Stuno1
Hi folks, are the maps for a 2013 981 on a disc or usb? Also, what’s the rough cost? Thinking about updating them. Edited December 26, 2021 by Stuno1
Lonewolfgjp
I’m considering the same but if you haven’t got the full postcode search it needs a factory firmware update before the map update. There maybe a work around but I’m not sure 🤔
Stuno1
Ah ok. Thankfully I do have the full post code search. Do you know the latest map dates?
bandit_287
I think the only way this can be done is a visit to the OPC, it costs about £300 and takes about four hours or so to update. I personally wouldn’t bother, I hardly ever use the sat nav in mine, Google maps is far better. Greenman
As far as I know the latest maps are from 2018 and a new update is somewhat overdue (normally about every 2 years). There are a number of people on here that have used an eBay user called Lucas ( can’t remember his I’d -I’ll have a search). There is a thread on here from a couple of years ago covering the process. You have to send him your car details and he sends back a usb coded to your specific car, cost was around £100 so somewhat more reasonable than the OPC. As said though I’d be tempted to wait for a more recent update.

Paul P
1 minute ago, Stuno1 said: Will they still produce the latest maps for the older cars? The “current” set of maps are available for pcm3 and 3.1 So 987.2 and 981 in our world. Those maps came out post the 718 being around So, up till now they have been available for older cars. maps aside the built in nav is a bit average. I have it, with the latest available maps, and it’s OK, the routing is sometimes a bit odd (taking you off a motorway exit to go across a roundabout to then rejoin the motorway for example). Unless there’s an update to the software (which we haven’t had for a few years) then I think they will stay at “ok” It’s probably the live traffic info that is there weak point these days Mine (987.2) has tmc traffic but it’s nowhere near as clever as google maps etc for 100 quid I would probably update the maps if / when new ones come out but not sure I would do it for 300-400 via the official route
Greenman
I’ve used the Porsche SatNav pretty extensively the past few years and generally it’s fine. I don’t use google maps so maybe it doesn’t live up to the latest set of features. Setting up waypoints or complex routes is somewhat clunky, and as above traffic info integration is limited. However I find the mapping much better than Garmin (which I also use extensively). I certainly wouldn’t be paying OPC £300+ for 2018 maps, but if a new version comes out I’ll update if possible (hopefully via Nav-expert or similar)
Stuart21UK
my money would be on a proper Brodit phone mount for < £100 and free Google maps, Waze or similar ( I haven't used PCM for a long time now)
Desiro
If I was going to spend some money, Android auto / Apple carplay would be the answer and play google maps, waze or whatever apple use throught the hrad unit.
Richard Hamilton
I hear there will be a new PCM3.x map update coming out in January. AFAIK it will just be a map data update though.
Menoporsche
On my 2.1 the address input by constantly turning the knob is a pain. Add that I live near a city, so live traffic rerouting is useful, and my PCM is never used; Google maps all the time. (Plus you don’t have to identify the district of the city to find the address, which is a real pain in PCM)
GTSMarky
You need the patience of a saint to use the PCM Nav. As said above, invest in a decent mount for your phone's google maps or have the car play hardware/software kit installed.
Stuno1
I quite like an integrated sat nav. I swap between them and my phone. I’ll wait for a map update and think again then. Also with it being full postcode and touch screen I find it easy to use.
Desiro
The only reason I haven't gone for the Android Auto mod, is that multiple way-points for road trips are not available in google/waze. If https://www.myrouteapp.com/routelab get their act together, then I'm in. As @daz05shows in his video, contolling navigation, music and messages is an absolute breeze using Android Auto (which is essentially a mirror of your phone) https://youtu.be/d_OiB6B7GlU

T24RES
@Desiro this! If you are planning on keeping the car I would suggest upgrading to joyeauto or similar. The system is active dated, a bit like hanging on to an old Nokia phone. Or upgrade the head unit. Use the car, enjoy and refit when you sell. The newer pcm3's can have car play retro fitted even by the opc, apparently. Just my 2c worth
daz05
It won't be too long until we see PCM4s in this generation of car they are the MIB2 units VW uses and there is a huge community which specialises in retrofitting them. iborguk
Just skimmed that thread, looks like a retrofit of PCM 4.0 for the 9x1 is only for the hardcore , some smart cookies playing there mind...
daz05
The issue is that Porsche coders are few and far between and we need that expertise to make everything come together. @DesiroIs it latest tech? Well no, we are onto PCM Gen 5 now. Joyeauto or better still Isudar on the PCM 3.1 is still good enough.
iborguk
I put up with my PCM 3.0 due to a) warranty and b) the (limited) integration it has. If I wasn't under the warranty rules I'd probably have gone third-party (and kept the original). PCCM Plus may appear at some point for the 981 (slated to appear in 987 in 2022) but obviously it will be ££££...😱
