  1. My current thinking is that PGB recalling the GT4s was probably out of neccessity. The subsequent models using the manual were probably limited in numbers and therefore a 'wait snd see if they fail' mode was probsbly adopted. But I hve no proof of this.

I think we all hope you get a good outcome here.

Unfortunately I dont have any faith in Big Business looking after customers these days.  Even if you did only pay 5000 they will still be making a profit I'm sure.

Have you made any progress investigating the availability of spare parts and / or anyone willing to try to fix it - or sourcing a used box?

No, I haven't. Given that there are so few manuals, and that this is a 981/982 only part, and the fact that I'm in Ireland led me to see if the dealer would come up with a solution.

  3. Latest update. Porsche GB and the centre will take up 40% of the bill - I will have to contribute £5,000.

I have indicated that I'm not happy with this given that the GT4 models which had the same gearbox were subject to a recall. At the time of purchase, I was sold a vehicle with a gearbox that had a known fault. I have asked whether the OPC believes it would be beneficial for me to contact Porsche GB directly.

I also asked whether the box to be fitted is new or reconditioned exchange, whether it is a modified design (if not, will it strip 3rd gear again in another 40k miles) and more questions regarding stock availability, lead times etc. The car has been with them now for 7 weeks.

It looks like the only bit left to deal with is the thick black wiring loom running from front to back. It seems to start under the dash and head into the engine bay with the shift cables. I am unable to work out where where to unplug this, but as it starts below the carpet and finishes above it I can't see how the carpet can be removed without disconnecting it.

If the trim covers the carpet across the centre console, would it be worth looking at cutting it?

Try this..Get a tin of quality satan black spray paint and masked the area you do not want sprayed. The carpets will come up a treat and less mess than dye..have used this method ..great results..

Or satin black - otherwise it would be the devil of a job...

  6. I'm just back from a trip around Lake Garda - pre season. Speed limits are 50kph all around the lake and the one good road in the region, the Strada della Forra, was closed due to a landslide and didn't look to be opening any time soon.

Apart from that, it was a great place to visit. We stayed at Malchesine, then Riva del Garda before touring down the west side of the lake and staying at Pescheria del Garda. Lovely spots with great food and wines - and not too dear. The good thing about being out of season was that there was loads of parking available and not too many tourists. We did a day trip to Verona (worth doing) and didn't even have to queue to get into Juliet's balcony. We got a recommendation to visit Borghetto and that was worth a visit - houses built in the river for protection. in the mid 80s I did a trip around Como, but can't recall much about that. I hear that Maggiore is the pick of them.

  7. Mine came with PZeros on it. I found them harsh in cold weather and the Ackermann skipping was dreadful when reversing. Switched to PS4S and never looked back.

Risk of wandering off topic it's said that the parts that cause probs in the PDK are usually servos and sensors which are generic parts made by Bosch or ZF and fitted to a lot of boxes. They are cheap and available. Just needs someone with the nads to pull it apart and test it. There's a big thread about it somewhere - poss rennlist.

Jeff Richardson has done an excellent strip down of a PDF gearbox recently.

  9. My 718 had a water leak through the rear drains a few years ago (there is some relevance to this story, honest!). The foam holds a horrendous amount of water. I took the carpets out completely on the driver's side (on the 718 they are in 2 halves) thanks to Jeff Richardson's YouTube channel. The carpet hung up in my greenhouse for about three weeks until it dried out fully. And this was in the summer when temperatures get up to the mid-30s in there. I squeezed the bottom of the foam each day to drive out excess water. In my opinion, unless you remove the carpets and foam completely, you will be chasing your tail to find where the leak is coming in.

  10. Another update - and thanks for all the responses.

My sales guy rang. The SA had given the worst-case scenario - probably in hindsight it's the best thing to do. Belfast have rasied a ticket with Porsche UK initially stating how thoroughly decent a chap I am (ahem....!) having bought three Porsches from them etc etc and given the known fault in this type of gearbox would they contribute. I will update when I know more. I have no issue with contributing - it's over 7 years old, no warranty and hasn't been serviced by the dealer in a while.

The known issue is that instead of the gears being located by keys and slots, they get welded on - the weld breaks, the gear spins freely etc. Well documented on GT4 models - this has the same 6-speed box. Just that there aren't that many manual 718s.

For going down the 2nd hand route - who knows whether the replacement box would be just about to do the same thing. Cheaper to wait for claims than to issue a recall, I suppose.

  11. Ok update.

Car with Belfast for 5 weeks. No communications. I rang, got the message that nobody was available and they would call back. That didn't happen. Rang again yesterday and eventually the call was returned. New gearbox required - £8,500. Out of warranty so down to me. I asked about Goodwill from Porsche and the lady advised that as the car is older than 6, that's not an option. She said something about having to apply about special circumstances and would I like them to do that. Really? Of course I would like them to. So still none the wiser. Also, unsure if it is an exchange replacement, whether the £8,500 is the cost of the 'box or a fitted price. The saga rumbles on...

