Battery dead / replacement

Angus76

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’ve not driven the car for a few days and the battery is not turning the engine. I can unlock etc.

Multi meter shows 11.53v so I think it’s life is over!

Could anyone recommend a replacement battery?

I dont think there’s a special procedure is there in changing it? Other than windows up and down afterwards? And drive for steering angle sensor etc..

Will the alarm go off?

Thanks very much 👍

Ours was in the same boat, I fitted this one yesterday, no issues, psm failure light went away after about 20 feet driving.

I don’t know what price it reads without being signed in but it was £93.50 with a trade card

Turn the ignition on (don't start the engine), and off, but don't remove the key.

This will stop the alarm going off when you disconnect the old battery. Negative lead off first, then positive. When the new battery's in positive on first, then negative.

Thanks very much for the replies.

Am I best going for an 800Amps (CCA) and nothing less? If I remember correctly the car currently has a 640.

640a is too small for a 6 cyl lump imo, I wanted maximum cranking power for cold weather so fitted that 85ah 800A one above, it’s quite a bit longer than the one that came out but easily fits

Just buy a 096 / 110 fitment with the best specs that suit your budget from Bosch / Varta / Yuasa / Exide. You can't really go wrong.

Going for this tomorrow just want it sorted same day. I’ll nudge the bracket along to secure it. https://www.halfords.com/motoring/batteries/car-batteries/yuasa-hsb110-silver-12v-car-battery-5-year-guarantee-281464.html

Had one in my 986 for 2½ years now, no issues and good strong cranking but then I'd hope so if it has a 5 year guarantee....

A simple voltage check does not show the condition of the battery. It needs to be tested under high current load. The voltage difference between the battery no load and with everything switched on - main beam, heater etc, may give a better clue. But charge the battery first. If the car then starts, take it to a battery specialist and ask them to test it using specialist equipment.

Well... I got Halfords to price match Tayna so £40 off!

My current battery has what looks like a drain straw poking out of it. I don’t think the Yuasa one does? I can see a red bung to the right hand side.

Absolutely, I’m going to do a load test etc. to check the alternator etc.  I think the previous battery was perhaps a bit weedy for the job anyway. 👍

That is a vent. It should have plastic tube connected to it, and run to the outside, clear of bodywork.

I’ve a drain tube on the current battery, is it a case of swop over? This is what the new battery has in the same place. But no tube protruding.

Yes swap the vent plug/elbow from the old battery and plug it into the tube.

Removes potentially harmful hydrogen gas from the frunk.

Do I need to pull the red grommet above out? Or plug the old pipe in?

Sorry for all the questions on this bit! (Never encountered vent tubes before!)

My other car is a 3.5 litre V8. Standard battery for that is  a 70 amp hour with 630 CCA. A larger battery than needed is simply adding weight and costs. I'd go for the maker's one recommended for your model. To get best battery life, just make sure it doesn't get heavily discharged. As can happen on a little used car, if you don't use an external charger. A larger battery may, of course, give you few more days before this happens. But if being left unused for more than 3 weeks or so either disconnect the battery or use an external charger.

Does the old battery vent pipe elbow fit the black hole shown on the top left handsome shown in this photo ?

That must be an old pic and they changed the location of it, the one I got has a red plug each side as you can just about see from my pic above and the oe vent pipe and elbow fit it

This is what I’ve done.

Left hand side (negative) had a hole.

So I’ve plugged in the vent elbow to the left.

Right hand side has a red plug that’s very firmly in place. Am I ok to leave it in. Surely just one vent required?
