What's the best additive I could use beforehand?

I have used CataClean (or similar spelling) which improved things.

If you can't get your hands on that then I use the Wynns Gold product on our two diesel Range Rovers and it's very impressive - injector efficiency gains tracked by the diagnostic tool.  Whilst you wouldn't use the diesel products in your 986 I'd be pretty happy to use the relevant petrol Wynns Gold products.

JES, the engine is alive!!! NO any chain rattle at the start up, no smoke at the start up and the idle is super smooth. The best part is that the throttle response is very very fast now 😎

P.S. How can I upload a video here? (Imgur is fine with images, but videos...)

Great news and well done both of you.

I’ve used Vimeo for video hosting to this forum. Am sure YouTube can also be used.

  3. One of the jobs of the AOS is to help manage crankcase/sump pressures. My understanding is that a catch can won’t necessarily do this.

In terms of a replacement AOS pipework - the one in your engine has been through loads of heat/cool cycles and who knows how it’s been twisted during maintenance.  Am replacing the AOS pipeage on my car and it has all been sourced via the OPC and the prices seemed like good value. I’d replace the pipes and let it be.

Most mods can be reverted to standard if required... im going to swap back to standard brake pads and exhaust before selling up and upgrading to a 987.

This all made sense right up to the nonsense about 987 being an upgrade to a Boxster 🤦‍♂️🤣

The X73 rear ARB allows you to rotate the car under throttle.

What is the physics/engineering behind this?

How is the X73 ARB integrated with the car’s stability management electronics?

Don’t have any e-stability on my aged 986 but I do have a locking diff and an adjustable ARB on the rear axle - am always keen to learn about chassis behaviour which is why I ask the question.

    Thanks in advance.

New cat pipe fitted, back box fitted, started and checked working ok, all good, sounds good.  Went to put the bumper back on, and the tail pipes are to high up, so the bumper now won't fit, started getting dark, so gave up for the evening.

    Anyone else had this problem?

Are you using the correct hanger/bracket for your car? There is a difference between 2.7 and 3.2 parts.

Sorry but I was hoping for something a little more adventurous.

Er 🤔 cutting the panels off a perfectly good vehicle is right up there as far as car adventures go in my book.

Appreciate you’re referencing the colour options however the body volume of this adventure isn’t the same as the inspiration.

356s are tiny compared to a 987. A 356’s volume “tucks in and under” far more than the 987 chassis will permit.  The wheels on the 987 are much bigger and more fully fill the arches than you see on a factory 356 - this alters the way we see colour.

There are some amazing heritage colours - a personal favourite is Tobacco Metallic which is a really rich bronze hue seen on the original 930s. That might work on this shape - that said I think the options being considered will work well on this car - especially with the black interior.

Now to set the alignment again...

This may well address the rear axle slip you mentioned.

It sounds as though the car’s rake has altered which will affect the geometry. Get that sorted and see what the result is.

the extent of a disciplinary hearing that took 5 months to get together after announcing it last year.

Assuming it got to tribunal the reality of this delay would be considered unacceptable - it is also almost certainly contrary to the employer’s own processes/timelines.

If she wants out then there’s probably a play in this and the manager’s subsequent behaviour that might be leveraged. To be clear I am not an Employment Lawyer but have handled these “management” situations previously. Feel free to PM me if you want to kick some of this around before going to the relevant specialist for specific advice.

  10. You can see the mounting points on my (admittedly very aftermarket) system:

Manifolds are self explanatory - brackets on silencer bolt up to the gearbox hanger yellow points on photo below:

Blue bolts fix to gearbox hanger.

Does the exhaust have any flex points or places where movement is allowed.  I assume it mounts to the engine with the manifolds but then connects up at the back and blots to a bracket under the boot.  So it is bolted to the engine and the car.  If the engine moves around then where does that movement or flex go in the exhaust?

    Manifolds bolt to engine.
Silencer bolts to rear of gearbox.
    Gearbox is bolted to engine.

The whole exhaust system is mounted on the gearbox/engine assembly so the exhaust, engine & gearbox move as a single unit.

I'm going more for the 'Outlaw' look (company in the States who rebuild original 356s).

    These people?

He and his team are wizards when it comes to the 356. They have a twin turbo flat four option which sounds manic - they used it in their MOMO build inspired by the 935s of the 70s.

About 5 years ago I was lucky enough to meet and speak with him (I asked an open question and listened intently to his fulsome answer - and then another open question, a considered response and so on) he seems very genuine and is undoubtedly a highly accomplished engineer.

I think for the majority the 986 is an introduction to Porsche ownership on a budget and really we all want a 911😊

When I purchased mine it cost £20k. I have not added up the subsequent invoices. There’s nothing “budget” about it apart from “over budget” possibly

Had a proper 911SC hotrod during the time I’ve owned my 986. Massive sense of occasion - not as much fun as my lil’ ol’ Boxster.

  14. Meh - been done a good few years ago (minus the “quarter roll cage”) by a number of this very forum’s members.

That said it’s always great to see the Boxster being promoted.

    987 onwards? Just numbers.

p.s. are these 911 turbo wheels?

Looks great and it’s in the quickest colour.

Am pretty certain that the wheels are a 986 specific Turbo Design. If they were 911 (996) wheels they would be wider and almost certainly stick out beyond the wheel arches.

Hardtop really suits the 986 and provides two distinct experiences.

    👏

  16. I have a 74mm IPD plenum on my 986. It was originally installed as part of a fairly comprehensive set of bolt on mods and extensive dyno mapping when it was still a 3.2 motor.

All in we saw over 290bhp (factory 250bhp) so I am happy they add value however I do think you gain the most when they’re added as part of an package of upgrades.

  17. Grew up with a Petrol Head Father - he still is a Petrol Head albeit he's slowed down in recent years.  We lived near Silverstone so I have many memories of motorsport there as well as at Brands and Oulton Park.  Before I was 10 I was given a radio controlled 935-77 - I still have it and it still make me smile.  Mum and Dad had their own business so they tended to have more discrete quick cars.  Nothing outrageous, usually de-badged and if he'd had his way de-winged too.  At one point he had a factory order for an original 323i with LSD, dog leg 5 speeder and various other go quicker goodies (badged as a 316) but the dealership screwed up and it never arrived - he ended up with an Opel Ascona which was way better than expected.

He finally threw in the towel with performance saloons when he just missed the list for a Sierra Cosworth RS500 - he bought a lot of Ford cars and Trucks so was offered a place on this list on the basis that others would cancel and he'd end up with one.  He didn't - so he took on his Sales Manager's diesel Sierra and discovered he was quicker cross country in that than he was in the XR4i - he found a new game and in my early teens I loved it - drive an underdog car smoothly, with maximum momentum and minimal braking to see just how quickly you can cover the ground.  40 years on I still play that "underdog fast" game.

In my early 20's life got pretty difficult in a very short space of time - I've written about this previously - at my lowest point I set myself the objective of one day owning a sports car.  During the intervening years I owned an Austin Metro 1l Van Conversion that I re-converted, a Rover 214SLi, then drove lots of company diesel workhorses one of which I purchased when I changed job.

All of them were driven "underdog fast".

Then I met a girl who one day said to me - "Why don't you go and find that sports car which you very rarely mention but clearly means so much?" and this is the start of how I ended up with my 986.  Just as importantly some years later the same girl was mad enough to say "Yes" and let me become her husband.

not_yet_mrs_map started looking at sports cars and it was her that found the 986S at Mole Valley - "just go and have a look" when I complained that I didn't like the 986 shape.  So I popped in to Mole Valley one lunchtime and drove it.  I knew almost instantly that I wanted this car, I could feel what was going on - it was like opening the doors to a rock concert - everything I'd driven to that point was muffled, and then I drove this.

I didn't like how it looked (am growing to appreciate it now though), I'd really wanted a black one - it's silver and any number of other minor negatives.  But driving it just smothered all those doubts with the feedback, noise and the view out of the windscreen down to the road between the wings.

That was 15 years ago - I still own it.  It's on its 4th engine, 2nd clutch and heaven knows how many sets of tyres over the 100K+ miles I've driven it.  It's been to that place where others would have given up and yet I wouldn't because it's such an important part of my life.

Today my 986 is at first glance a slightly tired version of the car I purchased 15 years ago.  Thing is it is almost nothing like the car I bought then and my driving has developed along with the tweaks over time.

One thing I never expected to find was the people that make up Car Culture's Sub-Cultures - this forum is a wonderful example of great car people.

We don't see him much round these parts now but @plynchy is the star who trailered my car with the failed Porsche refurbed engine to a place where the AA would collect it.  People like @Araf and @Boxsey who made track days accessible to a newbie. Then there are the forum runs - organised by  @Cocky & @RBD914 v2. Plus my co-conspirators for the Highlands Run @fat haggis & @Scubaregs.  I've bumped into folk at the Channel Tunnel going to Spa who wandered over because as car-nutters they realised the 986 wasn't standard.  Those two (The HooliGannons - not of this neighbourhood) introduced me to driving properly quickly which  boosted my confidence in my own abilities as well as being the lone voices encouraging further tweaks to my 986 which have made it "underdog faster 2.0"

And remember that 935-77 model?  I now get to watch a FIA Papered 935 being built - not mine - but all the stuff that fascinated me about that model is coming to life full sized.

And all of this is down to my 986.
