well as its been mentioned earlier, the reason i am questioning (not just you) is that from the thread, there are lost of people spending money that is sometimes just for the sake of it

To keep these cars looking and running as hey should you need to spend the money

  2. I think my next one will be a cayman I hope I don't spend 8k on it in costs but hey ho I prob will. My car is also like my hobby if that sounds sad, I spent hrs in the better weather on the bodywork I do enjoy machine polishing and applying coatings 😁

Yes mate it is a 986 I have done the following: All new suspension. new coils, plugs. MAF meter, water pump, IMS bearing, new clutch, all the brakes done discs pads. wheels refurbed, serpentine belt,  new thermostat, new lambda sensors  X2.  2 new drive shafts genuine Porsche parts very expensive. rear wheel bearings. Exhaust work just the bolts all corroded. coffin arms, drop links, oil changes, filter changes, new tyres,  Most of these parts were going to fail sooner or later hence the planned maintenance.  new coolant,  all the above done over a period of 4 years.

    Regards   Pete

I've spent just over £10 Grand in 4 years not because things failed I just wanted to keep it in good nick, it's 20 years old in May with 58000 miles on the clock, no they are not cheap to keep in good condition and hopefully I will now just spending on oil changes etc . I paid just over £6 grand for the car and I knew I would be spending money on it. I also think that if your intention is to keep the car long term and you have spare cash why not spend it on your pride and joy. I always keep a small kitty set aside just in case it's needed I hope it's not.

What have you had done mate is it a 986

    Mat1,

We're getting WAY off topic here but I think Terry Smith's approach is predominantly defensive so I suspect he will do well in a bear market. However opinions on this will differ and the debate will rage for a long time to come!

Now, back to 987's. Are we all agreed that the Cayman is better than the Boxster? Good, I thought so.... :)

    Lol

ive had 2 in the past, so too late  - lol - OK, so from the £4k, then probably £2k necessary for the clutch & coolant hoses

the point I'm trying to make is that there is a BIG difference in 'running costs' as opposed to 'total spend'

Depends if you want a immaculate car I suppose mate

well there you go - the car hasn't cost you THAT much - you have chosen to replace items like clutch, coolant pipes etc

not real running costs in reality

I'm afraid your wrong mate my clutch and flywheel were both goosed, plus my coolant pipes were corroded, if I were you mate I'd have a think about getting a porsche you may be surprised at the Maintenance costs.

yes, but how much of that was actually necessary?

None really but my bumpers were chipped alot plus I want eibach pro springs fitted so I thought while it's getting striped I would replace the dampers and any other worn items

A lot of money, but of that lot how much was essential expenditure and how much was 'improvements' or 'renovation'?

I wonder how much it would be if you had not done the things highlighted on the list above, or chosen a cheaper brand of shock absorber than Bilstein perhaps?

There is nothing wrong with a desire to improve your P&J but I'm not sure you can claim that it is all essential expenditure.

    Prob about 4k mate lol

This thread is underlining a key component when it comes to used performance car ownership.

The purchase price alone is no indication regarding the ongoing affordability - as a matter of fact, it can sometimes have the opposite effect as the market is kept fluid by owners biting off more than they can chew and eventually wanting out (you can pick up a 10yr old Maserati Grandturismo for £17k now and I'm sure it's for the reason that they're evil unrelenting money-pits, but by christ, they're beautiful cars)

In my experience, you have to go back to the original purchase price and think 'what will it take to maintain a car that cost £40-60k, and can still offer its performance and luxury qualities over 10 years later'.

So true this, porsche are not cheap cars to run but I simply love mine and the community etc, I'd hate to not own one.

it may just be me, but as a prospective 987 buyer (previous had a 996 & 3.2 carrera),  £17k in 14 years doesn't fill me with confidence

Well mate I'm afraid that's how much these cars cost to maintain over the years, mines been serviced every after year for the first 3 years of its life so that will add a few pounds to it compared to one that been serviced every 2 years.

You should see the bull on a old 911, my mates 2003 911 996 had service history and maintenance well over 22k

Don't get me wrong alot of the items I have spent money on didn't need doing really ie breakdowns etc but I like to replace before they do. I also want the best car I can have so everything has to be perfect
