  1. i went with a Pioneer SPH-DA230DAB - mine has Bose so needed the optical adapter, bought this and the rest of the fitting kit from Incartec - Porsche 987 and 997 Single/ Double DIN stereo upgrade fitting kit (WITH BOSE) BLACK - (FK-959-SWCB)  £298.33 (each). I bought the DAB aerial elsewhere (Amazon I think).  I bought the pioneer used for about £230 so in all it was just over £500 for everything - my car is a 2010 Gen2.

Not a difficult swap, just takes a bit of time and patience - the result looks fine but the comment about the screen is valid and in very bright sunlight the screen washes out but I dont see a way to avoid that. Sound is OK but generally I use it with Amazon music streaming and the main focus is to use Apple or Google maps (make sure to download the offline maps for your trips to avoid the pain of losing connection in poor signal area's) - the maps work well.

If Porsche produced an updated unit like they have for other models I would probably switch to that even at the exhorbitant price that would no doubt be charged.

  2. Was it outside in the sun when this happened? (yes I know "the sun" is a novel concept at the moment) - mine used to do this when it got hot, two likely causes are the hard drive is on the way out or the power supply. In my case I switched the hard drive to an SSD and thought this fixed it but a hot day say the same issue arise, in my case the Porsche logo displayed permanently then the unit powered off and wouldn't restart. I did consider repair but the costs are silly so I swapped to a Pioneer Android unit around £400 with the necessary adapters etc. Now I have up to date maps etc.

  3. Put the car up onto four axle stands, removed the undertrays to inspect the brake and coolant pipes - all looked very good which for a 2010 car was a bit of a surprise. Sprayed lanoguard onto the underside prior to refitting the trays.

  4. Had my 2010 S for four years in February - the longest that I've owned any Porsche and I've had sixteen of the things so that probably tells me something but not sure what! If I say its a keeper I'll probably end up flipping it within a month so I'll keep quiet. Nothing similar that I would swap for so it would be something quite different.

  5. The Rat Zapper is around £22 on Amazon - having had this problem which resulted in the wiring to my ECU and Fuel guage being chewed on a 981 - the ECU fix wasnt cheap I concur with the advice to first check your garage for anything that may attract them - in my case it was dried dog food as discovered by the Porsche mechanic who range me up to ask "have you got a dog? - because there is about a kilo of dried food stored in the car". Once I removed that the blighters moved on - I did also add an unltrasonic deterrent, who knows if that works but it was cheap and worth a try (I still use one today). They do have a taste for wiring, at the time I also had a Mk1 MX5 in the garage and that was also chewed but I fixed that myself.

    Good luck

  6. Mine is currently in the bodyshop being sprayed satin black - originally red. I did look at hydro dipping and that is viable but after stripping etc worked out around £400, leather is lovely but £1200 and dont be tempted by the Ebay leather retrim kits, all I have read is that these are not fit for purpose. Hopefully my respray option works out well, will collect it tomorrow.

  7. Brakes disks and pads changed and when putting on the offside wheel I noticed a letter marked on the disk surface...it said "L" - I checked the box and that had a small L next to the part number. Yes, they are handed and I'd forgotten so sods law has it that with a 50/50 chance I would get it wrong and I did. At least disassembly was fast and easy the 2nd time around apart from the wear sensors that came from Mintex and seem to be made from pastry - both sides crumbled on removal but luckily the originals where fine so they went back on. Before anybody says "having the internal vanes pointing the wrong way wont be an issue with road driving..." it is to me!

Does the Carnewal make a big difference?    Mine is stock exhaust - and I've come from having a Mustang with H pipes that was VERY loud.   I don't want to go back to that (as I'd avoid starting too early in the morning!) but I would like to make a change that would actually make a decent impact to the noise but not sure that YouTube videos do it much justice or if the Carnewal is the way to go.

I found the Carnewal on my 987.2S to be quite subtle but pleasant sounding, certainly not in your face - the Dansk, that I fitted to my 986S was no different to the stock unit despite being a "sports" exhaust but it did look like an OEM. I wouldnt have a problem using Carnewal again.

    Hi all,

Does anyone have, or know someone with a Sport Design steering wheel available?

In a perfect world I’d like the Alcantara one, but happy just to get one at all.

My car has PDK with Sports/Sports Plus.

