  1. As per earlier response.

On my last 987 did a fix on the undertray.

Took it off repaired it from the inside using 2 part epoxy that was also spread onto some gorilla tape and then stuck over the crack/break.

Could hardly see the repairs as all on the inside.

  2. As others have said they will not get better. If not leaking then waxoyl, AC50 or Dinitrol (my favourite) copiously applied will keep further corrosion at bay. For how long depends how much salty road driving you do.

Had 997 before and lower ones went - local garage I trust checked and the top ones were in much better condition. lower offside was weeping - replaced nearside as well as looked iffy - £180 labour £80 parts. Then all got a full treatment of Dinitrol whilst on the ramps with wheels off. Sold car two years later all checked out ok. Told buyer which bits were replaced.

It is normally the lower pipes that go first.

  3. Hi

As has been said these cars are getting older and many things can wear on any car. Whatever you buy have it checked properly before purchase as it will not only be piece of mind it could save you buying a pup.

One thing to note is the car tax element you mentioned wanting a 3.4L - 987.1 cars cost 600 a year 987.2 cars cost 340 - due to better emissions, if keeping it for a while that adds up probably the difference will pay the insurance as well?

987.2 3.4L have different engine (DFI) and do not have an IMS and do not have bore-score concerns. However, a proper check on a 987.1 3.4 will check the cylinders for any problems. Bear in mind only a small minority of cars get bore-score but best to check as repairs are expensive. Seemed (maybe) to affect Caymans more than Boxsters I have no idea why that would be? There were quite a few other changes from .1 to .2 but I won't go into those.

Suspension will need checking - not just shocks but drop links, coffin arms, wishbones. Shocks will be more expensive if they are the adjustable PASM type.

As said, coolant leaks at 10 years + especially the front crossover section at the joints. Also have a check on air-con and front air-con rads. 1K to replace both but about £200 to do it yourself - I did and I am no mechanic. If all is good have grills put behind the front vents, these cars are like vacuum cleaners and suck up road cr*p which stays wet and rots out rads.

Check roof works ok, no stutters or groans on open close. Check if any signs of internal leaks. Control box and AMP under the seats do not like getting wet!!

A decent PPI should look for all the above but you may need to ask for cylinder check.

Have a wish list and rank what you must have as opposed to what you would like to have.

Examples - Sports seats, PASM, Sport mode button, dynamic headlights, sports exhaust, full leather interior, colour - the list goes on.

As Boxsters and Caymans were obviously cheaper than 911 cars and quite a few are a bit vanilla cars around, sparse on the extras as they can seriously bump up the price of any purchase.

Also drive a couple manual and auto PDK and the earlier .1 auto. I had a PDK 911 thought I would love it but it was just not for me. I now have 987.2 3.4 (with all the toys) - after sort spell with a vanilla 2.9 with no extras.

Consider what has been said buy on history what has been changed and sorted not on mileage alone.

Take your time, if you can, Plenty of 987.1 3.4 cars, but  lot less 987.2 3.4 cars - they were 2009 to 2011 and way less sold especially manual cars.

Prices of .2 /gen2 911 cars went mad this year for a combination of reasons, maybe the same will happen to the 987.2 market? They are a bit more to buy than .1 cars as expected. crystal ball anyone?

    Happy hunting.

  4. Hi

    Had a 2009 987.2 2.9 on 18" wheels non PASM and recently changed to 2010 987.2 3.4 on 19" wheels with PASM.

Accept first car a .2 not .1 Personally I found the non PASM 987.2 2.9 a rather harsh ride on its single setting. It was pretty low mileage car and everything felt taught but not very forgiving on our wonderful British Roads!!! I read that there were minor changes from .1 to .2  suspension but guess they were minor tweaks.

The car I had before the 2.9 was a 911 and had PASM, I did not think would miss it or be an issue but for me it was.

I think that cars with PASM - my opinion only and from the ones I have driven, are set a bit more forgiving on normal than those without.

With PASM on the .2 is firmer than the the standard single setting car.

There were a number of reasons that I changed the 987.2 2.9 but PASM was on the list.

  5. PASM shocks are expensive but as already said if they are ok - no leaks, knocks, noise when driving then they are still doing there job.

Maybe the indie was touting a little?

Been there myself t-shirt etc list of stuff not really needed.

