  1. 981-drain.jpg

Pulled the panels off my 2014 981 today and removed these.  The blocked two are the upper valves, one from each side.  The lower ones did have some crud in but not as much.

I'd been hoping until today that they were clear as when I poured water in it did flow out.

Broke one of the 4 black clips that attach the panel to the door threshold.  In Raj's video he levers these loose using a trim tool by inserting the tool under the panel itself.  7 of the 8 popped up ok.  I was using what looked like exactly the same tool he did.  For anyone else following his video to remove the panels - either just the rear or completely - I reckon it might be less stressful on the clips if a fork ended removal tool is inserted between the clip and the panel to pop it up - rather than inserted under the panel itself.

  2. Resolution with OPC this morning.

Car had been with them from March-Dec 2020.  They did a health check on it in March and then didn't service until October.

Agreed that the the two clocks were out of sync due to this and no need to service until Oct, warranty unaffected.

Queried about oil condition monitoring.  Advised that 981 does have this and that it's not just based on number of starts etc, it does monitor oil condition.  Will give an "Oil Change Required" warning rather than Service Required though.

Thanks to all who have responded, even if I didn't agree with you it's at least helped me work through in my head what I thought the issue was!

  3. It hasn't done multiple short runs in my ownership (since Dec 20) Could count the times the oil has not reached full operating temp on one hand.

    Kept in a garage.

One thing I didn't mention above is that I remember looking at the service reminder date on the car not long after I bought it, it showed April 2022 - I didn't understand why given I was expecting Oct 2022 (or 20,000) but I obviously chose to ignore it the time.  So unless it was guessing what the oil condition would be in future, it surely must be just a clock ticking away...

And if calling for a service early because of oil condition is a 981 thing, is there anyone out there who has experienced this?

Your choice, you get to over-rule the computer but is  the issue here actually an oil change now, or and oil change in what 12 - 16 weeks?  Your car, your rules, but if it was me - the "service me" indicator would bug me enough to make it go away one way or another.

    It's 25 weeks, nearly 6 months.

The Intermediate service timer is advising a service requirement in October 2022.

If this isn't an oil quality service decision by the car and is just a timer issue as I suspect, if I went along with it I'd be getting it serviced now and in 6 months time it will be asking for another service and will continue to ask for two services within 6 months every 2 years!

Most recent cars "calc" / estimates oil change based on number of starts and short runs - my Focus does the same, as did the Audi I had previously - theory being that oil degrades over time and if only used for short runs, it will not have got up to temp and will be holding more "nasties".

Your choice, you get to over-rule the computer but is  the issue here actually an oil change now, or and oil change in what 12 - 16 weeks?  Your car, your rules, but if it was me - the "service me" indicator would bug me enough to make it go away one way or another.

If the 981 is one of most cars that does this calculation then I'd be accepting of the need for it to be done.  However nobody on here yet seems to be suggesting that the 981 does this or has had this experience.

And it's asking for a Maintenance service exactly 4 years after the last Maintenance service which suggests this is just a timer event that has not been reset to take account of the later and late Intermediate service.

Anyway, I'll report back when I've got to a conclusion with the OPC.

  6. I'd be bloody annoyed if it's 1, but I'm not sure I'd ever find that out.

No track days.  Average fuel consumption since I've had it is 32.1 which indicates how it's driven most of the time so I reckon it's not likely to be 2 even if there is a means of checking the oil condition built into the car (they haven't seen it so no chance they have stuck an external thing in)

It could be 3 but I'll add a 4 which is I spoke to a service adviser who didn't understand what the issue was. I've chased them today but they haven't had the courtesy to get back to me...

  7. Incidentally I'm a gambler when it comes to paying for extended warranties, be it a tv, washing machine, phone, car or anything really.

Don't know by how much but I'm well ahead financially using this approach.

Shouldn't be writing this though should I.  Be back on here next year reporting how much my new pdk box has cost outside of the warranty I didn't extend in December this year 😂

  8. I've emailed them with a summary, see where we go from there.

I'm assuming the Maintenance and Intermediate service clocks in the car just tick away independently and what should have happened is resetting of the Maintenance clock when it was Intermediate serviced on 15/10/2020.

  9. Thanks for replying @daz05

Had missed the air filters requirement in the book.  There's no tick box for that in the maintenance record but they could/should have been done at 6 years at the 2020 service.

I asked the sales guy the reason for the servicing going over the 2 years limit.  He didn't know and assumed previous owner hadn't bothered to service it before trading it. I didn't push for any further detail and had decided it wasn't going to stop me buying.  They assured me that the warranty is full, I have that in writing with no qualifications.

I guess the issue I have after reading your response and thinking further, is that if I ignore the car requesting maintenance on 28/4/22 and a month later I need something under warranty, I may have invalidated it.  Which I can now see is caused by the late Intermediate service in Oct 2020 reducing the time to the next Maintenance service from 24 months to 18 months.  I'll talk to the OPC but I'll bet that will be their line on it.

  10. My s/h record book for my 2014 2.7 is as follows, all completed by same OPC:

    20/2/16  Intermediate & brake fluid change @ 8511

    28/4/18  Maintenance & brake fluid change @ 16740

    31/8/18   Spark plugs  @ 17724

15/10/20 Intermediate, drive belt and brake fluid change @ 26265

I purchased from the servicing OPC Dec 2020, mileage slightly above the last Intermediate service.

I'm now on 30258 and car is asking for Maintenance in 10 days which I assume is 4 years on from the 28/4/18 Maintenance...?  The Intermediate is showing as required October 2022 or in 16100

Aside from the all the check the horn, windscreen wipers etc etc, does it actually need anything doing to it?  If not can I ignore the Service warning until the Intermediate is required in October 2022?  (ignoring any debate about interim oil changes...)

I'm intending to go to an independent and will not extend the 2 year warranty issued when I purchased.  I'm aware that this will invalidate the last 7/8 weeks of the warranty.

    Thanks for any views/insights folks.

It’s all about personal choice and what the owners eye wants their car to look like. I’ve had the X73 kit retro fitted along with the PSE. I also then after deliberating long and hard had the callipers professionally painted red. Yep it’s a 2.7 a d a lot of people would possibly think I’m really wanted an S model but no I just enjoy the look and wanted the 2.7 for my own reasons. I also had the 2.7 987 Gen1 over an S

    https://postimg.cc/fJBk2Cdv

Good colour choice for a white car.  Likewise, I'd do mine red if I wanted to regardless of it being a 2.7.  However as its Guards Red I think a contrasting colour will look good.

I've no want for a 3.4, 2.7 has all the performance I need and some.  I get a load of enjoyment just bimbling in it trying not to hold up the traffic 😁

Interestingly, Boxster designers have consistantly challange the deeply held ideas, aesthetics and traditions of "twin exhausts" . If you like twin pipes, fit them and I personally would not worry if they were an option or not. Nice pics btw 👍

Any more details on the source for that just out of nothing but interest...?

I wasn't desperate to change it, twins just look better to my eyes on some cars.  But a bit cr*p on others like the 2 sets on a Golf R for instance.

Brake caliper painting next when the weather gets a bit warmer, black or silver. Leaning towards black I think (wheels are silver 18s)

  13. Swap completed, from this:

    2T6X5hM.jpg

    To this:

    S4P5MrC.jpg

I did get the car on stands to have a go at the swap myself but the clamp bolts connecting the silencers to the cats were quite corroded - one side needs undoing to allow the old tail to be removed and the new one fitted.  Consequently I gave up pretty quickly and paid for an hour's labour at a local exhaust specialist I've used before.  This proved a good decision as one bolt broke and the other they were unable to undo, so had to extract both using tools and expertise I don't have.  If I'd had more of a go at it I'd probably have finished up there in any case but with bloody knuckles and a couple of hours wasted crawling about on a cold garage floor with the car on stands.

Much improved to my eyes.  As these were an optional fit to the 2.7 I think it's an ok upgrade to make.

Thanks to Greenman for the offer and sale at a reasonable price and getting them to me so quickly 👍

As above - taking them off might be a real pain as you may need to loosen other fasteners in order to prise the two sides apart to get that cross-piece out, and Porsche exhaust fasteners are notorious for not playing ball. I didn't want to lie under the car swearing and paid my indie to fit them, they then charged me two hours because of all the frozen fasteners they had to deal with just to get it in.

Yeah I'm prepared for a bit of a fight when I change it.  Did a 986 back box swap a few years back, there was a lot of swearing 😁

These were used for approx 12k miles and have been in my shed for the past 5 years.  They are (I think) the steel finished tips.  The tips havn’t got much pitting but obviously need a polish up with a buffing wheel/autosol or similar if you want a mirror finish (got to admit I leave mine to develop an even sooty coating which after about 6 months just looks like the black finished product).  The fastenings look a bit rusty but this is just surface rust, I’ll get a socket on them tomorrow and loosen and retighten the nuts just to ensure they are fine.  These haven’t been cleaned up at all other than the removal of the majority of the soot on the tips when I removed them 5 years ago, so they look at their worst currently.

So you are aware.  To fit these you might have to loosen one side of your exhaust at the cat to give you enough wiggle room to get them on. It you do have to do that then it raises the issue of the state of the bolts on the joint.

let me know if you are interested and we will work out a price.

I believe 981 fit 987.1 (different engines). I bought a 987.2 (Cayman R) tailpipe and fitted it, and the 981 has the same engine as the 987.2. But I recall 718 has the 4 cyl engine so not sure if they changed the exhaust dimensions in any way...  The usual way is to at least check how the part number starts.

Wondered whether 987s would fit, seen a couple of ads stating 987/981

Don't really want it sticking out any further though 😄

  17. Thanks iborguk 👍

OPC parts guy didn't give me a part number or advise type but I wouldn't be surprised if that was for chrome.  Which I don't need, stainless preferred.  Not black.

And thanks for the links hadn't seen those.  Need to widen my search criteria obviously 🙂

Wonder if the Germany locate item will also attract some post brexit import tax...

  18. Single on my 981 currently.

Non PSE obviously.  I'm in a small minority who are quite happy with the sound of the standard system and have no want for PSE so fitting that as a solution is not for me.

However aestheically I much prefer the look of the twin pipes.  Unfortunately Porsche want £618 for the twin tailpipes which is an option I won't be taking.

There's an ebay seller, Cybox, regularly advertising a twin conversion for £275 but the pipes seem to protrude too much which puts me off.  Anyone fitted one and could give feedback please..?

Anyone know of anyother reasonably priced solutions out there please?  (everything else I've managed to find via google seems to be priced north of £275)

    Thanks!

  19. Didn't find it after further searching.

Couldn't leave it without the button.  Bought a complete unit from the bay for £50 plus postage.  Rather than try and pry the button out and risk breaking it, decided to swap the unit out - which was straightforward and took about 30 mins.

Anticipated it may need programming as Greenman suggested above, plus there's a sticker on bottom of replacement with numbers next to SW and HW prefixes.  And a 2013 date, car is 2014.  However, all working so no coding/programming required 🙂.  (only have standard 4 functions though - Sport, ASR, Spoiler & Auto Stop/Start.  Plus roof switches of course.)

Outside of running costs that's my only expenditure in the 3,500 miles of my first year of ownership.  Happy with that!

  20. Thanks so far guys.  Christopher2110, likewise I'd be surprised if it's not in the car but if it is it's winning at hide and seek so far.  The only way I can think it's got out is if it landed on me and then came out with me when i got out, but even that seems unlikely...  I'll have to get the seats out I think.

Thanks for that link iborguk, hadn't seen that.  An expensive solution to a missing £0.25 piece of plastic though 😄

Didn't expect it to be programmable Greenman although not surprised.  However may not be need programming as I don't have any options fitted that operate from the console..?   If it is I could maybe just extract the piece that's lost and insert/attach.  (will dm you re your console switch if it's not found when I get the seats out - thanks for the offer)

Maybe I could laser print one.  Not that I have a laser printer 😄

I haven't actually checked with Porsche to see if it's available separately, I will do but I'm not hopeful.

  21. 102410714_roofswitches6.jpg.1798ca937c6e8581bd7d11d3218cc601.jpg

The raise roof button has popped out and disappeared from my switch.  I didn't see it make its bid for freedom so no idea which direction it went.  Switch still functions.

Spent 30 unsuccessful minutes looking for it with a torch with seats moved through all position and I'm fairly certain it's not in the car.  But still thinking I should remove the seats to be more sure.  Looks fairly straightforward to do, anything I should know from anyone who has done it?

Alternatively, anyone had the same problem and found a sensible cost replacement...?

    Thanks

  22. There's a photo of my home made drain clearer (similar principle to mneil)  in daz05's thread here:

Worked fine for me so may well not need compressed air to clear.  What's probably more important is getting the right size of plastic pipe to fit snugly in the drain.

Note too as daz05 points out, there are two drains on each side.
