….stuck some sound deadening stuff under the boot lid to cut the resonance of the DesignTek exhaust (which booms terribly).  Has had a positive effect, much less  intrusive.  Boot acts like a huge Bass Cab,  not now….

Nice, I've got some sheets spare as i'm mid way through upgrading speakers as well as the same exhaust - will try later on today!  Do you have the valved or unvalved version?

  2. As others have said, whilst the headunit itself won't get full Android OS updates forever, it supports both Carplay and Android Auto as well as android screen mirroring (I have an iPhone so haven't tested this) so if the headunit runs that 'app' today there's no reason it shouldn't in x years time.  Apple / Google have to keep the protocol the same as otherwise they'd break regular headunits like the Pioneer.

I've bought quite a few widgets, smart home bits and tech from Aliexpress and am yet to be burnt, this was probably the most expensive thing I've bought from there though.  I take a fairly relaxed view on it, similar to @BBB - if I get 3 or 4 years out of it for £280 then I'm more than happy, you're getting a massive amount of features / functions for that money.  The official Porsche retrofit headunit is over £1k from memory and (I read) runs an older version of Android...!

@nelmo regarding fitting; no - as long as you buy the version with the correct harness it should be plug and play, the only thing that is a bit more fiddly is if you want to add a reversing camera.

@chris80chris yes, if you don't want to use an onboard 4G connection you can either just use Carplay, or tether it to your mobile, they do 987.2 versions - its the same unit just with a black fascia instead of grey.

Hi Hainsey, could you post a link to where you bought the Aliexpress device please…looks great!

    https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005005086544248.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.235.10c2180247AMzT&gatewayAdapt=glo2vnm

There's lots of different flavours and kits, essentially you want one that includes the harness for the system you have Bose / Non-Bose and then whether you want reversing camera, 4G SIM adapter etc.  There's also different specs of the headunit itself - mainly the CPU, amount of RAM and storage it has (you can basically think of it as an Android tablet in a headunit form factor).  I paid about £280 for mine which was a higher spec version with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.  It's fast and snappy and means I can run native Google Maps, Waze, Spotify etc (as well as Youtube, Netflix etc if you wanted) as well as using CarPlay.  If you just want it to be gateway to CarPlay then you can probably get away with a lower spec unit.  Mine has an FM radio but not DAB but I don't care about this as never use either. Once it's installed you can leave the default loaders 'as is' (which looks better than the Pioneer OS anyway) or skin it or use different launchers to make it look slicker and more OEM.

I have a cheapo Lycamobile SIM in there for 4G coverage which I pay less than five quid a month for but this is entirely optional.

  4. Just trying to decide whether to go with JW or Royal - they're both similar price.  Am going to go whole hog and do wheel, gearknob, gaiter and the door grab handles.

How hard is it to get the handbrake assembly off?

  5. I swapped out the Pioneer unit the car came with and replaced it with one of the Aliexpress Android units with full Carplay.  I've been very impressed with it - the screen is miles better than the Pioneer unit and it looks more OEM, the physical buttons and control knobs are much more usable as well.

Perfect, just ordered a box of them from here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Waterproof-Electrical-Connector-Automotive-Motorcycle/dp/B07YZ5C2P5/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3BXL8FTMHG9P9&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.RehfIQsxh7mrTeEBwm99hs48gI3WKyePJD3ZWXHt14NzNz3EAWVu9SRBk0X4Uac1w5vuTTQvDt3tV09ldUx50I7woVUln_WIPB3QGtxb1XdY5XCpjfjiDuOZgNBVVCuhOJzYfTGnAhPDYOUdWJuwILWTDyZ8bxqb9Vl-RwFyQNCJmKsdnDp3guTNDYfTDiCI9rXrAc9vH9M-kFjItMFKRa2BzL-LEUtg4ner9YDx4r4.yT_wM7UC_1bY52O9PEwOq6OJlsmMPO-Zj9kUDEZ_IBc&dib_tag=se&keywords=superseal+electrical+wiring+connector&qid=1714406486&sprefix=superseal+electrical+wiring+connector%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-4

Have just installed the same grill set in the parcel shelf you used with a pair of Hertz 3.5in two way speakers. Now just need to figure out best way to run the cable back to the headunit, think I'll go along the drivers side by the frunk / trunk switches and up into the dash and across.  Bought an ISO harness kit off of amazon so I can add the rears into the quadlock harness behind the headunit.

Think i'll hold off on the sub until I try the new speaker setup, if I need one am hoping I can find one slim enough to fit under the drivers seat.  Assume the Focal ones you're using are passive?

I have just done this. I had to run wires back to the crossover that I put in the door. It's a Pita to do believe me!!!

Did you replace the speaker wire all the way back to the head unit?  Would def prefer to try and avoid that if possible. I've ordered a set of Focal components with 6.5in door speaker and separate tweeter coming later today. I haven't looked yet but was hoping I could find where the front channel is split (i read it's under the dash somewhere) and then locate the crossover unit there which would mean i could keep the existing wiring.

I managed to prise the original tweeter out but the wire just disappears down into the dash. There's a guy that does plug and play drop in replacement sets with custom mounts etc and it looks like he uses a capacitor / resistor in-line on the tweeter instead of a crossover unit, but as I don't know the spec then it would just be guesswork on my part.

