  1. Hi McDonald, cost was £370 (non registered for VAT). Guy trying to build up his business right out in the sticks north of Llanelli but less than an hour from me. Did a brilliant job with all covers off, including wheel arches and engine vents. He was so pleased to have been working on such a brilliantly engineered car (his words) I thought he was going to pay me😀.

Would you also like a short course on how to suck eggs🤣

Have a good drive out, I would, but nursing a hangover🙁

😆 A good fry up and you’ll be just fine.

It sounds similar to an overpayment scam, but in reverse. In your case, it’s the seller’s who’s put themselves at risk by giving you an undocumented £400. In theory, if you found a legitimate reason to return the car for a refund, they would be obliged to give you the full £16k and a court would back you up as that is what the paper trail would say.

Often, people trying to complicate transactions are looking to scam you.

    Overpayment scam

A customer attempts to overpay for an item or an order and asks you to wire them the difference. They may be using a stolen credit card or account to pay you, and if the legitimate account holder reports unauthorized activity, that money can be withdrawn from your account. Learn more and beware of overpayment scams.

Hi Nobbie, I’m a long retired tax inspector who cut his teeth investigating lowly subbies trying to tell me they never did cash jobs progressing onto high net worth individuals and company bosses trying to defend their tax avoidance schemes. So, although not infallible, I think I am well placed to spot a dodgy geezer trying to sell me a car. The seller was a genuine guy who was trying to hide from his wife how much he was losing on his short term car ownership policy. Anyway, let’s all enjoy our cars and chatting about them. Sun is shining here and the roof will be down very shortly😀.

As long as the car is good, that's all that matters. Enjoy your new wheels and post details and pics when you can.

Imho, buying privately these days it's not much different to buying from a dealer. Unless you are buying from the big dealers, there's not really much benefit as the off the shelf warranties mean nothing. Buy the car not the seller.

For me, the hunt is the best part, I too usually get bored soon after.

The additional cash is a bit odd though I must admit, although I wouldn't turn it down.

Thanks Mattman. To be clear, it wasn’t additional cash it simply inflated the sale price to make it look like he had sold it for £16k instead of the £15,600 it actually cost me. I know who wears the trousers in his house……😀

  5. Sold my 987.1 last November and looked for a 987.2 2.9 for 3 months. I’m retired so lucky enough to have the time to search extensively. I looked at dealers and private ads (BoXa.net, Piston Heads, Autotrader and Facebook) and having owned a few of these cars felt confident enough not to be afraid of a private purchase. There is loads of information out there, plenty on this site, so if you list everything and check off your list diligently against each car you cut down your chances of being sold a pup. That doesn’t just apply to buying privately though with many dealers buying at auction with little paper work to check. However, like many things in life if it goes wrong you have to be in a position to put it down to experience which isn’t easy if money is tight. I think there is also the fun and sense of achievement when you get what you want after a bit of good natured cut and thrust with a seller. Which is what prompted me to write this. I made loads of enquiries on line and by phone and ended up looking seriously at 4 cars in Cardiff (close to me), Plymouth, Rugby and Ipswich. Couple of nights away with SWMBO so everyone was happy. Ended up buying the third car I looked at in Rugby and drove it back today. The seller was a character who I didn’t really take to at first when we spoke on the phone but I really warmed to him after a bit of face to face banter. He cherishes his cars but gets bored after a couple of years and enjoys the search and buying process for the next one. He picked me up at the station after my long journey and on the way to his house said he would appreciate it if he could give me 400 quid in cash from his private stash and add a similar amount to the agreed price for the car! The higher bank transfer would indicate to his wife that his car dealing was not quite the loss making process she believed😀. Had a text from him earlier asking if I got home ok and wishing me well.
I don’t know anywhere near as much about cars as many who contribute here but I hope this inspires one or two who are fearful of the private purchase process to give it a go.

    good man! :)

I got the best results with this kit - it was a pain to mix the colour match for a red leather, but for black, it was a lot easier

Thanks Mattman42, will give it a go if I buy the car. Saw it today as it happens and it is a small flap or 2 sides of a square about 1cm across on the outside of the bolster on the drivers seat. Great car but I am looking at another next week before I decide.

  7. Mattman42 - will negotiate a reduction and try to do it myself 😀.

Red Rocket - don’t know exactly where it is yet but doesn’t sound as if it’s along stitch line. If I decide to buy will give it a go myself and bring in a pro if I c*ck it up!

  8. Going to look at a 2.9 on Thursday. Spoke to seller earlier to discuss the details that sometimes don’t show up in the advert or photos. There is a 1cm tear on the side of the drivers seat which will, should I buy the car, get on my nerves if it’s not repaired. Has anyone attempted a repair like this using the various online products/kits? Details of outcomes and any advice appreciated.

    Thanks (Steve)

  9. New legislation seems to be working. Paid £266 last year and this year's renewal is £191. Difference will hopefully pay for next week's MOT😀

  10. I had this back in February, same car 2008 987.1 with nearly 80k miles, and it came with a bad misfire. Phoned my Indy and he advised me to get it towed to his place and RAC guy agreed. Diagnosed as a misfire on banks 1 and 2 but despite changing plugs and a couple of sensors the issue persisted. Only got to the bottom of it by renewing bank 1 and 2 camshaft actuators. The Indy thought it was a combination of things and to my relief it's been fine since. I hope yours isn't as serious but if the initial diagnostics don't point to a simple solution you may want to get the actuators checked. Best of luck.

  11. Used to get 2 (smallish bags) in the 986 with the woods by passengers side. Can only fit 1 modern carry bag in the 987 but woods go in boot as well. Never tried 987 Cayman but it was a real struggle getting even 1 bag in 981 Cayman and passenger seat had to be utilised. If you want to travel regularly with another golfer suggest you consider different car🤔. Good luck.

  12. My 2008 2.7 model number is M97.20 and the 3.4 model number is M97.21 (hope the latter is correct). The parts list for the mufflers indicates that the parts are the same/interchangeable i.e. 987 113 118 02 and 987 113 117 02 quoted against both models. Is this correct? (There are other numbers prefixed with 'A' which I presume relates to Auto/ Tiptronic?) Can somebody also confirm that the 3.2 model (M96) exhaust is not interchangeable with the M97's?

    Cheers, Steve.

  13. Hi GS, my first Porsche was a red 944S2 back in about 1997. Great cars and I still miss that view of the shaped rear wing out of the mirror. I've had a couple of 986's and a 981 Cayman S since and last year I went for a 987.1 2.7 Boxster. The difference between the 944 and 987 is obviously massive as they are completely different cars. All well maintained Boxsters are brilliant on fast winding roads. In the dry just point them in the right direction and no worries. I do not pretend to be anything other than an average driver and being in my 67th year my reactions are not what they used to be but in the wet the Boxster needs to be treated with respect. On a wide quiet wet road you can control the slide and it is brilliant but when it gets tight you really need your wits about you. There is loads of advice and buying pointers on this forum so read as much as you can. I bought privately and missed a few things for sure but I had a healthy contingency fund and having spent more than I had planned at least I know the car is very nearly as I want it. Like you I couldn't justify the tax difference between the basic and sport edition but the sport is very attractive. Best of luck with your search and if you get the right one you will not be disappointed.