  12. I have an SD. Had it since new, just turned 134k a few days ago. Brilliant car, effortless cruiser, holds the road well and the wife loves it too. I'd replace it with similar but they don't do diesel any more. A few minor issues; intercooler replaced under warranty at about 8 months due to a weep, door window switches replaced again under warranty as the chrome fell off, TPM valves replaced, again under warranty too. Replaced an Adblu pipe at my own expense as it furred up (250?). Apart from that, regular servicing every 20k, PDK service every 40k and it has been very reliable. Tyres lasted 60k a set which is unheard off (Michelin Latitude Tour All Seasons). Needs a full set of pads and discs regularly though (they are heavy). Replaced a couple of CV joints too, but it is a high miler. Highly recommended. If you're getting one, make sure it has the surround cameras which are brilliant when parking - especially with the overhead view.

So ballpark £5K for an exchange and £9K for a new manual one.

    Plus the labour to fit.

Don't think exchanges are available. I'm thinking of 15k plus fitting plus clutch. The car might even be an economic write off. What's a 2016 718S worth? 25k?

Have a look at the RPM Technik website https://rpmtechnik.co.uk/transmission-upgrades/

They seem to do all sorts of gearbox repairs and upgrades so it doesn’t seem impossible. Worth having a chat with?  Maybe something they’ve seen before.

I have been in touch with a UK company called ASR Repairs who offer gearbox repairs. Trouble is, you lot have no idea how the 2016 referendum decision has made getting goods moved between NI and the UK so difficult despite what everyone says. I recently bought a load of machinery from Axminster and had to get EORI, XI EORI and TSS numbers before a carrier would accept the delivery. Might be a similar situation getting a gearbox to and from UK. Plus I'd imagine it would be heavy which = expensive.

I will be leaving the car into Porsche Belfast this evening and hopefully they will find a diagnostic slot over the next week or so.

Yes it is.  I thought my PDK was broke or dead.  If no one can fix them then you need to replace.  Porsche offer an exchange so it is not quite as expensive as just buying outright.  I asked about a manual box for the 996 and this is not offered on an exchange basis and costs 10500 plus VAT.  So that gives you an idea.  The only stipulation with the exchange is it has to pass a visual inspection.  So my 981 was crash damaged and I told the guy in the OPC this so he cautioned me that if it has any external damage it will not pass a visual inspection otherwise it is fine.  So Porsche are not only cornering the market by only offering replacement only and selling no parts to be used in repairs but they are also scooping up the damaged boxes by doing this on an exchange basis only.  Make sense?

Gulp. and that was at least a year ago if I recall your posting. Plus a new clutch (obviously) and the labour. Looks like it's going to be an expensive job. shyate.

OPC told me 6250 plus VAT for an exchange PDK for my 981.  And yes not many people will repair.  There are a few companies now popping up who are willing to have a go.  I can offer some suggestions if it comes to that.  Keep us posted.

It's a manual. Don't suppose an exchange is an option!

No issues with repairs to a manual box that I’ve heard of, I thought the “fix” to the GT4 issue was achieved by a repair rather than a replacement?  PDK another matter entirely.  Have you had the car serviced by an OPC?  If so there should be a contribution from Porsche given the age/ mileage.  I run the extended warranty basically to cover the engine and gearbox - everything else seems to be a challenge to get approved.

From what I have read online, it's a replacement. I didn't opt for extended warranty given the low mileage, the need for OPC servicing (100 miles round trip plus a day hanging about) and the fact that my 986 was bulletproof.

    15 minutes ago, iborguk said:

Yes, I read that thread plus a few others. I don't suppose they will have exchange units available like the mass manufacturers often do.

Manual or pdk? (Assuming a manual)

Yes, manual 6 speed. From what I can see online, there's a gear that had previously been located by a key that was changed to a weld instead. The weld gives up and therefore no drive. All other gears are working perfectly. Unfortunately for me, no extended warranty as I don't do big miles and my last 986 gave no issues in the 11 years that I ran it as a daily. I'm anticipating a large bill for a new gearbox as apparently Porsche don't allow repairs to this box. I wonder will Porsche UK contribute? Was a known fault on 981GT4 which used the same gearbox, but as most were tracked, the issue came to light very early and most were replaced under warranty. Only applies to the very first 718s though.

  17. Had my 718S since new, 44.5k on the clock. Yesterday, I lost all drive in 3rd gear. Everything else is fine, all gears selecting as normal, no noise, no leaks, just no drive in 3rd.

    Any gearbox specialists in here?
