I had this and it was the car going into "shipping mode" it is called something else but I cannot remmenber what!

At the same time my headlight washers would not work.

Tried to get it done at an indy and they failed, so went to Porsche Cardiff they failed at first but then left car battery disconnected overnight and tried again worked fine after that. 

I think it is common when battery fails and voltage drops to low.

Mine is an 05 and is loud, found it had a hole in the back box!

Sounds like it is the joint but that is fine.

Hole is on the top of the box cannot be seen just put your hand acrross the top of the rear box and you will feel air if you leave it idle.
