Unfortunately the old back boxes don’t hold much value as no 981s are in a position to need their standard exhaust being replaced (due to corrosion etc) so currently value seems to be £150 ish.  Maybe in another 10 years they may gain some value.?

As stated above though, a significant part of the install (and cost) is installing the vacuum tubes, engine switch, wiring, console switch and programming etc.  All this could be left in if you put the old stuff back but you would then have an exhaust button that didn’t do anything, and yes I expect it would mean you couldn’t then extend warranty.

Looks like Ringmaster is going to have to drive around annoying his immediate neighbours for a couple of weeks!!

😂😂😢 Yes National lock down here in Wales means no driving unless essential journey 😢 What ever that means 👎

thanks Greenman and Ringmaster for the feedback.

In December the warranty and a major service are due at a cost of approx £2000. If I went to an Indy for the service probable cost £500 I could use the saving and warranty money for the sports exhaust. I like the security of the warranty, but this December 2012 car had a new engine a few years ago before I owned it and has only covered 20k miles with an overall mileage on the car of just 42k. The only big expensive worry if I opted out would be a gearbox meltdown (PDK) so is the warranty worth it? Decisions decisions

I think if I just did all of them at a cost of £4.2k I would need to add the cost of a divorce lawyer!

Hi @Ringmaster999 I was lucky got mine fitted as part of the deal on the sale from Cardiff OPC no price hack,

I didn't realise this.  "Note- PSE in quiet mode is still louder than the standard exhaust." just read that in one of the previous posts I've always thought it sounds lovely even when switched off, I had to have switchable working shifts leaving my house at 04:40 in the small streets in the Valleys didn't half echo off the houses on each side, I work in Cardiff Bay, down by the Cardiff White water complex, I'm working all through the lock downs pop in for a coffee if your ever passing this area. social distancing as ordered obviously.

Guvs.

Maybe my post.  I can confirm this is the case having had both on the same car.  It’s no surprise when you see the units as the PSE unit has a smaller overall silencer volume due to the actuator/switch paraphernalia, so even when in quiet mode there is less silencer volume in use.

I haven't experienced the standard exhaust but from the first test drive of the car I bought (2.7 with PSE) I actually found the noise quite subtle.

Still do in fact... for the normal driving... the pops and crackles are great but outside of that it seems a bit quiet unless up the rev range.  I wonder if changing the air filters next to add some more noise...

For reference I've come from a rather special S1 Elise with a Larini Club Sport exhaust so perhaps I'm just used to something more 'racey'

Yeh it’s true that in tootling Rev ranges the PSE is pretty subtle, but has a lovely roar over 4K revs.

This may be useful for those who fancy this. I’ve put some enquiries out for prices to supply and fit. I think this thread can serve two purposes. Share what the price was to supply and fit, location and when that price applied. It’s likely that prices from 2016 will have increased.
secondly, if there is sufficient interest to have the work done at a nominated OPC, I could look to see if they are interested in lowering the price further for a ‘group buy’ . I can’t see service being over busy at the beginning of next year. An opc may find the idea of 5+ orders for this something they’d like a piece of.

Post here if you are interested in getting this done or have a price/location to suggest.

That’s really useful. Anyone able to get this under £2k?

I got it under £2k but only as part of a purchase.

I assume that of you pay for this, you keep the old exhaust? Not like it’s a warranty replacement. I’d have thought a standard back box has some value?

You can keep the old one if you wish, although transporting it back in the box would be entertaining. As for value, negligible as modern standard exhausts last 10+ years by the time it's worth something yours will have rotted away too, lol

With some old blankets and a distinction on your ‘packing’ diploma you can get them on the passenger seat.

This.

You do see them on eBay but they are usually £150 or cheaper. There’s just no demand except perhaps the odd person that wants to try a Carnwell or similar.  In another 10 years they may be worth something.

I keep mine and have had it on the bay since for £100. No interest so although it’s in the shed out of my way can’t help but think it would of been better just leaving it at the dealers. 😂👍

This was discussed on another thread I started about PSE. IIRC not much in it. Someone did actually fit it DIY but trouble is the car needs to be remapped for the correct running with the PSE so it’s one that if you were serious about getting it fitted it’s probably best with the OPC

does it have to be fitted at an OPC? what about buying it from a part specialist and then getting it fitted by an indi? would it work out cheaper.....

My car has the sports tailpipe optioned. Much as I’d like this exhaust it’s not worth £2k plus to me. So far, based on this thread, we are somewhat short of enough people to make a group buy viable.
5 x people with a 981 wanting PSE roughly equal to £9k for an OPC. I think that’s something to aim for?
4 more people here willing to travel, feel the same?
