Strange oil leak

Hello,

Unfortunately last week after a fun hour long drive in the warm weather after a couple of hours parked up I saw a small patch of oil, not much bigger than a 50p.

It was dead centre of the car around where the engine meets the gearbox.  Instantly I am obviously thinking RMS or IMS issues.

Since then it has not leaked a drop.  I have been using the car to commute my short 5 miles to work.

Today I went for another long spirited drive and low and behold a small leak again.

So it seems to only leak when the engine is extra hot from a longer drive, and only drops the oil the once then stops.

My question is how worried should I be?

My car is a 2001 2.7 with 65,000 on the clock and immaculate service history.  There is no difference in the way it drives or the engine sounds.

Any observations or advice very much appreciated.

Ha, I know. I have always had old minis so never been concerned about a little oil now and again. But these cars are obviously another level.

I have it booked it for a major service next week with a decent Indie so will get the oil filter checked etc.

Thank you for your reply.

I can only speak from experience - don't drive car unnecessarily ! I had same oil leak on a 986 years ago ,only leaked when hot. Indie specialist took gearbox off car and ran engine for over an hour before before oil weeped out of IMS bearing - the crankshaft was moving a couple of microns North to South .

Fingers crossed it not the same problem for you .Ade

Yes only small but gradually got worse ! Sorry for bad news - it could be RMS which is not so expensive but if oil is coming from that area it’s a gearbox off job anyway .

This is how @Cheddar Bob (no longer active on here) reported finding his IMSB leak last year. Hope it isn't for your wallet's sake but if it is at least you caught it in time to save an even bigger wallet thumping bill.

Yes I can confirm thats exactly how I discovered mine. Cost about £1200 to put right from Cotswold Porsche.

Mine did this at a track day after I did the IMS bearing but not the RMS (whoops!). Did the RMS right away, I could see it was the source. Did another track day and it leaks again, going to live with it. Doesn’t matter if it’s IMS or RMS, a leak is a leak and if it’s small you have that nice dash indicator to watch the level. I don’t think a leaking IMS cover is impending doom

I've just had my IMS and RM seals replaced after the normal weep became quite a bit more significant. It was a 250 mile drive to the chosen indie and it went through about 1.5 litres on the journey, neccessitating several topups. Nerve-wracking but not an actual problem in the end. £700 all-in, including oil, filter and sump plug. IMS and clutch are both fine.
