Exactly what I said. I’m sure I could knock that up in a couple of hours with a bit of good quality 10 mm ply, some wood glue, a few panel pins, and a jigsaw.

My thoughts too, although I have the genuine kit, picked up here for £80, new & boxed, soon after I bought my car. Fortunately it was Metropole Blue to match my interior - if it had been black it might have been grabbed sooner.

Reading through the thread I’ve just been thinking that a small sheet of bendy ply for the curved bits, 6mm mdf for the flat parts and epoxy to hold it together (a bit like a stitch & glue canoe) could easily produce the base to be covered in carpet like the original item. As Clarkson would say, “How hard can it be?”

  2. That’s my understanding too. If we are to use the current system in the car, each key needs to be separate and coded to the car. That’s how one key can remain unused for years yet still sync - each one ‘rolls’ their codes independent of the other. The aftermarket, piggy-back system is obviously less sophisticated and is separate from the factory setup altogether.
I hadn’t given any thought to disarming the alarm and I would need to read the other thread more fully to see if that aspect is mentioned at all

Also for that price I can’t imagine it’s got rotating codes so pretty easy to “grab and replay”

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about the potential for anyone doing a ‘grab and play’ in order to gain entry. Nobody will know that you’re using a non-OEM system and, after all, a Stanley knife will let anyone in via the roof.
Very good point about the alarm though. I don’t remember any mention of it in that article but probably haven’t read it thoroughly.

  4. From my understanding of the 3rd party kit, it doesn't utilise the original unit. It is simply piggy backed onto the wires running from that unit and replicating the same functions.
In my case the original ECU and remote key is working perfectly and (if it will work) I would be wanting to add the 3rd party kit to run independently, alongside the original. Ideally, this would give me a flip key too as a bonus.

  5. Yes, my second key still has the transponder and is just missing the remote function. I don't feel like parting with £300+ to simply have the remote function on a second, spare key, particularly if £30 or even less will add that functionality in a separate fob. I've even found a similar kit with two Audi style flip keys, with blades that suit the Boxster. Obviously I would have to swap the transponder pill from my 'spare' key but that would give the bonus of having a flip key that remotely operates the central locking for doors and either frunk or boot.

  6. My 2003 986 came with the full compliment of keys, two remote and one valet key. However, only one of the remote keys worked and I initially assumed the the other may need the battery replaced or the buttons re-soldered, but it turned out that the circuit board was missing completely. It had probably failed and was discarded by a previous owner. I know that I can buy a new key and have it programmed at significant cost but stumbled across this article that seems to provide a fairly simple and cost effective alternative. Has anyone here attempted/succeeded this type of modification?

  7. I bought my ‘03 2.7 at the end of July 2017, so 6+ years at this point. It was, and still is, a low mileage car (now roughly 55k), seal grey and extended Metropole Blue leather, all original paint and very clean. It’s a fair weather car only and I have no intention to sell/change to anything else. A nice 997 might be tempting if the right one cropped up but I’m not seriously thinking about it. My 986 replaced a mk1 MX5 with a previous history of MGB, TR4 etc, so I’m perfectly happy with the Boxster being a classic rather than a modern sports car - a GT3 console delete helps with the classic vibe. Happily there was a boxed, unused original one in the correct colour for sale on the forum just after I bought the car.

  8. My 2003 car still has the original 3 keys, 2x remote keys plus the valet key. However, one of the remote keys is missing the remote components - the battery, board and buttons. While not necessary at the moment I would buy another full remote key but would prefer a more robust key, similar to the more modern Porsche keys, if that was possible. Alternatively, if a remote fob could be programmed to match (or car programmed) that would suffice.
    Is any if this possible?

  9. I got a new set on my ‘03 Boxster a couple of weeks ago. I went for Goodyear Asymmetric 5 (225.40/18 265.35/18) instead of PS4s. I had priced them with Kwikfit (£435) and mentioned it to my local tyre guy and told him that I’d rather give him the business if he could supply them in or around that price and he came back with a quote of £395 with 2 days delivery. I have to say I’m very happy with them so far. I would imagine that 17” should be a bit less.

That sounds a great price for those tyres. Might have take a wee drive over to Norn Irn when I need a new set. 😀

I had priced them with Kwikfit (£435) and mentioned it to my local tyre guy - it’s a small operation but he does have some high-end clients and at least one Porsche Indy as a regular. I told him that I’d rather give him the business if he could supply them in or around that price and he came back with a quote of £395 with 2 days delivery. To be fair, he has had quite a bit of business from me in the past couple of years so maybe I was getting a good deal, although he did assure me that he was happy with this.

  11. Got my ‘03 2.7 MOT’d this afternoon, with a new set of Goodyear Asymmetric 5. The full set (18”) set me back £395 fitted, but it really does feel so much better. The previous PS2s were well past their best. Oil and filter ready for the weekend and then hopefully some better weather to enjoy a bit of use.

  12. Got the IMS bearing replaced with a hybrid ceramic upgrade, new rear main seal, new clutch kit, oil (Millers 5W 50) & filters.

For the record, it's a 2003 2.7 with 51,000 miles and the original IMS had its seals intact and feels fine. There was a minor weep from the RMS so hopefully this will leave it good for the foreseeable future.
