I've been very impressed with GY Asym 6.

Yeah.  I hear good things about them.  Unfortunately, it's not available in my sizes, and I want to keep it OEM, size wise.

  2. ***MODS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO MOVE IF IN WRONG PLACE***

    Greetings All,

    I'm currently running Michelin Pilot Sport 2 N rated on my 17" wheeled 987 2.7 Boxster, standard OEM sizes (205/55 17 and 235/50 17).

I don't care in the least whether I have N rated tyres, or not.  I've just got them because, literally, the ONLY premium sports tyres still available in my sizes are the N rated ones - Michelin PS2, Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric version 1, and until recently there used to be a Continental Sportcontact 3, but I can't find any of them now.  (There's also a Pirelli sports winter tyre, but I'm looking for summer tyres).

I can't say I've loved the PS2s.  I admit I'm biased - I've never got on with the feel of (any) Michelin tyres.  I was always a continental man, on my E36 328i, 130i and Clio 182.  I just had no choice last time and had to buy what was available.

My question to the learned collective is, has anyone tried both Michelin PS2 and Goodyear Assymetric version 1, and if so, what was the difference in feel?

    Thanks

What did you end up doing?

Sorry for the late reply.  Got new front shocks fitted, along with new top mounts, drop links and bearings

  4. Hi,

Quick question.  I've been away working for 12 days, got back and the remote on my key fob won't unlock the car (987.1 2.7 manual).  ISTR they go into some sort of rest mode if not used for a while?  If I just unlock the door manually with the key, will I have issues with the alarm?

    Thanks

  5. My old ride was an MR2 Roadster, and I got a hardtop for that.  Had to drive a long way, and owner had to help me swap over the fitting kit from his car to mine, which was borderline daunting for someone with no mechanical experience.  We got through it though.  But I loved my hardtop on the MR2, because the hood was a glorified tent.  It was actually really good fun changing it over twice a year, because the hood had such little sound insulation and was so drafty, that putting the hardtop on made it feel like a completely different car.  It was literally like changing cars twice a year, which was an enjoyable event all on its own.

But, with the 987, it's quite a different story.  The hood on the 987 is an improvement over the old 986 hood, which itself is obviously better than the MR2's hood.  It's thick, warm and doesn't let much sound through.  I remember in the 2, the sound difference was huge with/without the hardtop on.  You had to turn the radio up crazy loud above 50mph.

My car is a daily driver, and kept outside.  But I've dealt with that by buying an excellent half cover which covers the hood and glass area.

Would I like a hardtop for my 987?  Honestly, yes.  I miss the hardtop on my old MR2.  "Changing cars" twice a year was fun, and the car also looked really cool the the lid on; something I think is also true of Boxsters.

But, I haven't done it (yet), because:

    1. they're not cheap

    2. they're rare and hardly ever come up

    3. I hear through the grapevine (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that putting on the fitting kit is quite an involved job on a 987, unlike the 986 or MR2, and I'd probably need to give the job to a specialist, further increasing the cost

    4. my car's speed yellow, and I'd probably have a better chance of world peace than finding a yellow 987 lid, meaning I'd need to pay to get it resprayed, increasing the cost even more.

So, I live on umming and arghhing.  Maybe one day.....

  6. Bought my '06 2.7 manual six months ago and have done 5K, so 10K a year.  Would be higher, though, were it not for covid.  Car's a daily, a weekend toy and a tradesman's van 😜 Yes, really.  You should see the look on some of the other tradesmans' faces!  It may have small dimensions, but makes up for it with infinite headroom 😉

  7. I've got the same issue on my 59K '06.  I've bought various Bilt Hamber products which I'm gonna use; just waiting for the spring weather.  Wheel arch liners off is a good tip.  I've also got rust on all four of my jacking points.  Gonna do that too.

  8. Hi,

I'm not sure whether to put this here or elsewhere on the forum, so mods please feel free to move if in the wrong place.

I've just got a 987 2.7 Boxster as a daily runner, my first Porsche, and it's on 17" wheels which is my preference.  I'm going to have to start looking around for tyres, as the fronts are 2012 vintage.  I've narrowed it down to either Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 1 or Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (oem 205/55 17 and 235/50 17 sizes), both N rated as there doesn't seem to be any other premium sports summer tyre available in these sizes.

My question is, from your experience, which would you say has the softer sidewall and therefore more comfortable ride comfort?

And, one more question, do you all run exactly the recommended pressures, or no?  I notice the table in the door jam recommends one psi higher than the quick start guide.

    Thanks
