Each remote transponder has a fixed number of times it can be used, after which it's basically dead. One of my keys is in that situation. It'll still open and start the car - I just have to be quick to disable the alarm.
Very unlikely to happen to two simultaneously though.
2001 model so if the previous owners used them and swapped them around (as I have) then that’s a distinct possibility…

Tried loads of times. I’ve opened manually, put it in the ignition, taken it out, pressed for 10 seconds yet none of this synchs either keys 🤔

I know this has probably been done to death however I’ve recently had to renew my key fobs as not only were they not opening the car remotely they were contributing to the setting off of my alarm (see my recent other post).
I got two new fobs, had the keys cut and transponder transferred to the new units and both worked a treat-I’m now a happy camper!
since then I’ve not really used the car however yesterday evening I was on my way out and not one but both sets of keys failed to open remotely.
I’m at a loss as to why they are no longer working, batteries are brand new and the light illuminates when all three/six buttons are pressed.
Any ideas as why would they stop working?
surely if they were not going to work them shouldn’t they have not worked immediately after?
I’m stumped guys!

I decided to call my breakdown service out. Top bloke came out and resolved the initial issue in approximately 2 minutes as he went to the fuse box, applied a battery powered live whilst clamping onto the door hinge with the negative and pop the bonnet opened. I have a mobile version and could have done the same.
I asked how this was possible and was advised that the independent power source simply powered the mechanism. Great news as provided I have my pack charged up I will always be good…but where to keep it as there’s no space in the internal cabin and I won’t be putting it in the frunk!
He advised me to put a tape over the internal movement sensors as I’m still getting an intermittent chirp sound which, when locked becomes more solid.
Also for some reason when the roof goes down although it appears that it has fully deployed he noticed that there was a quarter of an inch gap so it’s not fully down.
I'm also going to take the lights out to see if there actually is an emergency cable and if so re-route it to the towing eye.
He also checked the both keys and the spare wouldn’t work at all when pressed and the one I use only worked intermittently so even though I can open the car the transponder/car still thinks there’s an issue hence the chirp sound.
I’m going to get the auto key cutter to cut me some new keys and get to the bottom of the soft top issue which may be as simple as the carpeted engine cover area not having been put back correctly by the chap who swapped out the water pump 2.5 weeks ago…
thank you for all your contributions though guys!

I think mine will be tucked behind the driver’s side headlamp (UK)….my only issue will be fishing it out as I can’t take my front right wheel off as the locking wheel but is in the frunk…I’ll need to jack up both sides, full lock and see what happens…
-
Yes it does have two release levers but they are different to the ones in this video (no gap) and having removed the carpeted area near the fuse box I can confirm that there is no black cable…I wish that it was there as this would have been easy

I stand corrected however the 2001 S still appears to have far too many quirks for my liking…but I guess that’s Boxster life!
I’ve found this which may clear things up for me…getting to it with my big hands may be problematic though…

Are there any guys out there who have a 2001 S and have overcome this issue?
I'm thinking that as this was a “crossover” year as they were building up to the launch of the 987 that perhaps there are some oddities on this model as everywhere I’ve looked the release cord with the loop is not present.
I am definitely going to get this rewired so it goes through the towing eye …. -
Unfortunately the 2001 S version has no gap whatsoever so there is no way to access it I’m afraid.
-
O/S being the driver’s side in the UK? I’ve looked on both doors and there is no thin wire running anywhere I’m afraid…I wish it was!
-
I’ll have to let you know when I eventually gain access. I’m going back out again to investigate near the fuse box. If I have no joy I’ll investigate both wheel arches further. Would be easier if I could remove the wheels but guess where the locking wheel nut is…the damn frunk!
note to me to ensure that it is kept in the car’s cabin at all times from now on….

Thanks for your input my friend. I’ve just checked the towing eye and it’s not been relocated there. I can’t access the lights to check as i cannot currently open the frunk.
I’ve seen a few comments about the cable being accessed where the electronic release is however there is no facility to access them on mine.
I’ve also heard of a cable being near/behind the fuse board which I have checked but I’ll check again.
I fully intend to disconnect the battery on the siren once I gain access!
-
I’ve just gone out again and looked in both the left wheel arch and the right, unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be anything of that description.
I’m finding that the 2001 S is quirky and always seems to be slightly different from other models so are there any guys out there with the same model?
if so can someone pop the frunk and tell me where the release cable runs to?
Once again with the Boxster someting so simple is turning into a nightmare…
-
Thanks, I’ve looked in that vicinity but couldn’t find it. Was/is it the wire with a loop on it as described by Porsche? I’ll look again as it has to be there. Is there a possibility that it’s been relocated?
-
Does anyone know where the frunk emergency release switch is on a 2001 Boxster S? To cut a long story short the alarm went off in the early hours and I eventually had to disconnect both battery terminals forgetting in my sleep deprived state that the electric release mechanism can’t work without power.
I rang Porsche this morning and they stated that a silver pull cord with a loop should be able to be accessed by removing the lining of the front wheel arch, looked at both today and it’s nowhere to be found.
I'm desperate now as I can’t get the car to an auto electrician to sort out the alarm shenanigans and on a wider scale can’t use the damn thing at all.
please help guys!

I’ve just changed the pump, tensioners thermostat belt etc all in an attempt to rid myself of a very annoying squeal that only happens after the car gets up to temperature as it’s absent at start up.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this?
I’m at my wits end!