    Cheers

These usually appear on Ebay, plenty of PDK's normally and very few manuals. Thats where I would go then send it to Royal Steering wheels for an alcantara retrim, they do an excellent job for circa £200. The wheel I would expect to cost £300-£500.

  10. CTEK without doubt but dont expect them to last forever; my original Porsche badged one failed after three years and similarly with the CTEK branded one that replaced it - that said they work great when actually functioning and Ive now got two more and having looked at alternatives have stayed loyal to CTEK

  11. It was a chip repair and I contributed a nominal £10 to it which was what the policy required - interestingly I had the renewal through for the policy that I made the claim against and its dropped on last year and no reduction in my no claims duration (so they clearly didnbt consider it to be important). In summary either handle it yourself, ignore it and hope its not noticed (I dont think my Boxster insurer had noticed unlike Carole Nash with the mini cover) or fess up and take the hit - in future my decision will be to pay out of my own pocket - unless its a screen replacement which is an expensive route.

  12. I've just switched insurers for my wifes mini and my 987S - when completeting the application I ticked the no claims in the last 5 years box for both of us. Surprisingly, a few days later Carole Nash demanded an extra premium contributuion for the mini of ~70% because I hadnt disclosed a claim from another policy held on my daily car. They said that I had claimed for damage in the past 12 months and checking the date I found that it coincided with a windscreen repair. I hadnt considered disclosing a windscreen chip repair (I had forgotten about it and also thought it wasnt relevant) and after getting a confirmation from my other insurer that the claim was only related to glass repair Carole Nash very generously (not really) only demanded an extra 40% to the original quote which I declined to pay so cancelled the policy. I found somebody else who charged me £20 more than the original Carole Nash quote and also went back to the Boxster broker to tell them about the screen claim - they also added ~£20 to their original price.

Lesson learned about disclosure and also for a trvial claim like a windscreen repair I would have been better off paying in full out of my own pocket...I'm now stuck with this for the next 5 years!

Unlikely, any dealer would want to sell their own warranty

Ive bought a dealer car with the extended warranty passed to me as a "private buyer" so yes it does happen. As with all of the Porsches that Ive owned though I've never claimed a penny back against a warranty and after 16 of them I wonder if my luck could run out!

  14. Not a bad price at all for two years and reflects the reliability of the cars in general - of all the cars Ive owned Porsche has been head and shoulders above the rest of those from Europe - very few issues if they are serviced regularly and I'm including Gen 1 997's and 986's with their engine weaknesses (which never got to me).

Last time I saw my old car the owner had covered it in ‘Porsche’ stickers - just in case you didn’t know what it was - poor thing :(

Not yours then! But it is mine and fully agree (I would wouldnt I) that red leather sets the car apart, mine has full leather which adds a bit more quality IMO. The red on the 987 is quite deep coloured, my last BMW, an M5 also had red leather which I liked but that was more orange in hue and not as nice on the eyes. Thankfully Hood69 deferred and the car is staying safe and sound in my hands.

  16. my 2010 3.4S returns around 24mpg according to the computer and no complaints from me at that level. I did have one a few years back that exceeded 30mpg on a mway drive but I avoid those drives now. I use 95 RON and Millers additive to boost the octane number by 2, been doing that for years with no ill effects and it does save a few bob over time.

  17. I did this on my 986, first bought a set of stalks on Ebay from a US breaker - decent price. Then picked up a part-assembled loom which in total came to about £160 with the stalks. Took the dash apart and fitted the stalks...the indicator stalk switch was however duff and after trying to fix it had to scrap the whole lot and re-start which after some checking result in me going new this time around from Euro car parts who sent me  unit in an OEM sealed box and plastic bag but which was the wrong stalk set (mislabelled at the factory); so back that went to eventually be replaced - lesson I learned was that the stalks do fail so going 2nd hand can be false economy and wasnt that much cheaper than new. The 2nd time of doing the job was more succesful but I did need to get the coding done by a local member so it wasnt only hardware on the 986. Definitely worthwhile as this also added the computer function so outside temp and range (hard to beleive these were options but it was a Porsche).

...what setting do you guys have it set too.... i use sport 8.

Sport 5 (sometimes 6) - anything above this can get unruly in lower gears (plenty of wheel spin if not careful), reminds me of my old M5 with its dual clutch box which always needed a sensitive right foot. Only time mine isn't switched on now is when driving in towns or slow traffic when the standard setting feels more appropriate.
