Not a fan of the side ones, look a bit ‘Halfords’ and not sure they’re protecting anything apart from Zunsports profits. Mind you, that’s a Cayman so the owner’s taste is already suspect.

Same here, the ones on the side intakes don't look right IMO.  My car had the zunsports at the front on when I purchased which on a black car probably stand out less.  Has anyone had issues with debris in side intakes?  Not heard of anything on here about that.

  2. Some interesting stories here, and also interesting to see what you drive side by side to your Porsches.

As a 17 year old passing my driving test I was a named driver on my parents’ Mk2 Golf 1.6 and it wasn’t until I was in 3rd year of uni that it was mine, when I convinced my mum to buy a Mk4 Golf GTI turbo from new.  Long before this however I had the classic Porsche/Lambo/Ferrari posters on the wall and memorised every stat from Top Trumps, although in reality I loved a Mk2 Golf GTI.

When the Mk2 was showing its age I inherited my dad’s Mk2 Polo GT (that one with the 1.3 injection engine) while I was studying my post grad.  When I came to working and saving for my own car I bought a Mk1 MX-5 1.8iS which I adored – for its gear change and RWD balance.  For London commuting I bought a Mk1 Focus 1.8 LPG which helped me skirt the newly introduced congestion charge.  As a FWD car it was miles ahead of the VWs I had experienced, however I was hooked by a soft top roadster and bought a Z4M roadster as a weekend/roadtrip toy.  The jump in power was insane (and the S54 straight six a masterpiece) and 2 of my friends went out and bought the same car after sampling mine.  One of them came out of a 996 and having driven it briefly I knew Porsche handling was on another level to anything else.  A 5 year stint abroad meant I had to sell my cars and on return I opted for an M135i – a peach of an engine but I never gelled with the handling.  At the same time I bought a classic E30 325i cabriolet for weekend open top fun having seen a great example for sale.  Moving house and losing a garage meant the E30 had to go, and doing a renovation required a workhorse so the M135i went too, replaced with a Mk3 Focus estate (boo).

That’s when I knew I had to get that special car once the house was done, and the search was on for a roadster (despite a new born just arriving too) – I was considering the R8 spyder manual, Elise 220 or 981S.  It was pretty easy to choose in the end as the Mrs said she would only drive the 981 (Elise too harsh and R8 too flashy) – whaddaya know the better half nailed it.  The one I ended up buying from Ashgood was spot on apart from a slightly poor rear bumper respray which I had knocked off some £ in the deal.  The manual shift is a gem and the PSE is the nuts, but it is the overall package and handling that is just so damn impressive.  Cue Jim Young in Boiler Room – look at the f***ing smile on my face, ear to ear baby!  Incidentally, a mate sampled my car and went out and bought a 981S himself.

Haven’t really hankered for anything else yet, but if I did it needs to be NA, open top and manual.  Probably a Carrera GT then.

  3. I know you mentioned you didn't prefer a vent mount but I, like yourself, had tried the magnetic route but my iphone 12 falls off most of the time.  I use 2x magnetic vent mounts in my daily and it does the job (YOSH) but the small 981 vents don't cater for this option.

In the end I got one of these which has actually been very reliable and looks semi discrete (mega cheap too):

Really depends, the vacuum faults can be intermittent and most likely wouldn't be picked up.

50/50 whether they see issues with the exhaust on the inspection.

If you are interested I made a video on YouTube showing some of these issues, should come up if you search 981 PSE.

Cheers Daz, I’ve passed this onto him.  Fun fact I realised I’ve seen this video prior to my purchase.. a great resource thanks!

I had my September 2013 registered 981S PSE replaced under warranty a couple of years later and there was a definite change in sound from old PSE to new PSE

I am sure the exhaust itself must have differences as it became much louder and raucous

FWIW it was the back 2/3rds of mine that was replaced both sides, I believe

What happened to the original exhaust to require a replacement?  If you're coming to the South Bucks meet next Tues I'll see you there.

Sometimes the valves are seized, sometimes the changeover valves in the vacuum system are playing up, the loudest ones are probably blowing a little the bolts holding them together are made of chocolate.

The technician checked for seized valves (no issue here) but not anything else.  But the other points you raise I've not considered before, very interesting!  Seeing as I had a PPI when purchasing around a year ago (and the OPC exhaust-off was around 3 months after purchase date), would this not be picked up at that point?

  7. Totally agree.. the (PSE) sound is what really delights in my 981S!

PSE for me is perfect, you press it when you don't need to be quiet and instantly you have the fuller sound and pops that make you giggle!  My cousin bought a 981S on the back of driving mine - beware though not all 981s are built equal it seems... my 2014 981S with PSE vs his 2012 981S with PSE, and his is around half the volume driven similarly.  Both cars stock.  We even took the cars to an OPC and the technician couldn't figure it out, only saying there might have been changes to the baffles between those build dates.

Thanks. Maser completely different really, a much bigger and heavier car so you have to remember you are not driving the boxster! It does disguise its weight surprisingly well and feels a real event to drive, even at slow speeds. The noise is pretty outrageous. If i do sell the boxster I will need to find a replacement convertible in due course.

Out of interest did you drive the R8, if so thoughts? I like them but boot space on the spyder looks terrible.

Will be reading with interest to see what the replacement convertible is!  I didn't drive the R8 myself, had a ride in a friend's and the ride was plush and the noise was right.  Was looking at the first gen (as I wanted a manual) and the interior really has aged well.  You're right about luggage space - one of the reasons I went with the boxster.

  9. That's certainly a rare spec you have, good luck when you eventually list it.  How does the Maser compare?  Must be good to lead you to sell the Boxster!

I've only just seen the start of this thread and I was looking at similar cars before deciding on the 981S - the R8 spider manual and S3 Elise 220 were on my shortlist.

MIne is 987, but I do get rear screen condensation that can be difficult to shift. The only solution I've found is to really dry it off every time it appears and this will reduce it considerably. I think it's due to the moisture getting trapped in that area due to poor air flow. I also take the wind deflector off in winter and store it behind the passenger seat as it's very easy to clip back on if you get the roof down.

Thanks BBB - think I will also order some moisture absorbing packs and place them around the cabin.  I've had a couple of other convertibles in the past and don't remember this being an issue though.

  11. Out of interest does anyone get condensation on their rear screen?  My 981 is under a full car cover and I normally find the windscreen condensation free but the rear mists up.  Drain holes look fine and no wet carpets.  And also with the wind deflector in place it's difficult to get to the rear screen when the hood is up!  Cheers
