  1. Hello from another PNW'er!

Yes, I have been using my car without the remote feature for 4 years.  When I purchased my car it came with only one Remote Key that was falling apart and was taped together!  Like you I visited my local Porsche dealers service department and almost needed to be picked up off the floor when they told me the cost of another remote key!

However, the parts department was more understanding and told me about what they called the basic key which sounds like what you have.  The basic key has 2 part numbers one for the blade and one for the head.  996-637-041-01 and 996-538-531-00

The basic key is just that, a key it has no remote buttons, but does have a LED light in the head.  Like you I manually lock and unlock the doors and use the levers on the sill to open the frunk and trunk.  I don't have any issue with the alarm going off after 10 seconds, it works normally turning off when I unlock the doors and setting when I manually lock the doors.

The keys did have to be programed to the car by the Porsche dealer for which they charged me 1/2 hour labor.  All totaled I got 2 basic keys and programming for $250.US

Perhaps your keys are not properly programmed to the car?

  2. My car came with only one key, it was the original full function with the buttons.  I visited my local Porsche dealer and almost needed oxygen after hearing the price for another full function key.  BUT, the guy in the parts department sensing my shock, mentioned a cheaper alternative.  There is a basic key that does not have the remote buttons.  It will open the doors via the key hole in the doors and start the car.  I do have to open the drivers door to access the release levers for the frunk and boot when I use this key and I also have to manually lock the door from the outside keyhole.

The Part numbers are 996-637-041-01 for the body and 996-538-531-00 for the Blank.  The dealer had to special order them as they came precut based on my cars VIN.  The dealer also had to program them to the car.  All totaled it cost me $250. USD for two of these basic keys.

I've been using them for 3 years now.

  3. I've been using the Porsche OEM outdoor cover.  I park outside and wanted it to protect from tree sap and tree needles.  I felt it was over priced when I bought it, the Porsche tax for the logo on the front of the cover..., but it has served me well for the past 3 years.  I use it in the Spring, Fall and Winter, but haven't felt the need for it in the Summer months.  It appears that this Fall and Winter may be it's last as it is starting to age, I have had a couple seams re-stitched recently.

  4. Thanks for this information and photos, it is very helpful !

I need to replace one of my mounting plates as it has a crack at the point where the light locating pin latches into place.  I glued the cracked piece back in place as a temporary fix, and have been dreading replacement.  Based on what you've posted here it seems like I have no need to fret.

  5. Accepted the arrival of Fall and installed the hardtop.

Also replaced the left side window regulator and swapped the original grey dashboard gauge cover with a black one.  My Boxster has a grey interior and in certain lighting conditions the reflection from the grey dash onto the windshield created some visibility issues.  The black gauge cover has greatly reduced the reflection on the windshield above it.  I wish there was a simple fix for the passenger side, I'm not up to changing the entire dash!

  6. I replaced the Upper and Lower belt rollers and the Tension roller along with a power steering hose.

I was originally getting into the front of the engine to replace a leaking power steering hose and upon removal of the drive belt I found that all the rollers had about 2 or 3 mm of wobble in them!  I had replaced the drive belt a year ago and did not notice any wobble in the rollers at that time.  There was no visual sign that the bearings in the rollers were worn.  When the belt was on and the engine was running everything looked like it was rolling smoothly and there were no odd noises coming from the rollers. I'm relieved that I caught the wobbly rollers before one of them failed while I was driving.   Getting the power steering hose out proved to be a bit of work (4 hours), but replacing the rollers was a simple 30 min job!  My car has about 108,000. miles on it, the belt rollers I removed looked to be the originals.

  7. Installed some Headrest Wind Deflectors I got thru 9Apart and a 3 Spoke Steering Wheel I bought from a local who is breaking his wrecked Boxster S.

I'm pleased with the look of both items, but had hoped the Headrest Wind Deflectors would be more effective.  When I acquired the car the clear center piece was included, but the headrest pieces were missing.  I hoped adding the headrest pieces would make a noticeable difference, but they don't seem to make any difference.  Guess it's a good thing my hair is disappearing on its own!!

I feel like the combined look of these changes adds at least 20 IHP (imagined horsepower), so it's worth the cost...!

  8. Don't give up on it too quickly!

My car came with the hardtop option.  Yes, the car does look different with it installed, but I've come to like the look of the hardtop.   I live in Seattle with a climate very similar to yours and I find the hardtop is a VERY nice option during the 6 to 8 rainy/cool months we have every year.  The hardtop keeps the car very snug and dry inside.

I've had a number of non-Porsche people ask me "What kind of car is that?" when I've had the hardtop on.  It certainly gives the car a different look.