  6. for some reason really limited on image size?

Wanted buttons and a unit that 'blended in' with the original. background buttons set to white can be any colour.

IGO sat nav only used twice but did the job.

    Will post another later.

  7. Hi

The screen is 6.2 inches. Will take and post installed pic today.

For sure the brand Erisin in not well known in the UK. You can buy direct from Europe or within the UK and get usual warranty.

    I bought from these people.

  8. Hi

Just spent time on an 'infotainment' swap out I had a CDR30 unit. Looked around for a while and wanted something that blended in with the original car. I remember reading on this forum about keeping the knobs rather than full screen touch.

I took that on board two reasons my car does not have additional controls for volume etc and it was more 'in keeping' with the looks of the car as the other contributor said.

Incartec are not cheap but have all the right adaptors that you may need.

I made a bit of a gaff in that I did not realise my car although non BOSE did have the ASK amp speaker pack option.

You MUST check whether you have a car amp or not because most in car stereos have a built in amp and you end up with a double amplified signal and that causes issues!

I went with an Erisin unit as it was recommended, the price was very good, it was as highly specced as the more name brand options liked the knob either side look. It was the new model with 8 core processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB memory, screen bright and clear with good viewing angles and fast operation no lag. You may want to check that as some look better viewed from the left for non UK right had drive markets - narrow viewing angle.

You can get pioneer alpine etc with good size screens that might look more in keeping to the car. Also you need to make sure you accurately measure the unit and buy the correct fascia - they are not all the same.

Horses for courses I suppose - enjoy.

Can upload a fitted pic if you want to see one fitted - the screen is a  just over 6 inches.

    Glen

  9. Thanks for the assist.

Feeling smug as sorted it out.

Basically problem was the  signal (CD or radio) went through the Erisin built in amp then the car Quadlock speaker wires went to the in car amp under the seat = double amplified.

Wanted to keep the car amp and bypass the cheaper I guess car stereo amp.

I had an idea the the RCA output connectors would not be amplified by the Erisin built in amp as they are designed to go to a remote amp?

Theory proved correct I bought two male RCA connectors that adapt to + - speaker wires. Had some spare grey and white speaker wires from a defunkt connector block.

I disconnected the ISO block that carries all the speaker wires and connected the RCA adapted wires using the salvaged narrow spade connectors.

It worked, normal output, Erisin amp bypassed, ASK Amp working no background white noise.

    Happy days

  10. Incartec adaptor worked in a fashion.

Problem being I have a double amplified signal. Car stereo has a built in amp then the connection block speaker wires go to the cars amp under the seat.

Means I have noise coming through he speakers when nothing playing and the volume control has to be really low otherwise way too loud.

Not sure if it is possible to reduce the in stereo amp output and use the car amp only?

  11. Hi All,

Hoping for some assistance suggestions or clarification.

2010 987.2 Boxster with the pretty pants CDR30. My car does have the option

490 Sound system A.S.K. got confused as the unit behind the tyre inflator stuff was for the lights and other stuff not the AMP.
Now I know the AMP is located under the passenger seat following another internet search.

Bought a very nice Erisin double din unit to replace the CDR30 unit. The Erisin has a standard ISO connector out to a female connector which takes the two multi plugs - speaker wires in one and all other gubbins power etc in the other.

    Erisin ES8136U 6.2" PX5 64GB 2 Din Android 10.0 Car Radio CarPlay & Auto GPS 4G DAB+ DSP DVD Player

Contacted three installers here in Devon but nobody interested in fitting it for me for various reasons.

An internet search showed me how to extract the old unit - rather adept at it now as I have done it a couple of times.

First CANBUS connector adaptor I bought but not knowing I had the AMP/speaker package was the wrong one.
All worked, powered up etc but no sound at all.

Another internet search showed me an option which was to connect the blue wire from the unit marked Antenna/AMP to the red/white wire on the canbus green connector block.
This worked, I got sound but poor - speaker noise when nothing playing and way too loud only needs to be on 4 out of 30 volume.

Never intended it to be permanent just wanted to test it and hear it working.

I have come across  a website called InCarTec who have hundreds of adaptors for all cars.

My search took me to this one.

Porsche Quadlock CANbus steering control interface and radio adapter cable - InCarTec

    Item -  49-POR-03

Including delivery it is £100 which is a lot but if it works thats ok. It sounds like the right one reading the material.

Anyone bought this, or used it or had success??

    Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Glen

  12. Bought the E Bay kit for my 997.2 now on 987.2.

The 15mm & 7mm set are the same and fit many Porsche models.

I sold the 997.2 as stock so they were in the shed.

Saw some pics posted on here and decided to put them on yesterday. Nothing else to do a peeing down again.

Wheels are silver but bolt set was black as they were ordered for my last car. Think they look alright though. The Car is the 2.9 so the calipers are dark colour as well.

500% improvement on the handling (joke) purely aesthetic but I think the next model very slightly widened the axle width? Could be wrong.

    Now what to do next??

  13. I have done this on a couple of Porsche cars

You will need some masking tape and some stiff cardboard.

Lay the masking tape (leaves no marks) across the rear where you want the bottom of the letters. Straight or slightly curved your personal preference.

Measure to the centre of the tape. That will be where the letter S goes - handy Porsche having 7 letters!

Make a carboard cross as in the pic - that ensures the correct spacing between the letters.

Work outwards placing each letter into the the template lining the horizontal with the top edge of the masking tape to ensure letters are straight.

If you place them really gently you can move them.

Remove tape and sorted. Mine is actually placed straight as to my duff eyes it looked better from lower angles.

Be cautious there are plastic chrome letters and metal chrome letters . There are fakes on the market - Ebay and they will get through one winter before showing tarnish.

  14. I bought one for the 987.2 off of Ebay for a price worth giving it a try.

Anyone considering it should watch the video on it by the company.

    user test several runs

It is very customisable - 2 X 9 settings. Does it make a difference - yes I believe it does. I opens the throttle body quicker setting dependant.

It reminds me of the sport mode on my last 911.

It is fun, it has a small controller that can be double taped to the dash. Easy to switch on change or switch off and drive normally around town.

It is not the same as flooring the accelerator pedal at all. Despite what people will try to say. The opening rate of the throttle is electronically controlled and pressing harder does not change that at all.

Also the car is set up for 'general road use' so that means for everybody and as such needs to be ok for driving miss daisy if the need arises.

  15. Hi

The face of the wheels on my 996 997 and 987 was the standard Silver the one you can buy - Wurth Silver and Lacquer paint spray cans.

Where wheels are original colours they are a different colour on the inside face a kind of pale greeny yellow plain colour - Being a man I cannot describe colour coz I only see primary colours or so says my wife haha.

I would like to repaint them and if possible keep original colours rather than do them all the same.

  16. New to me 987.2 2.9L manual 6speed Metallic Meteor Grey Black interior 32K miles.

I have fortunately had a few Porsches over the years with a gap when my kids were small.

Sold my 911 997.2 3.8S PDK. Not that I did not like it it was superb but had it 5 years and wanted a change and prices were very strong so took advantage of that.

Never had a mid engine Porsche and I wanted a manual and chose the 2.9L 987 because I wanted to enjoy the revs, gear changes, engine and exhaust sound.

Anyhow I enjoy 'fettling' and a bit on amateur detailing too.

Had the car a few days and time to give it the once over -

Clay barred it, mild compound to paintwork then machine polished, then 2 part glaze to wings and bonnet. Leather seats cleaned then treated with a nice 'leather smell' product. Vacuumed the leaves out of the vents. Wheels off, wheel arch panels off crud all cleaned out then Dinatrol Metallic used behind panels. Suspension components cleaned (they were not bad really). Everything checked cleaned and treated as necessary, Dinatrol on top mounts. Wheels fully cleaned while off weight adhesive removed, painted couple of parts - Wurth paint and lacquer. Designtek twin carbon X exhaust end pipe fitted (I just don't like square pipes personally).

Now if it stops peeing it down I would like to go for a drive.

On a note - even though my car is low mileage I noted the following -  if you take your front wheels off check the tops of your suspension struts shock absorbers. Pull the rebound rubber stop down, it may be a bit stuck. These cars like my 911 tend to retain damp between the bump stop and the shock absorber piston at the tops. You can potentially save a lot of money by cleaning and treating that part before they corrode and need replacing. You might as well give your top mounts a spray as well while you are there.

    Regards to all
