It does depend what the problem is. A common problem is worn inner track rod ends, and new track rods can be fitted in situ. But most garages are simply fitters, so will want to fit an exchange or new unit.

    Could that cause a leak?

That'll be a refurb job either as exchange or on your existing rack if you can wait for it and find a specialist to do it.  A couple come up when you search 'porsche steering rack refurbishment' in Google.

I’ll have a look, thank you. Do you think this could cause a screech when I pull away from stationary?

Yes, that’s what happens with a recon unit, it’s just easier to have a replacement ready to fit, rather than have your car in pieces in a garage taking up lift space while they repair your unit and return it to you. Did they say what was wrong with the rack? You sometimes get issues with leaking connectors that some keen DIYers have had a go at fixing with mixed success from memory. If you’re not handy with the spanners then a recon unit or one from a breakers is probably your best bet.

Yeah I think it will be one of the latter options for me. They said it was leaking. Also my crossover pipes are leaking coolant and cording. Joy.

I'd look to the various breakers out there for a used one, a genuine rack is an eyewatering approx. £2500 plus fitting....  Design 911 do a recon unit for £595 +VAT and £295 exchange deposit.

That sounds a bit more reasonable, thanks a lot. I assume it can’t be fixed then?

I am having 2 front springs replaced under warranty next week on my 987.2 and Porsche main dealer only charged my mechanic £ 190 for the pair, shipped.

Only the second spring to snap and car's just about to click over 150000 miles.

Sounds very much like my situation.... i too thought i'd run over something metal only to find a quarter of a coil on the road after pulling over.... is your car pulling ever so slightly to the left or right..? Mine was pulling to the left after the nearside spring broke.

Good luck and my advice would to buy yourself using the 10% PCGB membership discount from dealer. My mechanic wants the car for the day to fit both springs and no idea on cost as warranty company picking up the bill :)

    Si.

Thanks a lot. I’ve not noticed it pulling but I’ll check later.

  6. I’ve no idea what I’m describing here, but last night the car sounded like it had driven over a can or something, but hadn’t, and it sounded like bits were getting flicked up off the ground. It drove fine after. This morning it’s making a noise certainly when I turn on a sharp ish lock, and possibly a rubbing type sound when accelerating, but I’m less sure about that. I doubt you will with such vague info, but any ideas?

If they are pulling all the induction pipework and cleaning it and provide a whole MAF body, not just the sensor which can be changed separately then it might be fair.  Might be worth seeking second opinion/quote.  Where in 'Midlands' are you?  People might be able to make some recommendations, Lee at Cotswold Porsche f you are the the SW Midlands, Dove House at Rushden if you are south, Revolution at Brighouse if you are to the north are all trusted independents give their reputations on here.

Thanks mate. I use Zuffenhaus in Solihull

You have 4 sensors.  Knowing which one it was throwing a code would give you a good indication of your initial problem.

I bought a Durametric kit which I’d not be without now but before that I had a cheap OBD dongle and car scanner app that I can use on any car.   I think essential if you have a car.  Saves a lot of time and wasted money.

Interesting, thank you. The frequency of issues probably makes it a worthwhile investment.

What active codes were logged ?

Unfortunately I didn’t get them from him. It showed an error on bank 1 and 2. Then the only other one was what he said was an oxygen sensor

Still suspicious of the CO readings on your test sheet.  Mine (2000 986 S) had its test today, Fast idle CO 0.09% (limit 0.20%), Natural idle 0.06% (limit 0.30%).

After your post, I check a previous MOT from the same garage, and that also showed 0.00. I agree it looks odd.

  11. So the computer was showing a likely fault with the oxygen sensor, which they think resulted in the MOT fail. He reset it, but the car still labours above 3k revs?

  12. Ok so I’m not sure whether this Is related, but some advice would be appreciated. The engine management light just came on and it runs fine until I hit 3-4K revs, and then it struggles a fair bit. Any ideas? Coil packs?

Don't think I've ever seen CO @ 0. Not sure I trust the test.

Me neither. That’s what I thought was odd, but as it’s never failed before, I’ve never really looked at previous ones in detail.

Mine failed for the same thing we couldn't see or hear a leak but when i removed the clamps, wire brushed and resealed joints the tickover changed slightly and it passed MOT at revisit.

    Thanks mate
