Mattman42
Just now, Bleedsoff said: Couldn’t afford it 🙄😔 sorry - my tongue was very much in my cheek - good news you bought from a reputable dealer though and they will fix it. Depending on how you feel, perhaps get an inspection done on the car afterwards to make sure its got a clean bill of health ?
Ninesomething
See to my way of thinking even if they fix it has some invisible part been subjected to increased wear/stress which will lead it to fail down the line possibly in a costly way? Dunno, neither do you, neither do they, etc etc. Spose it depends on the cause. If its a sensor then no worries. I guess.
Scubaregs
Horrible end to what should have been a fantastic day. I'd need a lot of reassurance before keeping the car.
PaulQ
Difficult one to call. At what point, or mileage into ownership would you consider a fault serious enough to reject the car, and to what level could that fault be.?
Philc
....and how good is the warranty?
Bleedsoff
Well its a difficult one. My confidence is the car has zapped, and I have told them this. I paid good money for this car as I went to a reputable dealership. I am giving them the benefit of the doubt for the moment as they said to me on the phone they will not give me the car back unless they are 100% happy with it. Nothing is going to happen till at least Monday so we will see. Warranty is 12 months however after 3 its engine and gearbox only up to a certain limit. moneypit
I think I'd wait and see if the problem is 3.4 specific. If so, I'd back out and look for a 3.2. I wouldn't want the potential bills or aggro that come with the start of a known 3.4 problem, and it'll really sour the ongoing ownership experience if it's your first Porsche. I know you have a warranty, but they won't pay for everything. Regardless of all of the above, best of luck with it, I really feel for you in that situation. Bleedsoff
Is the 3.2 more bullet proof then the 3.4? I thought 3.2 weakness was the IMS and 3.4 was the bore scoring. As the main gremlins and even that it’s a small percentage. I had the car bore scoped before purchase. But yea I’m no expert far from it.
minimoog
Sorry you've got off to such a stressful start, must be gutting. Fingers crossed it's something relatively trivial that can be put to bed quickly and you can get on and enjoy it. But if there's any doubt I'd exercise your right to reject, if possible. Best of luck.
Greyanglia
Really sorry to hear this and hope the problem has a happy ending soon. Nowhere near as bad but I bought my first Boxter (987.1 2.7) a couple of weeks ago. Three and a half hour drive to pick it up from the dealer and left him with the roof down and the sun shining. Just over an hour of bombing down the A1 I pulled off and put the roof up and a few minutes later realised I I had no air con. Rang the dealer who was not as helpful as I expected and said it was too late to come back as it was nearly 4pm. I spent a night convincing myself I’d bought an absolute lemon but fortunately next day took it to a local very helpful Halfords Service Centre (words I never thought I’d write) who re-gassed it, checked the system thoroughly and thankfully mall fine now. I’ve since taken to a Porsche specialist for an assessment and they pronounced It a good ‘un. I’ve had a ball in it the last couple of weeks in the good weather and really hope you can do the same. It’s not a silver 58 reg is it as I saw one or two iffy cars before buying?

Well, there's been years of conjecture about this, but the 3.2 chassis numbers from mid 2005 would indicate that from that point they have the bigger bearing and therefore no more likely to grenade due to IMS failure than any 3.4. The 3.2 is not known to bore score. Therefore, logically it would follow that a mid 2005 onward 3.2 is a safer bet. I'll be back for a slice of humble pie if and when my 3.2 lets go......... DaveEFI
IMHO, s**t happens on every car at some point. And used cars often seem to give problems not long after buying - perhaps sitting around in a showroom and not being used, or whatever. If it's something that gives a warning, it should also be simple enough to fix.

Mine was first registered July 2005 and has a later engine number.
Boxob
All cars breakdown potentially at anytime. Sad yours was an hour into ownership but I can beat that. I took delivery of a brand new ranging topping Renault Espace back in 2001. It was delivered to my London office and I drove it home that evening. Only got as far as Waterloo Bridge, 5 minutes from the office, before it broke down and went into limp mode. Limped the remaining 20 miles home and delivered it next day to the local Renault garage. Mechanic opened the bonnet reconnected a pipe or wire and all sorted. Took 10 minutes. Hope your issue is just as simple. As for subsequently confidence in the car? Well I had the Renault for 17 years. It took us all over Europe and the UK and was a fantastic purchase which I never regretted. Keep the faith.
