P.S. does it still have my wheels on it?

Not at the moment - can’t find the right all weather road tyres in those sizes - they might just become my track wheels - supa lite innit - could be ace with R888Rs on ‘em.

  2. Well I own a super rare, one off, really unique, single year 986 with more power, more engines, bigger pistons, funny seats, a bonkers shifter and big yellow lights on the front.

Every single panel has been artisan patina’d.

The brake calipers are custom hot road salt finished and there’s no “standing around corrosion” on the disks.

If I get Timpsons to engrave a big dog tag with:

    “Boxster RSR 1 of 1”

and stick it on the dashboard how much do you think it’ll be worth?

    To a collector obvs.

I can not read what he as said as I have blocked all contact from him.

I find him an offensive racist.

I can and do read what he posts - as I do yours - given we’re sharing opinions mine, of @EXY, isn’t aligned with yours.

Unlike most on this forum I have dealt with @EXY “off forum” and that was an entirely positive experience - in much the same vein as your customers describe you.

Whether or not @EXY is offensive is a matter of perspective - there are any number of posts on this forum from a range of contributors that I would describe as narrow-minded, tiresome, over-bearing and righteous to the point of fervour. But that’s OK because I’m here to learn more about the car I drive, share my own experiences in the hope they’re of interest to others and maybe help someone with the more esoteric parts of the ownership journey.

  4. The service history on my car looks like a cross between the medical records of Steve Austin and Frankenstein’s Creature.

A morbidly fascinating, horrifically costly story of engineering and single minded perseverance running counter to the norms of the time.

But it’s alive, it’s mine and it still makes me smile (slightly manically).

  5. If the suggestions above don’t remedy the problem consider replacing the throttle pedal sensor.

I had problems like these and eventually they disappeared when I replaced it with one from a breaker.

If these go rogue the car’s diagnostics do not report the failure/errors.

a couple of times its a jarring thump.

Is this be the suspension hitting the bump stops?  Or does it feel like the chassis is hitting the road?  What impact witnessing is there underneath the car?

Just been out and measured the front ~330mm. The recommended minimum is 325mm so not far off..

Is the "recommended minimum" from the wheel's centre?  Or from the top of the wheel centre as I suggested? My suggestion is based on that being an easy dimension to measure for forum comparisons.  If the "recommended minimum" is from the wheel centre then you've probably already settled at the lower limit.

I'm using this as a good indicator I can lift the car by 10-15mm

By all means lift the car but make sure you retain whatever chassis rake currently exists.  Rake (as you probably know) plays an important part in chassis balance, turn in and braking performance/response.

A consequence is the ride height is reduced and scrapes the road a few times.

Which parts of the underside are scraping?

Some bits are wear items (underbody aero for example) and other parts less so - sump as a for instance.

I ran my 986 at -30 for a number of years and just replaced the underbody plastics as required. No worries.

What prior experience did the folk installing these coilovers have?

To get the best from comparative ride heights we should know the distance from top of the wheel centre to the wheel arch. This data isn't affected by tyre choice/ pressures, wheel design or size - it is also less susceptible to variances caused by the car being measured on an uneven surface.

will do - only had it once on 8 journeys after the new exhaust - hopefully was an aberration but will feedback here.

I think this error code is cumulative - so it needs to happen a number of times/for a % of engine runtime before it triggers a CEL.  If that is the case it's quite possible you'll see the CEL and this error code again.

And , incidently, CAN i remove the alarm siren and still use the car, as i want to change battery

    Car battery or Siren battery?

If it’s the car car battery then there will be a maintenance setting for the car that allows you to swap the car’s 12v battery without being left with a slew of warning lights to work through.

Don’t know about 981 but someone will know the answer.

£1500 for a 911? I'm not sure I'd want to pay that much for one ....

Take those part numbers and check with your local OPC - having just been through this loop for my 986 I can assure you that Porsche UK are likely to be the best value for these parts.

So can someone kindly tell me which Michelin I need and ones which ensure I still keep my warranty. I have 20 inch wheels and want to order new tyres front and back. They have given me 20K miles and still have 2k left on them (Pirelli’s)

If you are referring to a Porsche provided warranty then I would recommend you ask an Official Porsche Centre to tell you what's acceptable for your car.

Ask them for a detailed quote and take the tyre info on that to the web or your local tyre place to find the market price for warranty compatible tyres for your specific car.

In the past OPCs have been known to price match on tyres....

That's great, thank you.  It's quite a good price too 👍

It’s worth having a search for similar vinyls - this was the first I found and I know the early Porsche cognoscenti have strong views on which is best. I recall some mentions of Marshall Amp “Elephant Hide” vinyl being considered a good option.

I lost my pop up garage and cover in one night!   Bit of a shock when I went to go to work this morning, I thought, oh no, the covers blown off the car, hang on, wheres the feking garage!

Now to find a new car cover, I am not a happy person today.

Hopefully no damage other than the loss of your cover and garage 👍

received the above vinyl, but to be honest in the flesh it's not as I had hoped.  I've ordered some other with a better pattern and foam backed which should be a bit more tactical.

If your replacement vinyl doesn't suit a number of the early 911 guys use something like this:

It may not be what you’re looking for but I thought it might be useful.

Very good and interesting info, thank you.

Do you know what is the spring values on your setup front and rear lb/in OR kg/mm?

I have 2011 Boxster that I do track a lot, but drive on street as well and am looking for a spring strenght to select for a new set of coilovers to be installed over the winther.

This guy - long since left the forum and UK did some research on 987 suspension - I can’t comment on the outcome, never saw the car, but it might be useful.

Link below takes you directly to the relevant part of his thread:
