First chance I’ve had to take a pick of all 3 current Porsches in the same place…..Air, Water and Fire ………….

That's a nice looking driveway and not the block-paving.

Just jumping in here without knowing your history.

Did you have the new control unit programmed into the car. This needs doing before the roof will work.

Hi - thx and yes, I have PoCom so can see it is all set-up and re-program.  There may be a short somewhere in the loom, I just cannot work it out.  All the actuators work so relays are fine, the microswitches in the latch are fine, have changed the roof gearboxes and it still doesn't want to work as it should.  That and the heated seats which are coded in, but will not light up - either on the dash either any more.

So will take her to Tonbridge and see what they have to say, will put her on the classic register at the same time too.

So this weekend I have had the HVAC unit out and seen that there was a bent pin that explains why the heater stopped working when I replaced the temp and fan slides.

Still cannot work why the roof or the heated seats do not work,  On PIWIS all is correct, i.e all the options are set.  I've tried cleaning the rear control unit connectors with vinegar, salt, water, baking soda etc, but still getting an error on the dash, which surprises me as the fuses are good.

    Any help....really appreciated...

    Karl.

Also had the passenger seat out, rear control unit out, clean up of RCU, the central comp can still not see the RCU, when I bought two new ones....Baby is off to Tonbridge Porsche...fingers crossed

    No regrets here,

yes it's loud, focused and totally unrefined. but as a drivers car it's in a different league to the boxster. the steering feel is amazing, goes where you point it.

even been an n/a (with some engine work. cams, porting etc) it's far faster than the boxster it's replaced, 840kg weight helps that alot though.

downsides are it's not overly comfy, no heated seats etc. but for a Sunday morning hooning machine I'll manage 😆

    Thanks -

I think that gives me with the later posts more than I have asked.  I applaud your response, whilst that nagging voice tells me, "you love Porsche", and I do.  I had another go at the roof, PIWIS all setting correct, micro-switches correct, etc.. Still telling me on the dash that the roof is broken.  2 new rear control units and many resets later am about to give up on the boxster, though I love the car...Will take her to Porsche Tonbridge, have her registered as a classic and see if they can fix the roof, once and for all.

    sold it 🫢

as much as I've enjoyed the boxster ownership I've now moved it on.

I'll still hang around though as I rather enjoy Lukes Dales runs 🤷‍♂️

First pic is prettier than the second, but do tell after a fortnight are you regretting the decision or is the Exige worth the change?  I love my 987.1, but am plagued with roof issues, trying to work out whether a Cayman or something else is the best answer :)

  7. A Zunsport discount is mentioned - silly question time - how do you get the discount?  Is there a code or do you need to call Zunsport to get it?  I've just had the cooling system refreshed and want to protect that investment.

    Thanks.

  8. I have had both the 987.1 early and later transmission boxes apart today and see that the micro-switches are indeed different, earlier operates a lever on to two switches, later has two switches driven directly by the drive gear.  Oh and the plug is the other way up which I think was mentioned eaarlier.

Does anybody know whether the 986 versions have the same micro-switches as the early 987? Or even are the 986 and early 987 hood transmissions even identical?  They look exceedingly similar.

It does look like my gearbox is out of step with the motor too - the microswitch itself looks fine though - gave it a clean, I wonder how they got it to the correct state when fixing ricofs?

  9. Thanks - the switch seems to be fine, it's rolling the windows down whenever I unlatch and isn't sticking  - will give it a once over and a good clean to make sure - don't get why the motor is winding back post closure.   It reaches completely closed, close the latch, windows come up and then rolls back for a couple of seconds which and gives the error.

Are there other sensors/switches that might need checking too - how does it know that the "Top Not in Limit Position"

Would you know where that switch/sensor is? I assuming that the top needs to reach that to close the windows.

  10. Hi -

A different issue to ones I've had before with the roof.  Somebody I am sure may know what is going on!

