Did you get sent any photos of it fitted the wrong way round as I,d love to know how your engine actually ran with it like that?

No sadly I did get any pictures but my car ran just fine, the only reason I had it all done was because the clutch pedal was a little heavy and I had a small judder when setting off. The IMS was just a while your in there and wow am I glad I did.

I don't have any paper work for the IMS or clutch being done and I'm glad I dont as maybe I would have just left alone.

Thanks guys for the helpful comments. I’ll leave alone for now.

The only reason I've had mine done is because it was done at the same time as the clutch.

Other problems came out because of shoddy work done by either previous owner or garage.

There was a phase about 5 years ago where several people replaced their own, or asked the garage to replace it.  Interesting to know if this was such a replacement or the original from way back when.

If the original and it was 20 years old, that suggests that function wasn't much compromised!

One of the reasons that Revolution came up with was that about 5-6 years ago when these cars were at rock bottom pricing, people did things themselves and that is possibly why it was fitted wrong. I've no paper work regarding a new clutch or IMS and the car did come with a lot of paper work.

@Tonybandit I have posted costs several times, it really is not an issue as long as it is relevant and detailed, as you have done.

Hopefully this work gives you peace in of mind and you can get out and enjoy your investment.

Oh I will enjoy the car so much more now.

I'm just so glad I've had it done as it does seam it was a ticking bomb.

    Chains next.

  5. OK so I hope I'm nit over stepping the mark but here goes.

    My total was £2401.75.

For that I got the clutch, flywheel, RMS, Duel row bearing (LN ceramic) Cam seal, Clutch seal, Mobil 3000 x1, oil filter, tensioner O ring, Flywheel bolts, Clutch Bolt, stainless bolts for anti roll bar, 2 exhaust clamps + bolts and exhaust gasket.

Job well done if you ask me.

I'm very happy and they will be doing the chains next year as a small amount of deviation was found when running so they suspect the chains and guides.

    Hi Tony,

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

I'm looking to buy my first 986 S very soon and was wondering how much this kind of job costs as it may be something I need to consider in the near future, specifically clutch + IMS.

    Many thanks,

I will message you the price as I'm not sure if I should be putting prices on here.

If it's OK I will but will wait for admin to OK it.

AP = Automotive Products.  One of the top clutch and brakes manufacturers so no worries.

I wasn't sure if it was that good but the question is, fit a top clutch and then do shoddy work fitting the IMS cos it was clearly done at the same time. Unless someone has paid twice?

Just doesn't make sence to me.

  8. So I've got my car back after a new RMS IMS and clutch plus flywheel.

I didn't realise how stiff my clutch peddle was till now.

So the guy at Revolution said that I've been lucky and the flywheel and clutch was at the end of its life.

The IMS was put in with the clip to the wrong side so it has been pushed in and broke the clip that is on the bearing. I have a duel row bearing and now have the LN upgrade ceramic bearing. Am I glad I've had this done.

Also the clutch was an AP clutch, if anyone knows what that is, but it had been changed at some point in its life. I don't have any paper work for it but I'm glad I didn't as I'm not sure I would have changed it till it was too late.

I'm now going to try find the past owners so I can get some info on who fitted the IMS and the clutch.

So if anyone knows this car, it's reg when I bought it was Y188 NBY would be greatly appreciated.

Looking again I can see the groove in the picture on the web link I posted above.  Don't suppose anyone has pictures showing the spring clip and the groove on the shaft?

Short answer, it is handed and therefore can be fitted the wrong way round...

They did say that the spring clip was also not fitted correctly and broken.

I've still not got my car as I did say I wasn't in any rush to have it back.

As soon as I do get it back I will get more info for you all. Its deffo been an eye opener and the guy at Revolution did say he had never seen it before and has fitted way to many to count.

  10. Not sure 8f it makes any difference but mine is a duel row bearing.

I will ask the question once I'm there and get some clarification on what's happened and why they have said its in the wrong way round.

Maybe getting it back today but they had to order my DMF in.

Strongly suspect the only handed-ness is the side the part number is printed on. Hence revolution saying not to worry.

I think and I may have miss understood but it maybe slightly shamford on the inner race so the centre bolt stays in. He said when he unbolted it, it just fell out of the bearing and normally it doesn't. I will ask when I pick up the car and get more info for you all.

Your decision to replace the bearing has defused a bomb that would surely have wrecked the engine. Whatever that bearing is supposed to do all day every day, hasn't been done in the whole life of the car. How has it not done irrevocable damage?

They have assured me all is OK. I can only believe them as they have done so many and have loads of experience.

  13. In an answer to you all, the guys at Revolution can't say if it has been fitted from new like that as its not something they have ever seen.

A close call is for sure and wow am I glad I've had it done.

I have a lot of history with the car and all the receipts back when it was fist born. There was no paper work for a new clutch or IMS which is why I've had the clutch done and the IMS as a while your in there job.

Revolution have assured me that it's fine and no long lasting damage has been done.

My thought is what if the IMS bearings that fail have all been fitted the wrong way round??? Worms can of comes to mind lol

  14. OK so after a lot of thought I decided to get my clutch done and while at it have the IMS changed. It had a small judder on set off but nothing that I was really worried about. So I chose Revolution Porsche in Leeds to do it and after a call it was booked in.

Today I dropped off my car and walked away and went back to work. While sat at my desk my phone rang and the lovely lady at Revolution told me I would need a new flywheel, OK I said and proceeded to put the phone down. After a few more hours of daydreaming sorry WORKING! I got a call from a gentleman from Revolution and he told me that all was somewhat OK BUT my IMS bearing was in the wrong way round. OMG what the hell. He assured me all was going to be OK and that the new bearing was in fine and all will be OK.

I'm shocked anyone would do something like this and possibly destroy a cars engine. I've worked on cars bikes and lorries all my life but I do believe that this is a job for the people that know porsches, that's why I chose Revolution and glad I did.

Anyone out there that is thinking of doing a job like this please please think about it and don't leave a car the same as mine was left. Im very experienced with cars and even I have left the IMS to the professionals. While my car has been there I have had 3 calls from them, telling me how things are going and keeping me informed. You can't get better than that.

Anyway I will have my car back soon and can't wait.

A big thumbs up to Revolution, I can't thank them enough and would recommend them to anyone.

  15. Today I have taken the roof off and fitted new membrain. The rams have punctured holes in the old ones at some point in it's life so I got some new ones and fitted them. All good now and what a job. Easy but if your gonna do it, make sure you have help to lift the roof back on.

  16. Today I fitted two new rear tyres. Also I've renewed the rear pads and now decided to renew all the brake lines, fluids and filters. Getting ready for the summer.

I have a pair of Bridgestone n3 265 35 18 part worn tyres if they are any good to anyone. They have some good tread on them but I wanted matching tyres all round. If anyone is 8nterested pm me and I will measure the tread.
