Looking at a 981 S…

Recommended Posts

Hi Moonshine. Im a new owner of a 981S & new to this forum, so i feel for you.

I looked for about 4 momths before buying my car. I definately wanted to buy from the trade as i had a part ex - non Porsche. Also, i think some sort of warranty is essential.

If you buy privately, you are on your own, with no comeback. However you will save some money on the purchase price. If you do this you MUST have the car inspected, either by a (non franchised) Porsche specialist, or an OPC. If you talk to the owner, he should tell you who has serviced his car. An email or phone call to them could save you alot of aggro.

If you buy from an OPC 2 years Porsche warranty will be included in the price, thats about £1700. The car will have been inspected & new tyres will be fitted if necessary.

If you buy from a specialist performance car dealer you will normally get either 3 months or 6 months warranty. This will be `bought in` by the dealer & non specific to Porsche, and can usually be extended at a cost. The car will cheaper than an OPC - maybe 10%. It all depends on the cars history & service records. Previous posts have covered having the car inspected by on OPC. I dont know if its worth bringing a car back into the OPC system.

You could do alot worse than contacting the various non franchised specialists & asking if they know of any customers wanting to sell their cars.

Pick your colour & options, look out for cars in your price bracket & be prepared to act quicly. They dont hang around long. I missed out on 2

Good luck

If I were dropping that kind of cash on a car I’d want a Porsche warranty on it. Converting to their warranty is all doable under the right rules (an OPC must have serviced it last , pass the 111 point check and you have to have owned it for at least three months).

I converted to a Porsche warranty on my 987.2 backend of 2020 and I’m happy to share the journey to that with the OP if they want to PM me.

Thanks everyone for comments and replies…

im going to pass on that one for the moment…. Plenty other fish in the sea….. i think i would be happier with a Warranty at that (or > value)  - it is possibly something i could have achieved on that car, but it is a lot of extra work at arms length , as is arranging a PPI. I’m in no rush… so i can tee up the funds etc to be able to move quickly when the right one comes along

I’ll keep an eye on various sites  / OPC etc for a spec that works…

Looking for an S… (718 or 981), <20Kish miles

ideal spec would be

pref. red in colour , blue  or grey … silver white and yellow least favourite - (definitely not Black) -

Must have: PDK, Sports Chrono, Paddles, Bose, folding mirrors & Cruise, F&R park assist

nice to have: PASM, LSD,  LEDs, PSE

I would reconsider PSE. It sounds incredible and to retrofit it or buy an aftermarket option with valves is upwards of £2.5k.

@Menoporschewill tell you it's not "proper orange" as it's lava orange but I quite like the look of that myself.

A bit harsh. Porsche do various versions of orange. I like mine but am not a fan of Lava Orange which is nearly red or Zanzibar Red which is nearly orange (!) but I wouldn't say that one or the other is proper.

After all I don't drive a proper Porsche :)

Several of us here will tell you a Boxster wears a bold colour very well. Many have been apprehensive about getting such a colour, and then only get compliments after, from random people not just car nuts. Though some car nuts on here can be pretty random too. Don't be afraid to get something like that (as long as you like the colour, obviously).

Carmine isn't "bold" like orange, yellow, viper green, Riviera blue, but is a really pretty colour in itself.

That is lovely!

How big an issue is the absence of Bose? What is the standard hifi like?

I don't own a 718 but have driven a couple and I find the sound scape OK but I'll say I haven't got the most hi-fi ears.

Can only suggest get yourself in the seat of one and try the whole exprience out.

I loved the low end torque and the Subaru engine sound didn't bother me after being in it for 10 mins.

From the research I did bose makes a notable difference. I like it in my cayman and liked it in my other Mazda equipped cars. I like music. It may not be the best but by all accounts better than the standard system as you would expect.

Can't say how much of an issue it is as that's up to you but having had a 981 with a standards sound system and now a 981S with the BOSE it is far superior in sound. But I guess if you end up with the 4 pot you wouldn't have the engine sound of the f6 to compete with as the 4 pot is quieter/subdued especially compared to the f6 with PSE, if you go for that you wont care how good the sound system is :)

I'm compelled to reply to stop you buying a car with park assist and folding mirrors over and above PSE and PASM, that's honestly a little bit crazy.

Bose is better than SPP and very nice to have but it's not amazing, you can upgrade sound package plus quite easily.

My faves in my car are the PSE, leather dash, heated seat sport seat plus, PASM mostly because it rides nicely and for the lowered ride height, and the paddles on the wheel. Sport Chrono isn't anything to write home about.

+1 my thoughts exactly, I was going to post the same reply but Daz saved me the effort.

I would personally have a proper think about what you are using the car for, if it is a daily or a weekend toy or both as the options you are ideally after will vary depending.

I’ve had a few Boxsters with various options, so I know what I like and what isn’t worth it.

As a new buyer you have to weigh up the options that suit your style of motoring.

We will all give you our opinions and try to help but all of us on here have got different views on different options 👍

I do agree you need to move quickly if you find the right car but the important bit is knowing exactly what your after so you can pull the trigger as and when 😉

I disagree with Daz about the sports chrono as it improves the speed of the gears but equally just the sports button may do the same but without the stopwatch that none of us use.

The exhaust is a absolute must, totally changes the driving experience. Mine had everything I wanted except the exhaust but it was the right car at the right price and I was happy to retro fit it at the additional £2300.

Happy hunting 👍

@Lonewolfgjp Yes sport mode in a car without SC has the same effect in terms of throttle response and gear change speed. I find sports plus to be overly aggressive but that's down to the driver. The other differential is the adaptive transmission mounts, I'm not sure if they actually improve the experience when you are on it or if they soften things when you off the boil.

Of course if they short out, outside the warranty period you'll certainly wish you didn't have them.

Not sure of the origins of this graphic I found on Planet-9 but it matches my discussions with the OPC and other sources and my feel in the car. 3 different levels of throttle "response" and 3 different levels (and mappings) for the pdk changes. The changes in Sports+ are much faster than in Sports, which is faster than in normal.

Also in Sports and Sports+ there are different levels of PSM applied, so in sports you get a bit more slip before it kicks in to save you and more in sports+

I have sports+ because the car came with it. It wasn't a requirement but if I tracked the car it would be. But I don't have PASM either as I find the normal suspension perfectly fine.

And yes the mounts are fkin expensive outside of warranty having just replaced one and now sat waiting for the other to go :)
