Thanks for the feedback, I will be tracking mine so will order some high temperature paint. 👍

Hi
Hacksawed out the rest of the calliper bolt today. It put up a good fight I can tell you. I also ordered a M12 x 1.5 tap from Amazon, on prime next day delivery. I really hope the thread has survived well enough.
I also gave my rear disc hats their second coat of black hammerite, and put the parking brake back together having cleaned and freed it all off.
Have a couple of disc retaining screws to drill out. Ordered a bag of stainless ones from screwfix.
All the best
Berni
Hi Bernie,
I see you used black hammerite on the rear disc hats. Does the paint need to be high temperature paint as I have some standard hammerite left to paint the new front discs?

M12 x 1.5 fine metric thread, not normal 1.75 mm pitch... Always good to run a tap through if you have the right size to help prevent future seizes even if a bolt does come out OK.
Timeserts are a good repair option if you have no other option with a really bad thread.
Thanks...1.5 pitch makes it a limited option. Ordered...also need to order the caliper socket as the new ones have a different head!

Hi
I snapped of a calliper bolt. Ugh. Three times. Now its flush. Time for the drill..................
Berni
Mine took some aluminium and dragged it all along the thread...ordered two taps to see if I can cut a new thread. If this doesn't work I will look at alternatives!
Passenger top caliper bolt..article says, steel and aluminium are not a partnership made in heaven.
Bernie...freed back how you get on.

Gave the engine bay a quick clean and new air filter fitted
Engine was given a quick wd40 oily rag wipe over.as it's never seen that's good enough
It wasn't too mucky, last opened in 2018
never in my life has changing an air filter taken half an hour 😂but I did clean the drains and lubricate the roof mechanism, nice smooth action now
Looking good...what did you do to lubricate the roof.

Yesterday evening I snapped off two of the sill studs on the rear undertray trying to remove the 10mm plastic nuts.
What is a good solution for replacement?

well done, that’s my next service item. any tips? i understand it’s under pipe work but to be fair havnt looked for it yet just remember seeing it in a picture once
I have the car up on 4 axle stands...would have been better if it was up another notch or two for more space.
Follow the guide listed above, but I also removed the bolts on the cooling pipes nearer the front of the car as this allows more wiggle movement. I also release two clips along the fuel pipe route.
The fuel filter connections are squeeze fit which is good to know. I manage to remove the filter from the fuel pipes with minimal spillage, until it actually came to removing it between the two pipes..splash!
Going to refresh the undertray too..
Enjoy...

Pelican maintenance book says 1 hour to replace fuel filter. I was at least double that. First time doing this job so learnt alot. Datestamp on old filter was 2004...another job off the list.

Finished replacing the spark plug tubes on the passenger side. Replaced all the coil packs recently purchased from Autodoc. Cleaned the inner rear arches and all boxed up.

I spent five hours grafting with no tools at all, I woudn't say it was detailing at its finest but it works for me...... A good wax and polish and loads of TLC 🙂
Nice just to chill and do a few jobs on the car. Nice motor, guards red always works.👍

Today, washed, waxed, detailed , fed the seats copiously with leather hide food, kept it outside in the sun so the hide food was "sucked" into the leather, fitted nice polished rings to the instrument cluster, fitted "Porsche" logo seat belt pads, cut and polished the headlamp plastics, generally spent the day fiddling.
had to stop when my wife reminded me it was our wedding anniversary. ..........
Hey ho Such is life
Love the wife quote...which leather balm did you use?

Today I have replaced 3 of spark plug tubes. The attwood drain plug didn't work, I ended up sacrificing a 10mm coach bolt. This worked really well after grinding the head slightly to fit down the tube Didn't realise the tubes had a slightly tapered.
Will do the other side tomorrow and clean the bottom part of the engine too.

Changed the air filter and cleaned the engine and the throttle body...
Checked the power steering fluid reservoir, oil appears to be below the cold marker so have ordered hydraulic fluid.

Car has new rear ARB bushings, rear shocks and tyres all round. To make it go really fast...I have replaced the spark plugs.
First mini run out after the parts have been replaced. On a long stretch of road I safely overtook a few cars only to see a Bentley copying my every move. Went again and the she was behind me...
I turned off onto a twisty section and thought this will be interesting...Bentley went straight on...I'm kind if glad really.
Came across a 987s in front of me at some lights...wasn't sure of Boxster protocol so just sat behind him. Mx5 NA would have been a wave.
Love the car noise above 4k and power delivery...would be good to do the front shocks in the future.
What have YOU done to your 986 today ?

How painful...nearly finished though Berni, it will be worth all the work in the end and you'll know every inch of the car is 100%👍