First - the roof is in working order and up until it went in to the garage - for a long time [ Issues sourcing parts apparently - post market exhaust for a 2006 3.2s],

    - I have no warning lights or issues, but tried opening the roof and the windows roll and then the up/down button doesn't work - now it's get wierd.

    - If I release the roof latch before I turn on the ignition, it opens fine, when closing it gets to the end position, I latch and then the motor rolls open for 2 or 3 seconds and then I get

first - Closing convertible top and then covertible top failure.

My hypothesis is that my garage removed the battery or it went flat with the roof open.

Anybody seen - and does anybody know how to reset the roof to stop that roll-back with an well placed battery disconnect or some other means?

I was convinced that the Rear control unit was toast until finding that it worked by unlatching ahead of ignition - so am stumped.

    many thanks in advance

  11. I put a pair of yokohamas on the back of my car, no P2,3 or 4 available at the time and am not sure if I really regret it.  The front need changing and I am naturally gravitating to the P4, but honestly what should I be shodding my car with?

The Yoko on the back seem okay, not problem with grip compared to the the P2s I replaced.  Any Yoko horror stories?

Is there an unwritten rule that Michelin or Pirelli P0 only, or are there other good tyres for these special little cars?

Just been for a blast to Porsche Silverstone to pick up a couple of arb bushes.

Had my 3 yr old daughter with me who loves the Boxster, roof up on the way there as a little chilly for her but she wanted the roof down for the trip home.  She loved that for the first 10 minutes then promptly fell asleep until we got home.

Both my son and daughter both fell asleep whenever I took them out on a back seat on a pushbike, I bought a bike trailer and that worked too.....now they are 12 and 14 neither seem to sleep in the boxster roof up or down.....though the 12 year old daughter is rarely visible from the outside - so now I pick her up from school roof down and music up!

Nice ! I’d never thought to do the handbrake cover. I’ll take a look at doing that on mine too !

    Thanks both,

The results looks great, I missed the original post, what was the leather refurb product?  < mine has some jean rivet scratches as well as the handbrake cover to do.

Electrical contact cleaner and a microfibre cloth, took about 10 minutes.

Fab - been looking at mine and thinking it's about time they were tackled.

Had a slow drive to the hospital with the good lady, a slow and reserved trip back, hood up and air con on.  Dropped the good lady home, put the top down and thrashed around some lanes for 45 minutes.

  15. I agree with the roof up, windows up approach.

On the dehumidifier bag, I have a little box type filled with gel that you plug in they get wet, the gel changes colour to let you know it is saturated.  Similar idea to the ones you put in the microwave - those don't work for me as I don't have a microwave, all things said the plug in to dry out works pretty well.

IF anyone is worried about missing a London charge be it ULEZ or CC, you can set up automated payment for both. I think this link will get you to the TfL web site page which allows the creation for the required account: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/congestion-charge

There is the same for the Dartford crossing too - http://www.gov.uk/dart-charge

I wish I had set-up a ULEZ account, from my initial post I was caught out on a Sunday, not knowing it was 24/7, was on my way to the Albert Hall so could of easily missed it if I knew.  I am privately happy that I will not get caught out in the Boxster, still a little surprised and moreover looking at the posts am a little annoyed that the motorist foots the bill of the big polluters.

No new gas boilers from 2025 is a positive step, that will lead to the Heath Robinson approach of boiler maintenance and may well make the situation worse for a generation or two.  This leads me to a couple of other non car questions -

    1. When will gas users become the new smokers?

    2. What are the affordable alternatives? Is solar really efficient enough and are the big batteries not worse for the planet, is wind viable, same on batteries? and an electrical fall-back will surely overload the national grid and make us electrical fish in an energy bucket.

When I say that is not car related - it is - electric cars still have many ecological issues due to the batteries.  Why is the hydrogen cell not the power of choice?

KWR73. whereabouts in East London are you based?

I live in deepest darkest Kent, but commute in to ghost town that is Canary Wharf, well I did pre-pandemic.

Have driven for years, easy as long as you hit Blackwall before peak.
