Christopher2110
Has anyone replaced their gauge faces in the 986? The needle is off but there is a small black disc which appears to hold the face in place. It's very brittle (don't ask how I found out) 😶 and looks like it should be pinched together to remove. Ideas? Edited July 17, 2021 by Christopher2110
Christopher2110
So managed to get it off and all back together. Needle was slightly off the 0 mark with ignition on so took off again and back in the right place. Now the needle has gone floppy and just moves around on its own 😑

You can get a stepper/ pointer motor replacement which I would assume is the part that is now broken as the needle spins almost 360 and then gets some resistance but will then spin almost 360 again but in the opposite direction. But to access the motor all the other needles need to come off to remove the circuitboard from the back. So it's back on the car for now until I pluck up the courage! Until then I have a very cool looking broken gauge! Hopefully someone else is able to suggest something to try in the meantime 🤞

Although I haven’t rang them yet, but like normal it’s just a standard part across VW
iborguk
Don't know if any good, see 986 listed. https://store.minitools.com/en/sei-mot10-b-stepper-motor-for-mercedes-porsche-ruf-smart-dashboards-clockwise.html

Sourcing the correct salvage cluster is tricky and a new on for just this would be wallet cringing but 15% off parts for Porsche Classic Register members if the OPC fits !! Hope it doesn't come to that.
Christopher2110
Thanks @iborguk👍🏼 will drop them an email. On 7/18/2021 at 10:34 AM, ½cwt said: Good luck and I hope it works out. Not sure how they justify it

½cwt
I recall them using an outfit amusingly called ClusterFix in Coventry IIRC. Can't find them now but did find these: The Instrument Cluster Repair Specialist, Cluster Repairs UK Speedo Repair | Instrument Cluster Repair | Dashpod Repair | Cartronix

Christopher2110
@charlieboy2608 @½cwt Just called them both.... First link - from £169 Second link - from £350! I did have to confirm with this one if I was getting a spanking new one from an OPC, but no, they just repair the fault. Might be rewatching Wheeler Dealers at this rate to find out who they use... 😆

CarlM
I’ve stripped one of these clusters and taking the PCB’s apart isn’t as bad as getting the dial faces off in my opinion. If it’s the little motor you are after I’ve got one from an 04 cluster, (green, blue & grey plugs) I can let you have.
Sanky
If you are swapping the dial faces anyway, you could use a 2.7 cluster as long as its the correct one. I can't see there been any differences in the stepper motors and all the Cal values that make it an S will be on the PCB with eeprom which you won't be changing. On a different subject, where did you get the yellow face from? I am looking for some replacement gauge faces for my 996 cluster swap, want the Oil and Volt gauge faces in the Boxster font. If you would be willing to let it go I don’t mind paying obviously! 😁👍🏼 That’s a very good point @Sanky They’re considerably cheaper too. Let me dig out the link to the place I got it from when I get home tonight and I’ll let you know. They were great to deal with Thanks @Bigfatfish that seems like the going rate for a used unit too Edited December 10, 2021 by Christopher2110
Sanky
These videos might help removing the needles. and this one, even though it’s for a TT but a good tip using teaspoons to get the needles off

ATM
There was a guy on here with a massive long build thread who lived in Wales. He did the dial faces on his. Was he named after some famous cyclist? Geriant Thomas?
