Tappet noise, cold start

Hi there - I'm looking at an '03 Boxster 2.7 for sale with a specialist (60k ish miles). Whilst I haven't yet been able to see the car in person, I was sent a video of a cold start and it was quite "tappety" sounding (admittedly disappears completely once warm). Dealer states this is normal when the car has been sitting for a week or more.

Is it? Or is there maintenance / further investigation required?

Thanks,

Will

I have tappet noise on start up and a single tappet that's then noisy for a little while whilst warming up and getting warm oil around the engine.  Not too worried, the better the oil the less the noise but still there.  Given the cost of fixing I'm happy to leave it until the engine needs to come out for another more serious reason or I sell it, neither of which I hope will be any time soon.

When did it last have an oil change? Wouldn't say it's normal but it prob just needs using. They're not known for tappet problems but if any car sits for a while it's possible.

I do 6 - 7k miles a year and mine still taps away whilst warming through.  It has been better on this fill (Sept 20) of Mobil 1 vs the Millers that was in it in 2019/20.

My car when left for several weeks will have a tappety noise on start up and will last for a few seconds, my engine has done 210k and I change my oil every 3000-5000 miles

Chances are the car has sat unused for some time, in which case tappet noise isn’t really surprising. A good drive & thorough warm through of the oil should sort it.

It could also be a blowing exhaust clamp pre-cat? Mine sounded like that and I thought tappets but it was it ended up being the clamps. 2x new cats and all sorted (they were rusty as). Be thankful it’s not a 987 as the cats are 4x as much! Hope you sort it easily and frugally!
