A Possible 3rd party warranty

This conversation rekindled my thoughts about my Motoreasy policy, knowing that PDK boxes are virtually a throwaway item if it goes wrong, or develops an oil leak , so I specifically asked if the box is covered for replacement if an oil leak occurs, and have an e mail saying it is so a bit happier now,

Indeed and I just got an email saying that even on my plan b cover they will pay 1k per claim towards new engine mounts.

That means the only item not covered is the exhaust actuators. Mine lives in a garage so that’s the least of my concerns with the known issues.

Going to call them now, clarify my points in an e-mail then likely I’ll take out the policy.

One think that worries my and I’ll try to clarify is if the sensors in the pdk are covered as they seem to be the biggies issues.  Not mechanical. Looking the warranty they don’t seem to be.

Gearboxes
(including automated manual gearboxes, automatic gearboxes, four wheel drive
transfer gearboxes, hybrid transaxles, manual gearboxes and transaxles).
The following components are covered: Automatic transmission brake bands &
clutches & modulator valves, drive chains, gearlever, gears, hydraulic gear-shift
governors & internal servos & valve blocks, internal bearings & bushes, oil pumps,
selector forks, shafts (all, including extension shafts), synchromesh hubs and rings

This is probably due to the level of cover - I know Plan A covers all gearbox components, with no exceptions, as I too checked this at the time of enquiring.

If I read correctly, you are considering Plan B, which I think is driven by the cars age when taken out but not certain. If you are set on Motoreasy, would they not entertain a Plan A on your car?

Ok. All clarified and it does indeed cover all gearbox components including sensors, it covers gear box oil leaks as mentioned earlier and I get up to 1k for engine mount failures, that’s not per claim it’s total. Paying upfront I ended up getting the policy for £822 per year. I also went for the £200 (£240 with bay) per hour labour charge and choosing a garage of my choice for any work.  Reasonable I think!

I have been looking at these as an option as well and got the following reply:

Dynamic engine mounts: The actual mount aspect would not be covered as this is considered body work. However, the electrical and hydraulic aspect would be covered for sudden failures.

So what does this mean? We know the car can still be driven if these fail, and it is typically an electrical issue, so is it covered or not?

Also, they have suggested that they cover £60/hour via their specialist I.e. the ones that tow the line and are compliant to their wishes! This makes me worry, as a local specialist is at least independent of their influence.

You read so much bad press about these warranty companies that it does make you wonder whether putting the £60 away each month into a Vanguard account might be a better route? I am torn on the idea to be honest.

I can see the value of the official route, but they want me to refurbish wheels, replace discs etc all when they don’t need doing particularly?

That's a new one I've not heard before, having wheels refurbed before OPC warranty can be put on?

At the end of the day you pays your money and takes your risk. They are all just insurance policies with different catches in them, pot luck if they will cover what you need when needed.

£60 per month away is £720 a year. Porsche Warranty is £660 a year (or cheaper per year if you go 2 or 3 years) But has extra costs to meet the requirements of the warranty and OPC servicing. But will 100% guaranteed cover the transmission mount failures.

I decided to go warranty free and within 3 months my transmission mount went. Pot luck? or punishment for not renewing my warranty? But I'm still on the positive side as I'm lucky I'm capable of changing a mount myself

If you are referring to Motoreasy then I had to get them to cover up to £1k for engine mount failures. That’s £1k total not per mount as originally they would not cover them at all.

Over on the Porsche GB forum someone has had 2 OPC’s decline an exhaust valve actuator/back box replacement under warranty. The owner is speaking Porsche U.K. to see what they say.

It’s all about the level of risk you are willing to accept. I only took out the Motoreasy policy to protect me against PDK failure which is very unlikely but I don’t want to be that unlucky bugger.
