  1. I can confirm it's roof off to replace the trays.  A few bolts and release 2 ball joints and off it lifts. Good tip is to pop a bit of cardboard under where the roof bolts on when replacing the roof to avoid damage to your freshly replaced trays.

Make one small cut at the top of the large round hole so you don't have to remove the gearboxes and all the faff that entails with re-synching etc. The trays can be tucked under the plastic guards that way and water cannot rise that high.

I got second hand trays from eBay for 30 quid each; Douglas Valley often have them if you ask them.

Good luck with it, it's not too bad a job 👍

  2. When I removed the roof on my 2001 car to replace the drain trays the wire and sensor were on the B pillar passenger side (UK).

The wire ran down under the trim/carpet but I didn't see the plug to be fair as I didn't need to disconnect it.

It was the original roof with the plastic window.

  3. I had the same dilemma as our daughter was born 18 weeks ago and I would like the option of being able to take her safely in the 986 should the need arise.

Ultimately I sourced the bar from eBay for £40 and the local indy wants £54 to code it so just need to modify a vag buckle and I will fit it. So about £100 all in.

I decided it's not worth taking the chance on 3rd party electronics that may or may not work if the worst happens for something so precious.

  4. Lovely looking car fella and great spec. 👍

HP are literally a few minutes walk from me and I've noticed they have been selling some good stuff recently.

    Enjoy!🏆

  5. My 2004 had a quite expensive Dansk 'sausage box' fitted by the previous owner.

It had a muted quality at low rpm and a great noise above 4000. However it droned like a bar steward between 2500 - 3000 rpm and was one of the reasons I shifted the car as it was really that bad. Enough to resonate your fillings out... It also had 90 degree bends about 50mm in from the tips so db killers couldn't be fitted in a way I was happy with.

Current one has original and will be replaced with the same if and when it goes. It's lasted 22 years so a grand or so isn't too bad in the scheme of things. Car is a daily so needs to be understated.

  6. My first two didn't have it, current one does. I rarely use it to be honest.

I do find the manual controls on the non aircon more intuitive but that might just be me.

If the condition was right it wouldn't stop me buying.

  7. Enjoying all the stories.

Mine relatively simple - nuts on cars and bikes since I was small and have owned over 100 now with a preference for Mercedes quality having done the fast Ford/Vauxhall GTE thing in my late teens early 20s.

A bike accident a few years back sent me down the 4 wheel toy route and whilst Porsche had always been a dream marque for me I always thought 'out of my reach.'

By happenstance I picked up a cheap 2001 2.7 986 which I didn't appreciate at the time was a good spec. and good history. The awe of actually owning a Porsche plus IMS paranoia meant I polished it more than drove it and let it go after 2 1/2 years.

A succession of other sports cars followed, Lotus, TVR, Jag XK V8 but knew deep down the Boxster sale was a mistake so bought a leggy poverty spec 2004 2.7 from a trusted dealer with the intention of using it, which I did. A lot.

A work colleague kept badgering me to sell it to him so I did so and bought a great spec lower mileage 2000 2.7 from a trusted specialist on here. This one is a keeper and with the good fortune to be able to go part time in 2023 it may become my only car as the Mrs has the family car which we use when we all go out.

Thanks for all the interesting stories on here and best wishes for 2023 to you all!

    Andy
