  1. Hi all

so turns out it’s not a quirk, after another visit to the OPC and taking a technician out on a test drive (oh er) Porsche Cambridge have finally agreed there is something wrong, talking to the tech he’s never heard of this issue before on the 981 but had similar on a 987 where there is an issue with the throttle body valve, alternatively it maybe an issue with the vario cam !

anyway a week later they’ve ordered a new throttle body and that’ll be here Thursday, they’ll then see if that’s fixed the issue, if not…

Fingers crossed I’m taking the Boxster to Bicester Scramble on Sunday

  2. Thanks for the feedback, this is a great community for help and advice, I was starting to think either I bought a duffer or I’m a old duffer (I’m certainly getting there according to my kids!)

it seems it’s one of the quirks of the 981s’

  3. They’ve changed the spark plugs, still not sure it’s fixed it but it’s a very subtle flutter under 3k revs, they’ve kept the job open so if I’m not happy I can still claim under warranty.

maybe they do all do that, above 3k it flies

  4. So, OPC rang with an update, still can’t find anything wrong (no codes)! I did ask if they’ve run diagnostics whilst driving but they didn’t know just kept referring to the fact there are no fault codes.

They think it might need to “learn my driving style” so could I do another 500 miles and if it still does it bring it back, I told them I’ve done over 1500 miles in it since I’ve had it, think it would have learnt by now!

They’re now going to get their gold tech to look at it and call me, I can feel an argument coming on tomorrow

  5. 5 minutes ago, Paul P said:

They need to log the values for throttle position sensor, cam and crank  position and other mixture, fuel, and throttle related values in real time.

I really hate “no codes” as an excuse. that just means the car didn’t think anything wrong. A bit like a temp sensor that reads -20 to plus 50 in 2 mins or a lateral motion sensor that reads 2g when standing still.  Car doesn’t think that’s unreasonable unless someone programmed it to think that way. It’s just  that is what it saw and responds accordingly.

Plugging in after the event in these kind of cases is like burning a building to the ground and then asking someone what channel the tv was on three weeks ago.

Live data for key engine params when “flutter and shove” occurs will tell them 100 times more than “computer says no”  and in my opinion they should be all over that, check the codes for sure but be ready to deal with “nothing reported”

Thanks for that, helpful summary I’ll ask them tomorrow what they’re doing to try and identify the problem

  6. Hi all,

so bit of an update, OPC tech took it out and then put it on computer to see if there was any codes, they couldn’t find anything wrong, they then asked their “lead” driver (senior delivery/pick up driver) to take it out, following a number of calls and his test drive he confirms there is in his words a “flutter and then a bit of a shove”

still no codes so they’ve got the car for most of next week to see if they can track down the error.

Can’t fault Cambridge OPC for their investigation as they could easily have said nowt wrong mate off you go

so fingers crossed they’ll track down the issue and I’ll soon get it back.

  7. Update

got the car back today, amazing job by Porsche Cambridge, both doors fixed, they also went over the rest of the car and touched in any stone chips. Full valet and polish. Also discovered the car has extended Porsche warranty until end of Sept, question is do I extend the warranty!?

only downside the loan car was merc A class diesel 🤐(first world problems!)

  8. So took it to OPC today, they can’t see any chips on the passenger door and have said both doors are original paint, so corrosion on one side likely to be a fault, they have submitted a warranty claim to Porsche so may end up with one door under warranty and the other I’ll have to pay for (I did argue the “chip” in the paint may have been caused by the corrosion bubbling through.

As a positive I’ll get a courtesy car whilst OPC fix it so that’ll hopefully be a fun car

  9. Hi all,

following me giving the car (2014 981s) a wash I found a small paint blister (about 5mm)on the drivers door, I took it to an OPC who said it’s caused by a stone chip so won’t be covered by corrosion warranty, they’ve  given me a quote for £700 to fix and respray the door, I’ve now found a smaller one on the passenger door, it’s metallic black so very difficult to see unless your really looking) so the questions are, is the OPC stance reasonable that it’s not covered by warranty? If I don’t get it fixed will it get worse, I think the doors are aluminium, if I take it to a body shop will it be easy to blend in if they do a localised repair compared to a whole door respray?

sorry for the number of questions

    thanks

    neal
