  1. When my 986 was still a 3.2 it had quite a few “bolt on” tweaks around intake and exhaust. All of which were about improving the engine’s breathability.

The car was then mapped by Parr on their hub dyno to make sure those tweaks were utilised. I do not have the torque data to hand but what I can tell you is that in the real world using 6th at 70mph a 3.6 996 couldn’t get away from it without a downshift and if I did the same whatever gap had opened was promptly closed.

If you’re feeling short changed in terms of torque/bhp then put some proper miles on the car with fresh fuel (98/99) after 200 miles or so the ECU will have recalibrated as far as the factory map will allow.

I’ve just been through this process with mine following some vac system fettling and the gains over time are tangible.

If it’s your track toy then use the engine as you would in that context. You’ll be surprised just how much that built-in tune-up will find you, especially in terms of responsiveness.

More torque/bhp will then only really be found by a mapping session, ideally with someone who understands the idiosyncrasies of the water-cooled F6 architecture.

Wheel was made by the company for me to fit to the 996, no dodgy attachments bar changing from 2 stage bag to 1 stage as mentioned above

Brilliant - can you share the name of the company please?

Or better still do you have a link to their website or socials?

    Thanks

@map I did see an adapter boss once for this but it pushed the steering wheel forward a couple of inches and the airbag and horn did not function.

Thank you - not sure I want to lose the airbag.

    EDIT:

Found the company you might be referring to:

    https://spacershop.com/categoria-prodotto/distanziali-volante/distanziale-volante-porsche/

Looking at the photos in @zagamuffin’s photo the wheel doesn’t look to be as far from the stalks as the spacershop item is 🤔

Spacershop also commented that the airbag firing tech is single stage in 9x6 whereas later vehicles used a 2 stage system.

This looks very interesting - can anyone tell me where I go to find the what and how for this please?

For clarity I’d like to know how to get this non-multifunction wheel on to a 986 as pictured in @zagamuffin’s post quoted above.

    All relevant pointers/links welcome.

    Thank you.

Shared enthusiasm. Well done for inviting him into your pride & joy.

    Thank you.

To date I’ve only ever had a positive response face to face.

My favourite was the group of lads, all mid teens who walked past it parked near our home in London on their way to the local comp as I was heading back to the house

One of them peered inside the window and jumped out of their skin when it unlocked.

Him: ”Wasn’t touching it - sorry”

Me: “I know - want to have a look around it?”

    Them: “Yes”

and so doors are opened and the questions flowed thick and fast:

    “Where’s the engine?”

“What’s the fastest you driven it?

”Been on a race track with it?

    and so on

For months random teenage lads, either in a group or on their own would say whatever the urban/street version of “Hello” was then - I’d always acknowledge them but I was a bit confused.

Then one day it clicked - they were the guys from that morning.

  7. Made someone smile - the pharmacy delivery guy asked if the 986 was mine.

He knew enough to know it isn't standard.

So I got the key and let him have a look around and sit in it.

Then I fired it up and his smiles turned to laughter.

"That's madness - and I love it - great car mate"

That sort of unbridled, petrolhead response to my 986 is a real shot in the arm for people like us.

Petrolheads - real petrolheads - speak the same language regardless of who they are, what their background or current reality is.  So now I'm smiling too.

    Have a great weekend 👍

  8. Owned mine - or does it possess me? - since May 2007.

Cannot see me replacing it with another Boxster unless it was a 982 Spyder.

Haven’t been in another car that ticks as many boxes as my 986 does - so can’t see it going to facilitate replacement with something else either.

My 2006 Range Rover Sport does dog box, pick-up truck and general smoking around duties - but writing this reminds me to make more use of the 986.

Not a 987 and no affinity knowledge or experience of the manufacturer (other than he seem to like throwing a 996 around in the snow) but given recent chat about spot lights and cameras etc.

found on a random Facebook 996 group.

Am in contact with him. Will update as I learn more.

    That’s the cookie :)

map is there any functional or aesthetic reason the spots are very yellow? I find them incongruous on a millennial car.

    Thank you for asking:

Yellow lenses reduce reflected glare in wet or misty conditions at night time. This increases distance and detail visibility which makes it safer to pootle in those conditions

So their colour and low height make them ideally suited for the soupy conditions found ooop norf.

This pair are switched: with main beam, off or on. This means I can use them without out the car’s own lights being on.

Definitely personal taste, saw this one at the Gaydon meet - my mate who usually has similar opinions to me said much the same and was questioning why anyone would “ruin” a car like this.

I could see the appeal myself, more so if the rest of the car was filthy or abused in some way - if it looked like it hadn’t been washed since it left the Sahara then great.

    Are you referencing this car?

    G8M02fM.jpg

If so fair enough - there are a plethora of changes to the car that have folk doubting and sometimes vehemently disliking. That’s cool, it wasn’t built for anyones’ likes but mine.

In terms of cleanliness - I agree, better to see a car that’s progressed and pootled than simply polished - this car is usually covered somewhere in this spectrum of road use filth:

8hr progress (Calais to Courmayeur) carnage - the aux driving lamps would’ve have helped on that run

There are plans to increase the lighting resource on the car - including some incorporated on the RTS. As and when they’re added I’ll update this thread.

I think we are looking at the saying, “you get what you pay for”.

    Pretty much.

That said some folk, on low annual mileages, have been satisfied with generic “sport” manifolds and cats. A few on here have also seen some useful dyno results with those systems.  Am sure they’ll chime in when they spot your thread.

Personally I value the reassurance of a brand/business with a solid track record in Porsche aftermarket parts for my daily driver. This includes documented support for their gain claims and a post sale support service.

I have swapped over the ballasts and lamps with each other and the fault moves to the other headlight.

Are the ballast and lamp a single assembly?

If not have you swapped the lamp only?

It may be that you only need replace the lamp or the ballast.

Ha Ha - there are endless changes to my car that you guys are likely to find unpalatable - head over to my running report, you'll find all of them in there 🤣

    But no detailing/polishing :whistle1:
