Thanks mate, my finger is hovering over the buy it now button on Ali Express for the Joyeauto kit at £336.64, plus there's probably a discount code for an extra discount as well:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001334601760.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_home.0.0.185b354caVsYtg&pdp_npi=2%40dis!USD!US %24599.00!US %24365.39!US %24599.00!!!!%40!12000015729663300!sh

I think this is the one I will go for, and it says compatible with the CDR 3.1 :thumbsup_still:

I can also recommend the NM Automotive kit: https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto

Don't be too cocky, I had a B5 Passat estate once that had blocked front scuttle drains and let water in through the front bulkhead a few days after I bought it.  It was then that I realised the problem and significance of drains on cars, whether fixed or soft top.

My first Porsche was a 924 (stop sniggering at the back there).  The drains in the scuttle used to get blocked with leaves and rainwater would accumulate.  When you went round a corner fast the water would slop into the heater intake.  The result was a cloud of steam that completely obscured the windscreen and a few pints of cold water on your feet and ankles.  It took some presence of mind to avoid crashing.

  3. I have a Brodit holder that fits on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel. It's quite a neat installation, but trying to use a small touch-screen with my left hand in a shaking car while watching the road ahead is more than I can manage.  So my phone mostly stays in my pocket.

I've just acquired a new phone that doesn't fit the holder.  Brodit don't offer a holder for it, so the whole thing is going to have to come out.

    Hi,

I have a 987.2 with PCM 3.0 and would like to add the nmautomotive carplay kit. I am based near Cambridge but willing to travel if anyone has a recommendation for someone who could fit this for me? If anyone has had this done and also has a rough cost as well that would be really appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Tom

I can't help, but I'd be interested to know if you find anyone, as I'm located in the same area as you.

I hope you know that you're supposed to display UK instead of GB since last September?  See https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates/flags-symbols-and-identifiers

    Why?

“Changing the national identifier from GB to the UK symbolises our unity as a nation and is part of a wider move towards using the UK signifier across government. We notified the UN of our intention to make these changes in July and have been working with the sector to implement the change,” a spokesman for the Department of Transport said.

It's good to know that our taxes are being spent on something really worthwhile, and that the DOT has been "working* with the sector".  Do they also plan to recode all multi-currency systems in the world to change GBP to UKP?

    * for very small values of working

  6. Drove the loan car back to the OPC in heavy traffic on A14/M11, and decided I hated it.  The clutch had a long travel, and seemed to be very grabby. I dare say I'm a bit out of practice, plus it always takes a while to get used to a new transmission. But the fun on back roads doesn't compensate for the hard work in traffic.

  7. I'm dithering over the idea of ordering a new GTS 4.0.  As well as the furious man-maths in progress, I'm asking myself whether to go for manual or PDK.

When you look at the small number of used GTS 4.0s that are advertised, the curious thing is that the majority are manual, which I understand is very much not the case with Boxsters in general.  Of course this is a totally unrepresentative sample - they're mostly very low mileage cars for sale at a price that's probably more than new, so one has to assume that they weren't bought by people who intended to drive them.

The answer, of course, is that you should go for whatever transmission you like most.  Until a couple of days ago that would definitely have been PDK.  But I'm currently driving a loaner with manual transmission, and I find I quite enjoy it.  Presumably because of {mumble} decades driving manuals, shifting seems very natural in a way it doesn't with the PDK paddles.  The only problem is a lack of pull at low revs, which I guess is something you learn to deal with.  Or is it just something you get with a 4-cylinder 2.0 turbo, that a 4.0 flat six wouldn't suffer from?

    Views?

  8. Water beading like this is commonly taken as an indication of how effective a roof treatment is.  Which is odd, because as far as I know the waterproof layer is underneath the canvas exterior.

Can anyone who's owned a convertible from new confirm whether water beads like this on a brand-new untreated roof?

    I didn't think that the 4S's were N0 rated?

According to KwikFit, Blackcircles, Etyres the 4S is N0.  I'm trying to stick to suppliers that quote the N rating.  Trouble is, these sites tend to be a proprietary skin on a common application, so concensus doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

  10. I dispair of ever understanding tyre numbers.  Tyre sources that include OEM rating (e.g. KwikFit) are advertising Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 265/35 20Y (99) and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 265/35 20Y (95), both as Porsche N0.  What does the number in parentheses signify?

According to my MOT failure certificate, I too need two 265/35/ZR20.  What does 'ZR' signify here?  Is Y rating equivalent to ZR?

After my experiences with it in now thinking the Fabsil made the mold worse by trapping moisture under it... The mold always came back, even after scrubbing it with every chemical known to kill the stuff.

I've had good results using Milton to remove and prevent mold.

I can't remember what I paid maybe £850 or so but I think sub £800 would be lucky from an OPC. Just pay the price and enjoy a day out in one of their cars to make up for it.

Yeah, I got a day out in a horrible orange Mini.  Thanks, Porsche Cambridge.

I thought the only options over BP's 97 Ultimate was Shell Vpower 99 or Tesco's Momentum.

There's apparently a new 99 choice for anyone with an Esso nearby :)

Tesco Momentum is a mythical fuel as far as I'm concerned.  No Tesco I visit seems to offer it.  And Shell stations seem to be vanishing from the motorways.  Returning from Wales a few weeks ago I kept driving in to services where the sign on the motorway said Shell, to find some weird own-brand, and no high octane.  Eventually found it at an Esso station.

That link leads to a page that includes a form where you select your make and model to check compatibility.  For 981 Boxster S, it said "not compatible".  Checking the PIAA web site seems to give the same result - the only Boxsters in the model dropdown are 986 and 987.

And also, I would be asking them why the ignition barrel looks so knackered on an otherwise pristine car.  Looks like someone has tried to start it with a massive screwdriver....

I think the apparent damage around the ignition barrel is actually a reflection in the chrome surround.

  16. I just watched the fitting video on the Zunsport site, and I'd hope their grilles are better than their video technique.  They have a big floodlight to illuminate the work, but most of the time it's shining into the camera lens, so the activity you need to see is in darkness.
