  1. I’ve got a DesignTek exhaust on my 986 that previous owner put on - I love it, and have had positive comments from others I’ve driven in convey with. Not sure how it compares with standard OEM exhaust. Mines about 12 yrs old now, so maybe they bed in

  2. Windscreens are an odd one, as the price paid by insurers seems to be much higher than you’d pay directly.

a few years ago, after picking up a large crack, I enquired at our local National Windscreens and he asked was I going through insurance or not. I wasn’t sure so asked for a direct to customer price, which was around £400.

I decided to go through insurance (£75 excess) and the amount charged to them (and us policyholders) was £1300!

If you think it might be any use I can send you the 2000 MY Porsche workshop manual for the exterior body which covers the convertible roof.  PM me your email and I'll send it by wetransfer, its 36MB.....

That’s very kind ½cwt - your mailbox is full but PM waiting…

  4. Replaced original roof with a facelift glass screen version from 2003 model (genuine Porsche).  A couple of observations:

the clamshell doesn’t sit flush when roof down - it will if you give it a gentle push, but on the motor the shell sits about ½ inch high

the roof latch catches on the wind deflector when opening.

Anyone got any thoughts/solutions to either of those?

It actually took me a lot longer than I was expecting. Quite tricky to get the 13mm mounting bolts to line up between the frame and structure. By the time I got it finished the sun had gone!

  5. Hi Rav, with the revs going up and down, I agree with the baron - check the MAF first. It’s dead simple to do.  I didn’t even have to drive mine as it idled rough until I disconnected MAF.

The noisy air-con can be an air pocket in the lines (apparently).

  6. I’m not sure you’re looking at the correct connection there. Does your actuator look like this?

If so it’s only got a small plug that clips on. Very difficult to see. I changed mine last year and mostly did it by feel

  7. Over the last few days, I've had an increasingly annoying squeaking coming from the front of my car.  It was pretty much non-stop, not just over big undulations but more-or-less continuous.  Not loud, but one the sounds that once you've heard it, you can always hear it.  Fearing the worst, I suspected some sort of suspension issue, and was disappointed as I'd only replaced the coffin arms about 5-6 years ago.  Of course, there are plenty of other components that it could be.  These cars always seem to need something replacing, so I was pretty much resigned to looking at the suspension again.

I'd recently replaced the air-con drier and had the battery cover and air filter cover off, so for some bizarre reason, even though these are plastic, I thought I'd pop the bonnet and just check everything was fitted correctly - really knowing they couldn't be the cause of the squeaking.  Of course, they were fine.  However, while the bonnet was open, I grabbed hold of the spare wheel to give the car a bounce and see if I could identify the source.  Ha!  The spare wheel was squeaking against the post.  Somehow the nut had worked just a smidge loose.  Quick hand tighten and all gone - spirited test drive confirmed all good.

Now that sort of 'fix' doesn't happen often!   Reminded me of the 80's GTI advert where the squeak was the young lady's earing.

  8. Road tested the car after a couple of weeks off the road.  Noticed a sweet smell a few weeks ago after a day out.  Sure enough, a quick check showed a coolant leak around the offside radiator.

During investigation, I also realised the fan wasn't working on low speed either.  So, off with the old, possibly original rad (I replaced the nearside one 7 years ago).  Lots of debris between the radiator and condensor, so cleared out the other side too while the bumper was off.

Replacement bought from coolpartsuk.  The last one I bought from them was Behr (OE), however, this latest one is chinese.  Seems ok, fit well and comes with 5 yr warranty so fingers crossed.  Old radiator was a right pain to get out.  It took me ages to release the hoses, but all went back in easily enough.

New home made ballast resistor bought and fitted (see Have you seen the price of ballast resistors thread)

While I had the wheel arch liner out, I decided to take a look at my fuel filler lock actuator too.  Ever since I've owned the car, its made an embarrassing grinding noise when locking.  The actuator is a bit tricky to get at.  You have to remove the carbon filter (the black box at rear of offside front wheel) by undoing the 10mm nut.  I was able to just move the filter out of the way.

The actuator itself is above and behind the filter and there is little room.  You almost have to work by feel.  There are two torx bolts to loosen - I had to buy a small hex ratchet spanner to hold the bit.  The bolts just need loosening.  There is a small electric connection to disconnect and slip off the manual cable release from the plastic locking arm.  The actuator should lift up out of its cradle.

Manually motoring the arm, it still made a noise.  Its a sealed unit, so I took some time to split it open to have a look:

The white plastic cog had some missing teeth

New OE part bought from driven2automotive for the pretty reasonable price of £36.

Fitting was again tricky, and mostly by feel, but working beautifully now.

Many thanks to Paul Adamson on the Facebook Boxster 986 Owners group who inspired me to try!

So, three jobs done.  A great afternoon to test drive and all seems to be working well.  Phew

  9. Not as much as I’d planned. Was intending to replace radiator this afternoon but it was one of those days. Took forever to get lower hose off old rad. - yes, I should have just cut it off and replaced it!
Car now looking rather sorry for itself all empty up front.  Plan to fit new rad tomorrow and while the liner is out, service the fuel flap lock servo (it works but is noisy)

  10. Spent several hours trying to adjust my roof so that the latch doesn't strike the wind deflector - no luck.  Any help much appreciated.

Old roof worked fine with deflector but, due to an unrepairable/replaceable window, I replaced the roof in Autumn with another.  I changed out the roof and frame assembly.  As it was Autumn, I had removed the deflector, as recommended in the manual, and the replacement roof worked fine.  I've recently put the deflector back in and now the roof latch strikes the deflector on passing.

I've loosened all the 6 mounting bolts (in fact I removed them all) and tried to shift the whole frame with no success - there's not a lot of adjustment, and tinkered with the adjustment forks but they only seem to affect fore/aft positioning and don't seem to affect the height the roof rises to.

Essentially, I need to lift the whole assembly, or the angle of the roof folding needs to adjusted, but I can't see how to do either.  I've searched BoXa net, Pistonheads, 986forum and Rennlist with no joy.  Any guidance gratefully received!
