@map did you have something like this?

Not those seats but similar fabric 👇

    ….and for a good while I owned a 1982 911SC alongside my 986.

AFAIK the seats in the OP’s post are pretty hard to come by - at least as originals.

Just fitted one only problem is can’t get body parts back on as the exhaust pipes are pointing up by fifteen degrees .

If you post a photo - especially of the mounts for the silencer - someone may have been there before and be able to help.

Have seen multiple silencer hanging options - some are “better” for fine tuning the alignment.

I therefore wonder if we are doing the 74mm tb and plenum conversion on our 986’s should we be using a 90mm maf tube?

Be careful of MAF sensor housing (you mentioned maf tube) dimensions - my understanding is that the MAF:Housing ratios are calibrated in some way.

    I see that the Bosch MAF listed for 986 2.7 & 3.2 is the same part number as that listed for Porsche 996 3.6cc 2002 + Porsche 997 C2 / C4 3.6L, 3.8L & Porsche 997 MKII 2009

Based on some motorsport feedback of a few years ago I retain a nagging doubt there's some form of engine config specific calibration - maybe it's in the engine's mapping?

Happy for anyone with specific knowledge to share that along with supporting engineering type info.

If machined out to take the larger diameter bearing surely?  Not really practical as a maintenance change.

    Not in my case.

The “larger” IMS and bearing in my car (M96) was used in the last of that engine series’ production. I *think* it found its way into early 9x7 production.  Most people think of it as the bigger component set from the 997.

Installation is “split and fit” - no machining required - but it isn’t doable with an assembled engine.

  5. @Photogirl - one option would be to get the car to the point it is MOT'd then shop around with a trailered service in mind.

For example I had my car collected from Beverley (East Riding of Yorkshire) and delivered to SVP in Worcestershire.  That's a long way and it cost me around £300.  For comparison: I reckon £70 in fuel and around £120 in train fares plus a lost day and who knows what aggro from delays/missed connections.

You needn't go that far but a round trip of even £400 could well still be a saving.

The other option is a Trade Plate Driver - you see these red and white plates in vehicles all the time and all you're hiring is the driver's time.  A service like this could also be useful - find a reasonably priced place to do the work and get the driver to deliver the car for you - here's a website (never used them and cannot therefore recommend):

Wonder if these would work as the most simple solution ? :

    https://www.design911shop.com/p/brey-krause-race-seat-side-mounts-for-floor-mounting-gt3-seats---drivers-side-porsches-996---boxster/

Seems to just fit to the existing Porsche slider, then to the Recaro.

It can't be this simple, can it ?!?

It just might be. Call D911 and ask them - do you need extra parts for seat belt mounts or harnesses as examples? Then confirm that parts list and lead times via email before ordering/paying

Assuming that all works out this “How To” might be helpful:

Needs a vent somewhere or it will cause a vacuum. Not sure if it is supposed to be at the cap though.

Shouldn't be through the filler cap.  Isn't assisting breathing what the AOS does...?

Fuel tank has a breather - to my knowledge the fuel cap should be “sealed” - think of the air rush when you take the cap off a nearly empty tank. Vaguely remember someone having problems like this which were eased if not cured with a cap change as mentioned previously.

AOS is a different subsystem - Air Oil Separator - nothing to do with fuelling.  The AOS takes excess air pressure which carries oil mist from the engine’s internals.

This air/oil mist flows into a chamber which separates most of the oil from the pressurised airflow. The oil is returned to the oil system and the air is fed into the intake plenum. That air - with some oil residue - is then put through the combustion process.

When the AOS fails you get the tell tale smoke signals - you can also find some oil in the plenum.

That’s interesting as he said that pumping the accelerator seemed to have an effect.

And this was what led me to look at the throttle control aspect.

No-one I spoke to about this problem and symptoms pointed towards the TPS - I vaguely remember finding something in a very, very old post on a US forum that got me to look into the TPS in more detail.

On older e-throttle cars the TPS is part of the Throttle Body. Later cars (mine is 2002MY) have the TPS within the accelerator pedal.

I think the sensor gets worn and produces erroneous resistance figures which the ECU looks-up in the mapping tables that results in odd fuelling behaviours. I think the cooling down bit basically allows any residual resistance to be dissipated and so for a while the TPS is sending more accurate data until it “heats up” again.

Italicised comments should be “fact checked” by an electronics engineer.

Regardless I’d change the CPS before the TPS. The CPS seems to be a more common failure.

  9. I had the same symptoms and changed the Crank Position Sensor - that didn’t resolve it.

The problem didn’t produce an error code either. After bit of digging I changed the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which is part of my accelerator pedal.

    This cured the problem.

Depending on the car the TPS is either on the Throttle Body or the Throttle Pedal.

In your case @Rav I’d change the CPS and if that doesn’t chase the problem away change the TPS

The car has 18" carrera 2 alloys. The rears have 17mm spacers to fit the hub.

Suspect that these wheels are from a 996 and not 986 originals.

Spacer and tyre sizes are the clues for me.

If I’m correct then I imagine that you should be able to buy a 986 set and then sell the 996 set so that you are essentially cash neutral.

That said a number of people run 996 wheels and non-standard  tyre sizes without any problems.

I do wish I could get another inch or two in the cabin so I can scoot the seat back a bit more.

Isn’t there a travel restrictor in the 986 seat runners that is omitted from the 996 seat runners?

If so could you just remove that and gain another bit of rearward adjustment.

You’ll need to validate this and am happy to be corrected.

Not quite done to the car, but the latest edition of Originale arrived from Porsche Classic.  Looking forward to passing a few idle moments reading it.

Did you spot the mis-spelling of Boxster on the opening page?

Almost sent the thing back in disgust.

Tried loads of times. I’ve opened manually, put it in the ignition, taken it out, pressed for 10 seconds yet none of this synchs either keys 🤔

Have you actually started the car having put the key in the ignition?

Very nice! What is the panel on the dash under the A/C control? Some kind of stereo and data display...?

    Thank you.

It’s an Android headunit - works well enough in CarPlay mode but will be replaced with something more suited to the car’s interior in due course. That upgrade will include some drive train monitoring too.