I've also ordered a rear shelf conversion kit and a set of 3.5in rear speakers to add later on as well (i need to remove the centre console to repaint it so thought i'd run cable at same time.

Am unsure whether i'll add an active sub yet, the headunit has an output for it, was looking at the Pioneer one for £130ish.

I meant reattaching the hinge panel to the door card. I watched a yt vid and the guy had to break the clips to get the 2 bits apart. Can't remember how he put them back together.

You mean the bit I sprayed?  It's still attached! The rest of the doorcard is just masked off in the photo.  But yes, it looks like it has plastic welded tabs that fix it in place so left it well alone.

I need to do this. How do you reattach it to the door panel? I was under the impression that you have to destroy the little clips to separate it in the first place. Other thing I'm not motivated by a broken switch luckily.

Haven’t tried putting them back on yet, think they came off ok, just need resetting but bought some spare anyway just in case: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/296182393845?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=aiUWzZxKTF2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=WAJs85DbQs2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

  10. Took off the door panel to replace the faulty window switch, then stripped off the scratched up rubberised coating on the top trim and sprayed it up.  It's early days to see how well it will last but if it goes well then i'll tackle the centre column next.

  11. So partially answering my own question, found a wiring diagram for the base system, it looks like the tweeters are just tapped off the main door speakers, so I guess that they must have a resistor to act as a passive inline filter.  In which case I assume I could just buy a component kit and re-use the existing wiring without using the supplied crossover?

  12. I've got a 987.1 which originally had the base stereo in it (currently working with an Android head unit instead).  It has no amp, a single door speaker, dash tweeter, and maybe a center speaker (not sure about this as I don't see how it would be wired / driven?).  I'm planning on replacing the main door speakers with 6.5 woofers which include a high pass filter and separate tweeters.  In order to avoid having to run new wiring into the stock tweeter location on the dash I assume there's a high pass filter somewhere to separate the output from the headunit to the two speakers.  Anyone got any experience with this?  Is it easy to find / replace, or am I better off just replacing the tweeters with the existing wiring, or leaving them 'as is' and just doing the door speakers?

Was nominally considering installing something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/JBL-STAGE2604C-2-Way-Component-System/dp/B07QH6BXPY/ref=asc_df_B07QH6BXPY/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=535099071252&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17157381583090392036&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046203&hvtargid=pla-1088388132121&psc=1&mcid=de7b4aa9263036caa16ec2096aea9500

Depending on where you are in Beds I totally recommend Orbit tyres in Wellingborough for alignment. The guy that runs it has owned 2 Boxsters and a Cayman and did a perfect job on mine - even adding in all the camber on the front like the likes of centre gravity do but at 4 times the price. Proper alignment will make the difference between 👌 and a car that handles like a plate of jelly on a stick. If you want I'll meet you there with my 'perfect' result print out and we'll get them to duplicate it.

Top tip, will make a note - thanks!

  14. Exhaust turned up yesterday, seems quite well made and fitted easily without having to mess about with it.  Took it for a quick drive - first impressions seems ok, louder than the previous modified one but not too obnoxious (from in the car at least).  Tried it with roof up and down - not sure about drone yet, maybe at around 2k rpm but might just be because I was listening for it to find fault with it.  Will see how I get on after a few weeks and report back.

  15. Eugh, sounds like more of a ballache than I was initially anticipating - I've been lulled into a false sense of security from watching americanyoutube instruction videos,  effortlessly spannering cars in their clean dry climates, in the comfort of their irritatingly spacious garages 😉

At 105k it wouldn't hurt to refresh the springs. Pay for alignment once!

Have you looked at Spyder Performance components? They are mentioned a few times on here. Usually for 986, not sure about 987.1.

Yeah I've skimmed their site but wanted to lock down the parts list before I started properly price hunting down the best prices.

Don't think I've ever paid for alignment before - is it the sort of thing it's fine to go to a 'high street' type outfit for?

  17. My indy told me at last year's service that the front suspension needed sorting - shocks & top mounts were on last legs, bump stops have disintegrated.  We put it on the to do list for this year, but as I've just had to spring for a new exhaust (see post elsewhere) I thought I'd see if I can save a few quid and do the job myself.  Car is a 987.1 Boxster without PASM with 105k on clock and (I assume) the original suspension.

I've put together the following parts list assuming that these are the 'consumable' parts and that I'll re-use the existing washers, bolts etc. I've added springs but not sure if I need them unless existing ones are broken - would rather do it once and replace them if needed.

    - I've found the B4 shocks on backorder at demontweaks for £300 for a pair so cheaper than design911 below.

    - The top mount kit is Meyle

    - Bump stop kit is OE Match Classic.

    - Springs are Suplex.

    - I'll pick up a spring tension tool as well.

Does this list look about right? Have I missed anything? Comments / feedback / tips welcome!

  18. Decided to bite the bullet and have ordered a new non-valved system directly from Topgear for £700.  Got quoted ~£200 for welding and looks like I can sell the OEM sport tips for a few quid to offset against it so it seemed like it was worth the extra. Hopefully will be here by the weekend.

Hopefully drone won't be an issue - from reading round it seems to affect PDK cars more than manuals. Will report back once fitted!

Had a punt on this guy on Ebay, JW Auto Trim, eBay item number : 275028419106. £150 for gearknob + gaiter, and both handbrake sections. Very happy with the result.

That looks very nice - did you paint the centre console yourself, that's come up really nice as well.
