does anyone have experience of the Gravity exhaust system STAINLESS REAR SILENCER EXHAUST BACK BOX FOR PORSCHE BOXSTER 986 2.5 2.7 3.2 96-
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353775465486
I have recently installed a full SS system and that rear silencer was part of it. Its very loud/drone between 1500 - 3000 revs and I can't live with it, in its defence its not expensive and it sounds great when you are over 3000 revs.
So the original silencer is going back on I cleaned it up and found a welder who could be bothered to spend time on it on the seams. Im putting it back on the car on Monday and hopefully it will be fine.
The original silencer feels about 4x times heavier than the Gravity one shown, I think it must be totally empty inside🤣

I swapped out the original 986 shifter for a short shifter and it was a lot tighter more exact change but it also felt a bit notchity (don't think thats even a word!) so I changed to the 987 shifter and I like that much more its not notchy and feels right, it improved the overall experience of driving/changing gear, go for it.

Where did you get the Porsche sticker from?
I got the sticker from Bergvill ordered same time as getting the wiring connector from them. Have attached a couple of pics. @Fat Rat when fitting the microphone I just drilled out one of the empty switch blanks to just less than diameter of microphone and slotted it in (see pic) I used the top right one which was a blank, it works pretty good.

Seems cheap as others want up to ,€262? Bergvill.
Thoughts please. 😉
Hi
I bought one from them a couple of weeks back it turned up within a week no extra import costs etc. Fitted it on Friday, works great, great fit looks good I used the loom connector from Bergvill couldn't be simpler to do. I found Tore at Bergvill very helpful, also got the PORSCHE sticker that goes over the Continental, looks great. The phone connected straight away and works very well much better than I had hoped.

Premium version now ordered after watching this morning’s thunderstorm!
You won't regret it, mine has been great in all weathers, not even the storms we have had last year could shift it. They are a great fit and really up to the job👍

so left hand end in a UK RHD car?
Yes it's on the left side, open door fully to get to the screws (can't remember think they are torx) the sensor is just behind the vent, very easy to replace, a man of your skills I reckon 10 minutes!

Thanks for the comments/suggestions. I did think it could be a fire hazard so that idea is consigned it to the bin!
Will just have to improve our memory for now and try burning the clutch out! (joking)
Cheers

Early 2.5 with rms annoying drip, the clutch was replaced by a previous owner and has only done approx 10,000 miles but don't know if oil seal was changed then (approx 6years or so ago). So I just want to catch the drip and stop it staining the driveway, both drivers of the car are forgetful and collectively we have driven over about 5 drip trays (oops! you'd think we would remember!)
So I was thinking of fabricating a plastic or aluminium under tray with an absorbent pad in it that could be changed (see video)to go under the section where the drip is, the rest of the under trays are in place and fine. Do you think this is a viable idea or am I missing something?

I fitted one of these,
they do 5 speed manual as well in my early 986 I got the orange led (so it would match the other orange displays) and wired it in to ashtray light. Fitted great and looks good can post a pic if you like?

Thanks, any downside to leaving it off, given the black cable was fouling on it?
I left that piece out of my 986 when I installed 987 shifter it's been fine since I did it. (I think its been in at least 18months)

the 986 is probably one of the last analogue cars which still works in a context that is 25 years on from when it first hit the road.
This is exactly why I keep mine.
Also when i have parked up somewhere, I always look back at the car and the overall look of the car never ceases to put a smile on my face!

My mileage is quite erratic, over the 3years of ownership did 1100 in 1st year 4200 in 2nd and last year 2200 perhaps its down to the amount of sunshine in a given year?
So far in 2022 it hasn't moved!

Coolant Cap
in 986
After a drive yesterday, opened boot and there was some water on boot lid above oil/ water filler, carpet dry and beneath cover where bleed valve is located also dry and no corrosion. So I know the cap part no. has been upgraded from .01 to a .04 number but my cap is .00 so is this cap the original from when car was new if so its not done bad for 24 years and 133333 miles!
So are OPC the best place to get a new cap?

My calipers were well past their best, went for red and I think they look great so its personal, its your car, your choice.

2 new rear tyres today
& came home to my Amazon £12 remote central locking kit. Really easy to wire, it took me longer to remove the passenger seat! I think I may have an issue within my drivers side lock mechanism though....
Removed the passenger seat to get access to the Immobiliser module:
Where all the magic happens...So, as you can see below, you splice 4 wires (lock/unlock signals & L&R indicators), ground 2 more, find a permanent 12v and earth. It’s a 15 minute job once the seat is out the way.
Module loom, I taped up the unused wires:
Result!! 👍🏻This looks like a great idea, definitely keep posted how you get on with it regarding any glitches etc. didn't even realise you could do this, thanks for posting

Fitted short shifter and got all the trim back in, waiting for new gear knob to arrive to finish it off. It all went pretty well had to order a new cable end adjuster for the bottom of the gear lever, the old one was well worn surprised it hadn't popped off sooner. The short shift has improved the gear change for me, much less throw and straight in to gear, like it a lot.

Driven it!😎

My only defence was you would have done the same if you had seen the body and perfectly tailored tight pants the girl was wearing - it was an amazing sight even if she was probably only 17!
Just been out to the car park - the tyres protected the rim perfectly ! <huge sigh of relief>
Have you never heard of that song "Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel" I would have cried if that was mine and it got scraped, you were lucky!

You should always replace those in pairs.
OPC Reading forgot to advise me this , and gave me the 2nd one for free
Is that true? and why? because I replaced one on Saturday and my local OPC didn't say anything when they ordered the part and didn't say so when I picked it up?
What have YOU done to your 986 today ?

Yes, I have several worthless Ming vases around the house, the trouble is they are too priceless to actually use!😕
