Where did you get the seat unit?  Did you figure out why the bike wasn't running? Guzzis can be temperamental but they don't often break catastrophically....

This Guzzi stopped in running condition 11 years ago as the owner went to old to ride it, hopefully the engine is not to bad conditions, an other good thing is that Guzzi parts not very expensive.

I have some more bikes waiting some drastic changes (but without any more budget limit then what my wallet can support…)

1. Guzzi California 1000 to make something fun of.

2. Ducati ST4S to make a 888 replica, I bought the bike in Madrid last week just by photo and sent it to friends work shop (one of the CafeRacer group) for a small overhaul, as the idea is taking a flight to Madrid to pickup the bike, drive it down to Huelva, from there I take the ferry to Gran Canaria..

3 Ducati 900SS 1976 to make a classic look racer of.

At this moment I’m respraying a modern R6 who belongs to a Scottish friend.

In other word I keep my self busy!

I keep wondering if I should get a 900SS for fun but in the UK prices have gone stratospheric. Should've got one before lock down.

The classic 900SS doesn’t go cheap no where this days….

I have some classic bikes and in my mid is making a Italian Poker:

Guzzi Lemans (I have this one)

Ducati 900SS (I have this one)

Benelli 900 sei (I haven’t this one)

Laverda 750SFC replica racer, I haven’t this, just a 1000 Jota

As I’m not a rich man, I will sell some bikes who I not interested in to finance my little Italian suite…

  • 6 months later...

Well things happen and all isn't good!

Good news first:

I finished the car and had a beautiful trip with my mother at local mountain roads.

The bad news:

Next day I was driving with my wife at a sunny coast road at 2500rpm in 6 gear, suddenly POFF, the engine just seized.

I haven't pull out the engine from the car to see what it is, But now it have a new engine ventilation in the upper part of the engine case...

I have bought another engine who will arrive during this month..............

That's not good.  Seized big end or dropped valve leading to con rod breakage by the sound of it.  Expensive either way...  Second rebuild should be quicker as you've learned all the tricky bits first time.

Good Luck!

Oh dear, my commiserations. It's been a few months since the engine rebuild. How many miles did you do before the recent failure?

Buying a good used lump will hopefully be a good shout. There is always at least some risk, but this way you don't have to undo it and can just fit the engine as a whole.

If the used lump passes the boreoscope and 'bits in the oil filter' tests whilst still on the pallet it could be a goer, and you could just do the IMS if accessible. If it's a later engine with inaccessible IMS then maybe just leave it in there!

On the basis of this, here's the engine number range that has the smaller easy to change IMSB:

That is very bad news, could someone on here enlighten me as to where that piece of metal has liberated itself from? With the cross hatch pattern it looks like back of the block?

If the bearing is clean, transfer it to the new one....

Sorry to go back to the bikes, but as an owner of 3 Ducatis (including a new black / gold 900SS in 1979), you have set me thinking again about a project I had in mind for my 750SSie sitting doing sod all.

Absolutely loved the Jota, two friends had Mirages (one is now a cafe racer of sorts), nearly bought a Le Mans on several occasions but never pulled the trigger. Also loved the Montjuic, I can remember the Superbike write up which showed a man removing his brain before going out to ride it.

Anyway, good luck with the Porsche, I am envious of your cafe racer building abilities and you climate!

Apologies again for high jacking the thread.

Nice, I think they make great cafe racers, light, good handling, not too powerful but fun.

You’re right, great handling at twisty roads using the “Ducati torque” and listening to the V2 symphony at local mountain roads. I’m a bit impatient to finishing another nice little Ducati this days, My idea is driving around Portugal this summer with it.

Just hijacking my own tread with more bike stuff.....

I bought Ducati ST4s in Madrid having in mind making another cafe racer, but during the journey from Madrid to Sevilla I realised how good and comfortable the bike is, Back to my island I used it to go to work as daily driver and it's fantastic, with space for laptop and EPI for when I'm around at local harbour making helideck inspection at the rigs and vessels.

So I decided keep is as it is but giving it a new look and a good maintenance.

Lower fairing was missing, broken mirrors and a general shaggy look.

I painted the wheels in same colour as at the 987..
